Not an easy thing to do, but definitely can be done as evidenced by Dental Tree of the Heights investing the time to pulse check how the patient feels about dentistry in general. It turns out I needed quite a bit of work done on a variety of teeths in the molar quadrant of both sides of my lower mouth. When I was reclined back in my chair and handed the remote control, thus giving me the awesome responsibility of choosing a flick to take in while my mouth got drilled, I took the task seriously. The dear reader should know that while I have at times in my life avoided even looking toward a dentists office, I have probably also spent years of my life scrolling through movie selections and never actually picking anything to watch. And endless scroll of visual choices. After some time, I asked the dentist assistant to choose and next thing I knew, I was chillin while they was drilling. Netflix and drill, anyone? 5 stars.

Then the dental hygienist came in and informed me that based on his review of my X-rays I needed a deep clean to remove some buildup under my gums (which he specifically said is not a new problem) but he'd be willing to do a medium deep clean. The insurance specialist informed me it would cost over $300, out of pocket. To be clear, I go to the dentist every 6 months and have my entire life. I brush twice a day and floss daily. The dentist today had no concerns about my teeth after reviewing my X-rays. No dentist (or dental hygienist) has ever recommended a deep clean before. And I was told this is "not a new problem." I declined the medium deep cleaning, the hygienist refused to do a regular cleaning and I left. The whole experience felt very scammy. And I still need to get my teeth cleaned.

What could have been an informative and empowering experience quickly turned into a frustrating lesson in how profit can be disguised as patient care. The dentist hinted at some "serious concerns" during my exam, but rather than addressing them with transparency, she dangled the information like bait--only to reveal that I'd need to schedule another type of appointment (with an entirely different fee structure) if I wanted to hear the full story. That kind of manipulative upselling left me feeling more like a sales prospect than a patient. The final insult was being charged an additional $25 to access digital scans I had already paid $355 for. I'm not sure how withholding a patient's own medical records unless they pay an extra fee fits into the "holistic" ethos, but it certainly didn't feel ethical. Thankfully, I visited another holistic dentist soon after and had a completely different (and far more respectful) experience. Had I not done so, this visit to Adore would have left a bad taste in my mouth of holistic care--no pun intended. I'd advise others to do their homework and choose a provider whose priority is truly your health--not just your wallet.
