Never had a worse experience. Was told to wait an hour, so I did that. Checked back in after an hour and the owner (who had not moved an inch from earlier) yelled at me when I asked the mechanic for a time estimate. The owner said "he just works here im the owner!!!" My engine started smoking.... I was sitting at the Citgo gas station across the street. I called the nearest shop - Bruce's across the street. He had diagnosed the problem through the phone and within 1/2 hour.... I could not believe it... he had a NAPA auto part delivery with the new radiator hose assembly that had to be replaced. Do I want to engage in a deep, meaningful conversation with my auto mechanic? Not really. Do I want my vehicle fixed correctly and not get ripped-off? Most definitely! That's what you get from Bruce's. The mechanics are FAR from warm and fuzzy. The office space is FAR from "Home & Garden." I'm not going there for tea & crumpets...I want my car fixed...dammit! A little on the pricey side, it might take a little longer to get your car back, but here is one perfect example of "you get what you pay for!' I have been going to Bruce's Automotive for 11 years. It started when I had a Chevy Blazer that had serious electrical problems. I took it everywhere and spent a lot of money, it was never fixed. A friend suggested taking it to Bruce's. The problem was solved, repaired and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. A couple of years after that, the same pain in the ass Blazer wouldn't start (I just had shoulder surgery) Bruce came and towed the car to his shop, fixed it, returned it, and handed me the keys. Over the years we have had a MINIMUM of four cars in my household and each and everyone of them has had to make a visit to Bruce's and each and everytime they have been returned, completely repaired and I still have money in my pocket. read more

I'm not sure what the deal is. He seems to know a lot, but he's got a very bad attitude almost bitter toward his customers. On several occasions he's had a very bad attitude with my mother and grandmother (come on it's grandma!) I told them not to go back after that. The service is ... well ... spotty --- the actual work is really good, but the wait times to get a car fix are absurd cars sit on t he lot waiting to get fixed for days before they even get to them and when they do the attitude is like you are hassling them. Took my mother's car in because it didn't pass an emissions test and not only did they fix the issue for less than I was anticipating, they even took it too the emissions center to have it tested! My car kept getting stuck in park and I couldn't figure out why. The dealership replaced the entire gear assembly, thankfully the warranty covered the repairs, because it was around $850-$900, but I was still having the same issue. I got stuck close to Bruce's shop and went to him for a second opinion. He saw my battery was corroded and going bad, so I bought a new battery from Bruce; that was $120. I went back to the shop 20 minutes after getting the battery, because my car got stuck in park at the grocery store up the street. I was lucky it finally let me switch gears. Bruce asked me if my brake light turned on when I pressed on the brake. I told him, "I'm in the car when I try to put it in reverse, so I didn't know". So Bruce got in the car, pressed on the brake and sure enough my brake light wasn't working. It turned out to be a $50 brake switch that had gone out and my car didn't know my foot was on the brake, so it wouldn't allow me to change gears. I'm happy Bruce figured it out! read more

An honest mechanic for a good price. First time customer for Bruce. I took my 1994 Geo Prism to a couple other mechanics, asking how much would it cost to keep my car running another couple of years (okay, another 10 if Romney wins the Presidential election). One said do nothing and one said about $1,000. Bruce said I didn't really need anything, but the car could use a tune-up and a few minor repairs. According to another mechanic, my power steering fluid pump was dying, but he said the pump was fine. My car is making a grinding noise when I turn because of rusting bearings. I could just turn up the radio if I don't mind the noise. Otherwise, he can change the bearing for a lot cheaper than a new pump would cost. For about $400, I have a car that should make it to its 20th birthday. Also, he sent a guy to pick me up wihen the car was ready. read more

