I love a cafe. LOVE! There is no better simple pleasure than sitting in a cozy cafe with a delightful warm beverage. I'd been to Brown Butter Cafe in the far south area of Ellerslie Industrial a couple of times before but when the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list named them as a Favourite Cafe I knew that I had to return and really dig into their menu a bit more. Opened by a couple who met in culinary arts school, Brown Butter Cafe has gained quite a lot of popularity thanks to their yummy beverages and light Asian-inspired fare. I am a total sucker for a rotating seasonal specialty drink (I need to try them allllllll) and Brown Butter Cafe certainly delivers them. I stopped in right after they opened on a Saturday morning. The cafe can get busy and I wanted to avoid any sort of a rush. This was a huge success because the morning vibe was quiet and peaceful with plenty of available seating options (which is not always the case when it's busy). The space feels very fresh and airy with light wood and lots of greenery but it's a little bit modern as well with it's high, industrial-style ceiling and polished concrete floors. Hanging Edison bulbs bring a warm glow and the friendly staff add to the welcoming atmosphere. Like most cafes, you place your order at the counter and then are free to sit wherever you like. The drink menu features all of the usual cafe suspects, including various versions of lattes and mochas (my fave!) and there are several tea lattes (fogs) available as well. I tend to gravitate towards "special" drinks and was excited to see Brown Butter's Winter Drinks menu. The cookie butter latte was no longer available but thankfully the Pistachio Praline Latte ($5.55) for 12oz was. The staff member asked if we would be dining in, which usually means that the drink will be served in an actual ceramic cup. I love a little bit of latte art - who doesn't? This latte was like a warm hug, which I enjoyed. I found the pistachio flavour to be very strong and almost bitter, which I'm starting to believe might be what all pistachio-flavoured syrups taste like? This isn't the first time that I've had this thought. I wanted more of the promised praline flavour and I found that it got a bit lost. The next time that I visit I really want to try the black sesame latte (from the always menu) because that sounds amazing. Brown Butter Cafe is known for their buns. They're pretty similar to pandesal, a Filipino breakfast staple. The cafe does a few different things with their buns, such as the very popular savoury bun-wiches and sweeter versions where they fill them like a donut. It's a versatile bun! The Good Morning Bun-Wich (Egg, cheddar, avocado, pickled onion, spicy mayo - $7.25) is definitely the one that gets the most hype. Light and fluffy, this handheld is so much of everything that you could want a breakfast sandwich to be. Their famous bun is warm, soft, and slightly sweet with a crispy top. The egg is whipped to a pillowy perfection. I liked the pickled onion but I did find it to be a bit heavy-handed - it over powered the avocado and spicy mayo, both of which I wished there had been more of. Overall, it's easy to see why this lovely little sandwich, er, BUNwich has gained such a following. Unfortunately, the sandwich was served in a to-go box even though we were staying to eat and I felt that an actual plate would have been a bit nicer and help to reduce unnecessary waste. There is other food on the menu as well, including their highly desired katsu (that is only available in limited quantities) and a variety of rice bowls. Any of these would make an excellent lunch and everything on the menu is at a very reasonable price point. I love the concept behind Brown Butter Cafe a lot. I enjoy that the cafe has a little retail section that you can browse through while you wait for your order. It's a wonderful and popular spot in the deep south of Edmonton that adds so much to the community. I look forward to returning and trying more of their food!

Very cozy but busy place! Wanted to see what all the hype was all about with their breakfast sandwich. Did not disappoint! No meat, just egg, cheese, avocado and pickled onions on the most amazing, soft bun I've ever eaten. So yummy! The coffee was great too. Got an Americano. My friend got the crispy chicken rice bowl which apparently wasn't as great. The chicken was dry and the rice was lumpy, overcooked. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place. Worth the twenty minute wait. Located in an industrial/office area with parking.

