Brooklyn Fare has deteriorated in recent years despite the internal physical improvements they have made to the store, with the addition of a new sushi bar when you walk in and a streamlined Deli counter case. My issue is more so with the freshness of the produce - on numerous occasions, I have purchased avocados that are pure black on the inside. I've also experienced the same types of issues with eggs and fish, as some others have commented. Minus two stars for this. On the fish - be sure to ask the employee working behind the counter if it is fresh. If it was not delivered that day then do not buy it to be on the safe side. The prices on some items too are a bit ridiculous. Last summer they had a wall of thermoses priced at over $30 bucks a piece. Sort of ridiculous. The breakfast sandwiches are really great in the mornings as well as the freshness of the muffins. read more

I really, really liked this place!! Its basically a market with some great features, the cheese area and the hot food. The cheese area is manned by a gentleman well versed and knowledgable of cutting the cheese, the history of the cheese, and what it pairs well with. You have to give the Mediterrean Salad spread a try, feta cheese, oil and some excellent spices with some crackers is simply BANGIN'. The hot food area if staffed by really nice workers who were all polite and eager to help. The selection of food was on-point. I went with the steak (sliced), roasted potatoes, and broccoli slaw. This meal was well packed and well packed with flavor!! There were so many other things that I wanted to try and I will be back to try them. I did see another customer order a sandwich wrap......and it was STACKED!! The place is clean and there are many wholesome items here for sale. Nice supermarket in the downtown Brooklyn area with a wide array of items to purchase. I love that they have such a big selection of fresh vegetables. I always find them to be fresher than my local market. They also have great seafood, specifically the salmon and shrimp. I don't go anywhere else when I'm in the mood for either because I know Brooklyn Fare has the best. The prices are definitely more expensive than most places but not surprising given the area. I always spend way more than I expected when getting basic groceries. The chicken is definitely way more pricier than other places for the same thing. The staff is very rude and consistently want everyone out well before they close. This is a neighborhood grocery store, very small, and it often takes less than 5 minutes to get what's needed and check out. If they close at 9 and one shows up at 8:45, it's very feasible to be out by 8:50. I was followed by a woman who I understand to be the manager who muttered at me to "step down" to the register. Normally I wouldn't bother coming here when I could get much lower prices at Stop & Shop but the meat counter actually has some crazy good deals. Brisket is usually $5.99/lb here for whole packer, and everywhere else that's usually $10+. They're also good for specialty ingredients and will special order things for you. I'm a little worried how they'll hold up with Whole Foods now open just down the street targeting the same demographic but with lower prices. I'd hate to see Brooklyn Fare get edged out, not just because it's easy to hate on Amazon but because their meat counter is genuinely superior. Support Brooklyn Fare! read more

