This was a late night stop after a long day. We were greeted as we walked in the door and found a table quickly. The beer was spectacular...we both tried a couple suggested house favorites. They did not disappoint! We ordered off the happy hour menu and enjoyed the charcuterie platter and burger with onion rings. The serving size was plenty large for two people. Wow there is a whole other world of beer called barrel aged and my wife and I found it! With this new amazing bar the lake city neighborhood has finally arrived on the eclectic beer and foodie scene. It has an amazing atmosphere equally amazing barrel aged beers and exquisite food! The small plates are delicious! Loved the asparagus and the fish and vegi chips! My current favorite dish is the Ricotta and spring pea ravioli with walnut pesto and pea tendrils! Oh oh and for dessert try the trio of truffles! We also learned that the kitchen is considered self sustainable. They make their own cheese and grow their own herbs and local source everything else! read more

Visited Friday night after hearing good things and was disappointed. The food was just okay, our waitress wasn't friendly and the wine selection is disappointing. I know wine isn't the focus but with so many great local options it's easy to offer a few good choices. On a positive note the other servers and the bartender seemed a lot warmer. My husband had been there a couple times before and said it was better, so I guess that means it just isn't consistent. Definitely not worth getting a sitter to go back. read more

As Lake City/Olympic Hills residents, we're thrilled to have Brother Barrel in the neighborhood! Don't get me wrong, EBB, but your younger sibling is definitely the favorite in the family. We're big beer geeks, and BB didn't disappoint. I'm crazy about the gin barrel-aged Belgian blonde, but all of the experimental beers were really excellent. Love that there's a big taplist of guest sours and funky beers. The food is great - the smoked fish dip is incredible. Lots of different small plates, all of which we really enjoyed! We enjoyed ourselves each time we went to Brother Barrel. The food was good, much better than any other bar food I have ever had anyway, and the ambiance is nice. We especially liked the pesto ravioli with peas and the flat bread was awesome. Our guests enjoyed the GF fish and chips. We enjoyed the decor and the unique use of barrels mixed in. But I had to take off a star because of that: the stools and the chairs in this place are both pretty uncomfortable. A flat piece of wood can only go so far. Still, we will be back. Generally a good experience tonight at Brother Barrel. The food was good, the drinks were delicious. Price point was pretty much expected and there is parking in the back. Food: 4-5 stars. We had the Chickpeas appetizer, roasted wild mushrooms, assorted breads, and Spring pea ravioli. Chickpeas were savory and light. The mushrooms were cooked well and had good flavor, though the cheese was not super-flavorful. The bread was fine (except the rye was maybe a little stale?) and served with nicely garlic-infused oil. Ravioli was delicious and light. Drinks: 5 stars. Husband had Bird is the Word, I had Bat Bite. I didn't try his (I don't like rum) but he really enjoyed it. I had Bat Bite and thought it was terrific. I'd planned to have a glass of white wine after one mixed drink, but liked it so much I had a second. Ambiance: 4 stars. Seating is mixed, but all wood so numb butt, here we come. Fairly dark, much quieter than next door, and NO CHILDREN. Your kids are fine, you are good parents, but it's nice sometimes to eat without watching your toddler picking her nose. And no televisions-- that's a nice break and I really appreciated that. Service: Hm. 3 stars? We walked in 5 minutes after opening, not very busy. Were told to seat ourselves and got menus immediately. Drinks were quick, other food came as appropriate. Here's the but... when we we're done, we're done. I hate waiting for a check, and I hate waiting for someone to take the check even more. We tried to hand the server our card when he dropped the check, but he didn't take it. And we waited. I eventually got out my keys and looped my purse over my arm in an "I'm needing to head out" gesture. I think maybe they need a second server-- the bar staff was running food and we waited too long once we were done. We will be back, and we'll be hoping that there might be one more person to help keep the service moving slightly better. read more

We met some friends here for drinks, but after seeing the menu I wish we had brought an appetite. Our server was friendly and helpful. I ordered the "green dragon" cocktail and loved it. After other members of the party tried my drink they all ordered one. The price for the drink was a little high, but not unreasonably. This will be a great date night spot in the future. There are massive murals on one of the interior walls that remind me of a "where's Waldo" scene. They definitely make a good conversation piece. read more