I've been dying to visit Brown Butter Café ever since their opening in 2017. However, their opening hours were only on weekdays from 8am-3pm. Thankfully now they are open on Saturdays from 9-2pm! I had a hard time choosing what to order because I just wanted to try everything. High up on my list was the Crispy Chicken Bowl. I I tried to order this early in the morning at around 10 am but was informed that it wouldn't be ready until 11-11:30 am. Instead I opted for the Cheese Melt, a delicious creation of caramelized onion and tomato jam... so good! I washed it down with an equally delicious drink, the military matcha latte (comes iced). We didn't stop there. We also opted to try the Classic Cinnamon Bun (recommended by the barista) along with Spiced Brown Sugar Latte and Caramel Apple Chai. Both were good but the clear favorite was the Spiced Brown Sugar Latte...easily one of my favorite lattes of all time! Everything that we tried at the Brown Butter Cafe exceeded our expectations. Service was quick and the food was amazing! Looking forward to having more coffee dates here!

I give them 5 stars solely for the breakfast bunwich. Yes they have good lattes and coffee and Americano, and even other food... but I have come here many times just for that bunwich. They use Monogram beans from Calgary, which is my fave Calgary roaster! Anyway, enjoy my collection of pictures of the same sandwich over and over again.

I was craving a good cup o' joe and a sandwich this afternoon, so I dropped by the Brown Butter cafe and experienced the most delightful lunch I've had in a long time! The meatball sandwich is the most delicious sandwich I've ever eaten. I don't know what witchcraft was involved, but I can't stop thinking about it. I also ordered a cappuccino, which was pretty bangin as well. This place is dangerously close to my work, so I'll be back far too frequently in the future. Take my money.

Came at 10:40am and had no idea most of their food items were not served until after 11:00am - their menu board doesn't indicate this and they don't have a website and there is no info on their FB page. It was a let down being told they only had two things for breakfast and almost wanted to leave, but I made my husband drove all the way here from WEM and didn't know another breakfast place around. I know I seemed really annoyed at the cashier, but the way she talked to me it was like I was supposed to know that most of their items were for lunch only - and I had no way of knowing especially being from out of town. At last, I got grilled cheese for my kids (except no onion jam - not ready until after 11am) and I settled for their meatless bowl which is also not available until 11am but I decided to wait (I had wanted the char siu - they said it takes the longest and won't be ready until closer to noon). The food was fine, really. I enjoyed my meatless bowl albeit the mushroom mixture was a touch too salty. I got a couple of the sweet buns to go and they were very plain - would've been great as a sandwich with fillings (their bun-wich). I can't say I would return the next time I'm back in Edmonton due to their location and that I didn't even get to eat what I wanted to on this visit. If I knew their char siu and chicken bun-wiches/bowls were for lunch only I would not have came for breakfast. And no, it's not weird to expect those items for breakfast - not everyone likes eggs.

Came around 1030 and it was fairly busy. We came with 2 babies so it was nice that they had high chairs. They seem to have a constant flow of people and tables were always occupied. The decor was simple and clean and they had a fairly open floor plan. I ordered the peppermint hot chocolate, crispy chicken bowl and an apple pie bun. Nothing special about the hot chocolate but I was amazed had how juicy and soft the crispy chicken was. I think it was Panko breaded and it was so easy to cut into. I wasn't a fan of the slaw but the chicken was worth trying. The Apple pie bun was pretty good, definitely reminded me of a cinnamon roll but without the icing and cinnamon, there was apple pie filling. They had quite a few other things on the menu that I would like to try such as the matcha bun, cinnamon roll bun, bunwiches, mak n cheese (w/bacon, and ramen crust), so I will probably come back soon.

I really like this cafe! It's a different pace from big chain coffee shops... quieter, brighter modern industrial decor, lots of space (dare I say enough stroller room) and high chairs plus change table in the washroom. The space is highly functional with only a few cushioned seating areas, but that's a small sacrifice for the quality of food & beverage here. Menu selection is narrow but there's definitely good options for breakfast & lunch. We had the cheese melt, sunny day bowl, mint hot chocolate, and raspberry mocha. All of it was delicious & picture perfect. Walking past the kitchen area, you see fresh buns on the rack and I really want to come back for a bunwich now since I was pleasantly impressed with their food with it being a cafe. Service was pretty good especially since the cashier was also the barista for this place too!

