Walter White's Deli Upfront service is good, however, it took 25 minutes to get my order. It has to be the most "just okay" pastrami sandwich I've ever had. The macaroni salad was straight up from Walmart and just shoved in a styrofoam cup....gross. The cleanliness of this place is disgusting, it looks like they haven't been health inspected in the last 10 years. How this is a hot spot in El Paso, I couldn't tell you. OK, this is a mom and Pop's joint but don't get it twisted just because it's a local mom and pops joint does not mean it does not pack flavor and value for the dollar me and the wife have gone three times in the last month because it's so affordable and so close to our home. We picked up sandwiches to pack for a road trip on our way out of town. This place is an establishment, and fresh bread was piled high on one of the back tables, giving a delicious scent to the air. The staff were super friendly and the ingredients were so so fresh! They even offered to wrap the sandwiches in plastic wrap to make sure they didn't get soggy on the drive. Went there for the first time today. The subs are huge!!! Got a regular sub which definitely can feed 2 people, a side of macaroni salad and a soda all for under $10. I LOVE SANDWICHES - Self professed 'the king of sandwiches BTW! We had there French Dip and there Pastrami sandwiches, both hot. We also tried there macaroni salad and potato salad. The Good! The French dip was really really good, I mean Portland good! The Au Jus was good with it and we were impressed by the overall texture and taste of the sandwich. The Pastrami - It was ok, nothing special. The pastrami was not juicy and flavorful as we were hoping for. Also too much on it for a pastrami sandwich. We are used to "the hat" and "Johnnies pastrami" from LA so it does take a bit to impress. Normally you see Pastrami super juicy, mustard and basically naked with maybe a slice of cheese. Pickle on the side. Potato salad and macaroni salad seemed "Benny Keith" (not made in house). Not something to write home about. I hope this was an anomaly and would love to try this again if they make it in house or do something! This is a deli, not a craft kitchen - so don't come in expecting eight different types of breads and artisan aioli spreads. This place felt like home. They've got a lot of varieties, but I usually go for their Italian sandwiches consisting of pastrami, salami, provolone with the lettuce, tomato, oregano, pepper, and oil/vinegar. The real secret to the success is the perfect amount of meat put on bread that doesn't make the sandwich sloppy. Whereas Subway has narrow bread, this place does it right with the wider bread. I got the pastrami with American cheese, mustard/mayo, grilled onion, and banana peppers. My wife got the steak and cheese with peppers mushrooms and onions. They have a $16 special that includes 2, 8" subs 2 sides and 2 drinks. They skimped a little on the meat with both sandwiches but the sandwiches as a whole were extremely good! I could see how a "normal" person would say there's too much bread (hence the reason I say they skimped on the meat) but I LOVE bread and theirs was nice and fresh tasting. BLUF: they make some good subs. I've been to several work-related catered events with Brown Bag Deli's six-foot party subs being served. They were also delicious! I think it's a great alternative to a certain sub sandwich chain place that I also like mainly for easy access and convenience. Perhaps, ingredients are of better quality with generous portion and fresher here IMHO. The downside of this location is the parking especially during lunch hours. It's just too busy and crowded between 7-Eleven with gas pumps, Express Pho and this sub shop in a very tight parking lot with not enough parking stalls IMHO. I try to avoid the peak lunch time to the best of my abilities, so that I can have an easier time looking for a parking space. It's just very hard. Of course, sandwich shop being busy during lunch is a good sign since there are many other alternatives for food around here. Once you taste their subs, you will want to come back here as often as you can, I'm sure. Highly recommended! read more
