Canon beach is the most dog friendly town I've been to. Everywhere dogs are allowed! Bruce's candy shop is the exception. I was picking out taffy with my dog by my side minding our own business and were told we couldn't be in there. More specifically "only dogs you can carry, we are a food processing facility." Well last I checked where you make the taffy is walled off between the retail and processing. And undoubtedly if I had a dog in my arms "holding it" while collecting tardy, the fur, sand, dirt would drop right into your taffy bins. Allowing multiple small dogs but not my large dog doesn't make sense. The logic is off. read more

This place is fun, they have a selection of any candy you could think of! I got Smurf gummies, picked a mix of Jelly Belly beans, and got a cute sloth tin of strawberry flavored candy. We didn't see them making taffy, but they were making candied apples at the time we were there and it was nice to see how they did it in house. Awesome little spot! Tons of options for any person with a sweet tooth. They even had some creative chocolate novelties to purchase. Lots of gift options. I loved their coffee mug assortment but I'm not sure if they need all the merchandise they sell there. They had children's toys not related to candy for sale but also some adult-themed birthday cards at the back. One card even displayed a cartoon of a man with a large appendage. Kinda odd for a candy store but I could overlook that. I would rather have more space to walk than have every square inch filled with junk for sale. I am a kid. This will never change. End of story. So walking into this place, I was in awe. So many colors. Chewy and chocolatey things. It is Candyland in real life & I'm always a winner. I was sad the taffy machine wasn't running, but I was happy they offered samples. Sadly, I've had better taffy. The staff was not as fun or happy as I would've hoped for a place like this. It took a while to get their attention for the chocolate counter even though she was just standing there bored. She put all the truffles in a tiny wax bag and the candy cups were in disarray and all the flavors mixed and toppings broke. When I spend $20 on truffles I expect a box or at something to hold them so they aren't just a bag of chocolate balls. It was very awkward. Most of the truffles were good, but some of them weren't truffles at all. The peanut butter one had a confectioner's sugar and peanut butter filling rather than chocolate. I can probably make better ones. I blame cute touristy-ness for sucking me in. They do have a lot of other things besides truffles though. Gummies, salt water taffy, lollipops, and caramels. Love the variety of candy and novelty items at Bruce's. There's lunch boxes with Sesame Street characters, Star Wars mugs, T-shirts and just about every candy I've ever eaten during my childhood. One of my favorite type of candies of all time is salt water taffy and oh my, there were a lot of flavors! The fudge is fresh and soft and wonderful! Usually when you get fudge at a candy shop, it has been pre-cut and gets dry and you can tell that it has been sitting for days. Not this time. Sooo worth the calories! We also had a candy apple (which they cut for us!) and chocolate covered Oreos (which my partner thought were the best they had ever had). I was on a mission for sea foam. There is probably not a bigger (or more fantatical) sea foam fan on the West Coast than moi! Now, I did not start out knowing I was a sea foam fan. In fact, I didn't start out knowing what sea foam was. Technically, in high school, I started on Violet Crumbles. I worked at a store that sold the heavenly aussie Violet Crumble bar, and I quickly and quietly became addicted. Chocolate on the outside. Crumbly honeycomb toffee on the inside. Heaven. Several years passed and I found myself living in San Francisco, where I discovered that Violet Crumble had changed her name to honeycomb and was hiding out in gourmet candy stores. Trying to elude me apparently. No such luck! I found myself a steady supply, post haste. Flash forward to living in Seattle, where I managed to score some honeycomb, only to find out that in the PNW, this glorious stuff is called sea foam. Can I get a WHAT? Yes, that's right, my Violet Crumble disguised as honeycomb is now hanging out under the pseudonym of sea foam, and tasting just as addictive. Even better, you can buy the whole thing covered in dark chocolate, or milk chocolate, or (get this) at Bruce's you can buy just the crumbly honeycomb toffee center ON ITS OWN! Shudder. Wandering the picturesque streets of this little coastal town, one finds the invariable art galleries, cafes, souvenir shops...and olde-fashioned candy shoppes. (Yes, it's a tourist setup, but a familiar and a terribly appealing one.) The pink-and-chocolate-striped awning and the smell of caramel popcorn and roasting nuts drew us to Bruce's door. Inside, it was an entire carnival of brightly-colored sugar, with handmade chocolates of all description, fresh fudge, an extravagant collection of caramel apples (drizzled in various chocolates and even rolled in roasted cashews...!), bins of old-style candies, and the obligatory taffy pulling machines in the window. Their taffy-cutting and -wrapping machine was having a problem, requiring the undivided attention of a technician. We stopped to watch for a while, as the machine (amusingly) churned out unwrapped taffy and spat the wrappers in the technician's face, after which they fluttered all over the floor. They had chocolate-covered seafoam (like honeycomb -- light and crisp, tasting of honey and vanilla), which I haven't had in years. (I used to live in another seaside resort town.) Walking into this candy store gave me a 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' feeling for the first time in my life. Frankly, walking into this shop is overwhelming as I didn't know where to look and what to drool over first. The most amazing assortment of classic and throwback candies, house made caramel apples, taffies, and chocolates, plus a great selection of licorices and every other candy imaginable. The staff was very friendly and everything was fresh. I am a strict date-checker and everything was within its expiration date. I loved the view into the 'kitchen' and also the free sample of fresh salt water taffy and salted caramels. This is by far the best candy store I have ever stepped into and there was almost no tasty treat I could think of that they didn't have. Best of all, everything was relatively well priced! Any review telling you to skip this place and go to Schwietert's should be read with extreme caution and suspicion. Schwietert's is stale, flavorless and out of date, Bruce's is the opposite. Schwietert's is a dismal selection, Bruce's is the opposite. I don't mean to pit these two places together, but I've been to Schwietert's a few times ever since it replaced Buzz on Broadway in Seaside and each time I threw out about 75% of what I bought. Today was my first visit to Bruce's and I am absolutely blown away. Some candies are local, others are imported from places like Holland. The prices are what you'd expect for a tourist area, but still cheaper than you'll find in 'artisan' candy shops in Portland. Spent our honeymoon on the Oregon coast and were so excited to buy salt water taffy. The outside of the store looks inviting. I was excited to see that you could watch them make the taffy. But what I saw was totally gross. Non of the gentleman making the taffy were wearing gloves. One gentleman would pour some powder sugar(?) On the taffy and then whip his hands on his apron. Do NOT make the mistake I did. Was on my way out of town and found parking closest to Bruce's. Since I just needed some salt water taffy as a souvenir, I popped in here. I should have known by the limited selection that this was not the place for salt water taffy, but I thought, "how different can it be from the place down the road? Plus it says 'award-winning' so I'm sure it's fine." Not fine. Several taffies had a distinct chemical flavor, and the peppermint was so sticky that I could barely eat it.