Lemon meringue is the front row, and yuzu filled with icing on top is the back row.

I have been coming here every week for the last 4 weeks to pick up their revolving specialty buns and they have all been absolute hits. The staff is ridiculously nice, despite such trying times for the world they remain joyful and inviting. This week was 2 lemon meringue and 2 yuzu buns. The fillings in both are great. The lemon filling is one of the best lemon custards I've had. The coffee is also very good. Whether an iced, or cold latte, their espresso is extremely smooth and flavourful. Their matcha latte is also very smooth and doesn't have that powdery or artificial flavour you find at some chain cafes.

    Menu, latte, meatball bunwich

Wide open concept, lots of space, could do with a few more tables as seating is at a premium. Service was friendly, latte was excellent, meatball sandwich excellent, and the other food options look good as well. I hope they eventually put a menu board up, the current menu is on display when you get to the till. Unfortunately, that means you have no idea what you want or even what they have until you get to the front.....which may mean long lines....especially if the people in front of you are indecisive or picky. Everything homemade, from buns to what's in the middle of the sandwich. Excellent.

Just visited this place on a Friday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of space in the cafe. There's a parkade so you don't have to worry about parking, and the inside is quite spacious - if anything, I think they could definitely fit more tables and chairs in. We ordered the breakfast sandwiches - the good morning and the veggie one. We also ordered the breakfast bowl on the side, as I found the portions on the smaller side. I think the buns for the sandwiches here totally make the sandwich - they taste super fresh and have a hint of sweetness to them. They came regular on the good morning, and pressed on the veggie sandwich - so good both ways. I really enjoyed the egg on the good morning as they were fluffy and light, and the veggie one was great with the hummus. The bowl was good as well, with the egg cooked perfectly. I don't think I would've been full if I only had the bowl, so I'm glad I got a sandwich of my own and shared the bowl. Overall, I would recommend this place for a cute light brunch visit with a clean, quiet environment. Can't wait to return for more of those buns soon!

    Sunny Bowl

This is a great little coffee shop with some fresh food. It struggles a little with minimal decoration and music but more than makes up for it with the care and attention going into the food and drinks. Loved my monogram late, done just perfect. I ate the sunny bowl which was a little too kale heavy to be perfect in my mind, but the freshness really did shine through and I finished feeling full and healthy. I also had a bite of the bun-wiche ... a great little egg sandwich on a croissant style flaky bun. Simple but amazingly fresh and tasty. I had to laugh at the review that was comparing prices to subway.... this is not comparable in anyway. I loved that it was all fresh, original recipes made in house.

Cute little cafe & even with limited windows has the impression that it's bright & clean. Thus I didn't ask about their unique options beyond what was available for cold & hot drinks nor did I sit down. I was also looking at their menu and came for the croffle but they were out. Apparently it's very popular so they didn't have any. Sad face. I was encouraged to try the Hotteok (brown sugar pancake - Korean) which the aroma was amazing and it was so sweet and crunchy with the walnuts inside. I also had the sweet iced pumpkin latte, but it didn't have as much pumpkin flavor as I had hoped. I also couldn't see the bathroom or signs for it.

I know almond croissants are made with leftover pastries, but there was no texture at all. It just fell flat, and lookswise it was physically flat as well lol. It was alright. I wouldn't get the almond croissant again. The Bulgogi Poutine was pretty good. The fries were delicious and crispy. The sauce on top of the fries was slightly sweet, salty, and savory. For me, the bulgogi could've been more flavorful and it didn't taste fresh but I liked the overall dish. Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha was alright. It wasn't spectacular. And I felt the same way about my Lavender London Fog with oat milk. I wish there was more depth in my drink. I think the tea could've been steeped a little longer. Flavor was there in my drink, but it wasn't strong enough. It was slightly disappointing since I've had amazing London Fogs before, and this one just wasn't up to par. Also my drink was slightly warm, not too far off from lukewarm. I feel like the price doesn't exactly correlate with quality for most things here. If we come back here, I'd be willing to try different things and pastries. But I don't think my rating would change much.