My husband and I went here on a Friday night. When we walked inside I was pleasantly surprised! The space is large and the decor is amazing! We sat at the bar and was greeted right away by our server. We each ordered a cocktail and they were both great! As for food we ordered fried veggies, fish spread and the meat and cheese plate. All dishes were very good. The meat and cheese plate I was most pleased with. It came out on the huge cutting board and looked so amazing I could not wait to dig in! I am a huge fan of meat and cheese boards, but usually end up disappointed due to the lack of food. But, this was plenty and everything they had on it worked so well together. The food here is seriously good. We had the beet salad, flatbreads, creme brulee (best I've ever had!) and more. So good! The beer selection is really fun, as I love Belgian sours. The north end is looking up. I'm happy to have a new addition to Lake City that has great cocktails. Beer is fine but I'm not on that wagon. The food is chosen to appeal to various desires. It delivers with full flavors, well made dishes, and high quality ingredients. The onion soup will make a Francophile happy with big flavor and bubbling Gruyere . (Slightly sweet for some.) Beet salad has always been large enough for two with really good beets. Flatbreads have a few toppings and are a good share. Last, I have had the veg of the day each time. I am charmed by the Staub iron ware and the grilled vegetable or mushrooms. Overall- easy, friendly, unfussy bistro atmosphere with great service. read more

Had a very disappointing experience this evening. For starters, I wasn't overly impressed by the waitress. She was pretty snarky & impatient. I had ordered the cheese curds as an appetizer but apparently she didn't hear me so about 25 minutes had passed and still no cheese curds so we had to ask. Once she got them ordered they came out, very small portion and they're tiny curds so really didn't satisfy that craving. Overall it took about 50 minutes to get our main entree...which is an insane amount of time to wait to get your meal. We ordered the fish and chips & the burger, nothing to write home about for their food. Average at best in my opinion. Also, my boyfriend ordered chips as his side & his came out wrong with a salad instead. After two mistakes and a far too long of a wait just to get the food the waitress didn't even give us some sort of compensation for our experience. She apologized about the wait but that's it, I know it's not her fault for that wait but overall not a great time here & no interest in ever returning. read more

The beer is by far my favorite of any local brewery. If you love wine or whiskey you have to try this place. So many of their beers are made in whiskey and wine barrels. So yummy! I have had a lot of their food and everything has always been perfect. The cheese and meat board, the clam bake, flat breads and fish and chips have always been a hit. Stopped by last night on our way home from a movie for a drink and was impressed. My wife had a cocktail and I sampled a few of their barrel aged beers. The environment in this place is really cool. All the people that worked here where very friendly and really seemed to know the food and drinks that where being served. I really enjoyed the idea that I could smaller pours of different beers. It was nice to be able to sample a few different types. I don't tend to enjoy sour beer but being able to get a 1oz pour to try a few different ones made it great. I would recommend their Gin barrel aged beer before they sell out and it takes another year + for more to be made! read more

Met a few friends there for a few drinks and dinner, nice quite environment....however the place is really expensive...food was good but the portion sizes were super small for how much they costs.....no indication of happy hour prices so the same drink was 2 different prices....cocktails were 12 bucks!! Yikes! But not listed on the drink menu. The staff was friendly and the place was clean! The place is cool looking, and the parking situation is solid. We didn't try the food. The thing is, and I hate to say it, but their beers aren't that great. I tried their flight of barrel aged beers. The sours weren't sour. Their bourbon blend was undrinkable. I thought the ambrosia kriek and fauntleroy were probably the best. Overall I was disappointed. We have been wanting to try here for quite some time and we finally were able to pop in! We weren't sure if we wanted a full meal or not so we decided to go with a cheese/meat plate and a few drinks. This is a place we frequent, and their barrel aged beers are fantastic- as are their cocktails. The head bartender is great at his job and any drink made by him is phenomenal. That being said, some of the decisions in the kitchen haven't been great lately. There was an oyster special for a bit, the oysters were not separated from their shells basically at all so we had to mangle them with our fork to eat them- I see they've added oysters permanently so I'm hoping the shucking skills have improved (they were out last time so we couldn't try them and see). There was a special on Valentine's Day- I believe it was an octopus crudo, which was basically inedible- inconsistently chopped and chewy with confusing flavors, we couldn't finish it and watched the same thing happen at the table next to us. I also had ordered the ancho chicken taco plate recently and found the chicken to be dry and large chunks rather than a more shredded moist approach. Additionally, we always loved the charcuterie board- however now it doesn't come on a board anymore, it comes on an odd picnic style tray? I'm not sure if there has been new leadership in the kitchen specifically but a lot of the changes have been somewhat disappointing as far as that goes. We will always continue to come back for drinks, but since we've been coming for over a year and noticed the decline in the kitchen I felt it was worth mentioning, as we used to eat here and have become reluctant to try any new specials. read more

I'll have to come back for dinner. Made a quick stop here last night for a drink and was impressed. I sat at the bar and watched the bartenders make some impressive looking drinks. I just had a glass of wine. My husband tried three 2oz pouts of different beer. A great option for something you may not want a full pint of like a sour beer. Free parking in the back is a huge perk.