I was driving out of the south loop out of Chicago when I noticed that my car felt as that it was leaning towards a left. (Had a drag to it) my car was rattling a lot as well as jolting when I tried to turn on the highway. It also made a lot of thudding sounds. In summary I didn't know what was wrong with my car. As I attempted to pull over on the side of the road, my car could barely steer. I could move the entire steering wheel a full 180° rotation without even a car moving. I was terrified. Luckily I was able to make it off to a side street off the highway. I called my brother and asked if there was any close automotive shop nearby. And luckily Bruce's was very close! I drove my car to the shop, One of his guys checked me out, Took the car for a test drive, and realized that one of my rims was not screwed on tightly. He told me that if I continued to drive on the highway I risk losing an entire wheel! He got it all fixed up in less than a half an hour, and I couldn't believe he did it for free. No bullshit here. I brought my car in for a simple tire rotation and balance. They did this quickly and at a fair price. Better yet, Bruce took a look at a car I was going to sell. Although i did not sell it to Bruce, he gave me an honest opinion of what was wrong and we chatted about repair. Then, he was kind enough to fill me in on the maintenance costs of new cars. You won't be coddled by uniformed dudes offering you coffee, like at the chain shops, but in the end what you really want is to have your car fixed. Give Bruce a try. I called for a tow truck and battery replacement yesterday at 11 AM. My car was not picked up until after 8 PM. The next morning, I get a call that my car is done. I was quoted on the phone one price for the tow, new battery, and installation. When I arrived to pick up my car, I was informed that they decided I needed new spark plugs, they installed them, and were charging me for them. I never authorized this. So instead of $185 total that I was quoted in the phone, I was additionally charged an extra $95 for services I did not authorize. Bruce as well as his tow truck driver were very rude. Needless to say I disputed these charges and demanded a refund, which I received. Terrible customer service and a company trying to take advantage of clients. Places like this give mechanics a bad name! read more

I do not recommend this service center as the managers and mechanics at the counter are very unprofessional and rude. They sit there comparing tattoos and texting with their heads down the entire time barely getting up to even greet a customer. The counter is filthy and the men behind are always swearing when I have walked my kids in there. They have zero respect and customer services skills. Anyone can fix cars but what they have to learn is that the customer should be respected and not embarrassed when they bring their cars in. I was waiting at the counter to talk to someone for 10 minutes while the man who I believe runs the place was playing online poker. He could care less and they can acknowledge my thank you after my work was done but they just hand me the receipt and go back to their video poker screen. The best. Honest and dependable. My Volvo dealer during routine warranty work told me my car needed brakes at 35,000 miles for $1200. I took it to Bruce's and they confirmed the brakes were good and safe for at least 10,000 more miles. At 45,000 I had them do the job and it was under $300. My 1988 Lincoln car got stuck at the store and wouldn't run. Bruce towed it in. He replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank and the fuel filter. Had to wait about two weeks to get my car back because he wanted to find an OEM fuel pump $400 because he didn't trust the aftermarket one's $70 and said they would fail in about a year. Couldn't verify which one he actually put in. Never mind that the aftermarket one's have a lifetime warrenty at Murray's, Autozone, Pepboys. It's only my money. Paid about $500 with new fuel filter also. Finally got the car back after burning up the phone lines for two weeks. Drove it home and found that it was idling so low it was dying. Took it back the next day. Guess what? Now I need two oxygen sensors for another $400. Got the car back after another week filled it with gas and drove it for about a week when wa- la it stopped on the Edens in Highland Park. I work in Waukegan and live in Chicago. Gas gauge showed 1/4 tank was still remaining. Towed to a local shop and they said my tank was empty. Guess what? Bruce put in the fuel pump incorrectly. Damn it. Went to Bruce and he said leave the car which I did and I called in a week. He said he couldn't get to it because it was full of gas and he didn't want to spill gas on the floor. Never mind I lost another week without my car. I took the car because I couldn't be without a car anymore. Car was still idling very low and I went to Golf Mill Auto Clinic and Mr. Heim said I needed a new Idle Control Solenoid $125 which I had installed in a day. Have not had time to bring the car back to Bruce's to fix the incorrectly installed fuel pump because I can't be without my car for another two weeks. I will never go back to Bruce's again. He's got young kids working there and they are just guessing. He charges way too much and his work sucks. Don't go to him. read more