Brooklyn Fare is a few blocks from where I work. At first, I thought it was quite far but it really isn't. My company has an account with Brooklyn Fare where the interns can get their paid lunch. It's a great deal. I absolutely adore Brooklyn Fare because it's humongous, everything is fresh, and their food is divine and plus it's the only place I know of near work that sells one of my favorite snacks: peanut butter filled pretzels! Brooklyn Fare has a wide selection of items from snacks, to fruits, dairy products, and etc. They have a great lunch special with lots to choose from. I usually come here for their lunch specials. I absolutely love this place. Whenever I'm in the area I have to go in, even if i have no cash on me I just have to browse around. (Luckily I am in the area about once every week or two weeks haha.) Sure the layout it confusing, (I liked the layout that they had before a little better) but I can always ask anyone who works there to help me out. The service is great, they're always polite and helpful. The food looks great. They have an interesting and varied selection of beer, cheeses, jams, sauces, pastas, baking products, cookies etc... They have all these products I can never find in the grocery stores and supermarkets around me in Queens or Nassau. They have San Marzano tomato sauces. All kinds of baking chocolates and chocolate chips. They have a cool selection of coffees. All kinds of sodas. They also have tons of gluten free products for those who have that allergy or are into that. Oooh and the soaps look great! It's especially a great place if you're looking for very specific products. The only real downside for me is the price. Sometimes I go and I want to buy everything, but I know I can't, it's just so overpriced. Then again, they have so much you can't find elsewhere. Except the regular chocolate bars, those are so overly priced and I rather go to Economy Candy in the city, but that's only for the chocolate bars. Look out for the specials, they're not that much of a discount but every discount helps right? They also have a rewards card. If you've never been here, do check it out though. As far as the supermarkets go, they are definitely on the pricier side. However, this is not your typical supermarket : it is a gourmet market which offers a widespread selection of unique, high quality products you will struggle to find at your average store. I often stop by during my lunch hour to get their sandwich special which offers a pretty decent deal for 7 bucks ($7 for a roll, $8 for a hero) that includes a choice of soda and a fruit or chips. They offer a great variety of gourmet sandwiches which you can customize to your liking. By now I have eaten through every item on their sandwich menu. My favorites (in no particular order) are the grilled veggie(ask to get it pressed on the panini grill), the house made beef pastrami (ask for pickle), the grass-fed beef, and the pulled chicken. My choice of the bread (never underestimate the value of the bread when it comes to a sandwich) is usually a multi-grain roll. It is so good, I would eat it by itself, without anything, with no hesitation. Even though I do prefer the sandwich selection at the Garden of Eden, the lengthier walk to Montague Street makes it impractical for me to choose it over Brooklyn Fare. On the day when I try to eat lightly, their salad bar offers a great variety of fresh, high quality produce which includes spinach, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, feta cheese, artichokes and grilled chicken. Adjacent to it is the olive bar of great variety. Their house made yogurt with fig preserves, granola and fruit, is to die for. Oh, and they do offer a cash back if you have the store card. For someone who comes here on a regular basis, it is very well worth to have one. read more

I love this market. It has such a great variety and carries obscure items that you won't find at any bodega. Lots of cheeses, some of which you can sample, and a ridiculous assortment of (expensive) artisanal granolas. They carry a vast amount of bobs red mill products, spices, etc. I also enjoy their pre-cooked veggie boxes, ie roast broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, etc, which are actually relatively cheap. Certain things in this store are a great value (Brooklyn Fare-branded spices and some of the produce that you buy by the pound or piece). The produce is usually of great quality. But generally everything else is much more expensive. If you can find an item at Trader Joe's or Target a few blocks away, it will almost definitely be (much) cheaper there---like 30-50% less is common. If you can find an item at Whole Foods (which you probably can), it's maybe a bit cheaper there (10-30%). One annoying thing about this store is that items are frequently not next to their price labels so you have to use the one price check machine in the store to tell how much an item is. I'd guess something like a 10% of all the price labels are upside down for some reason. This store is jam packed with stuff with very narrow aisles. It's kinda run down to be honest. If you live in downtown Brooklyn/Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill and you want something mildly exotic (lemongrass, a particular mushroom, kimchi, challah, gochujang, etc.), you can probably find it here. But if you want something particularly exotic (miso paste, gochugaru, dumpling wrappers, special cuts of meat, etc.), you're out of luck. The staff range between friendly and distant with most being in the latter. I'm perfectly fine with that. I don't understand the other reviewers who say the staff are rude because they aren't in my experience. The meat section is rather hit or miss. They always have the staples (ground beef, chicken breasts, chicken thighs, and steaks). But they're frequently out of stock of the less common meats (ground lamb, ground pork, pork chops, etc.). The less common meats are just thrown all over the place without any real organization. Regardless, the meat here is mostly of the organic/natural/grass fed variety so it's pricy. Several weeks ago I started a detox that incorporated smoothies and food. However, the recipes called for things that pathmark or key food do not stock. I've passed this spot at least twice a week and now had reason to go inside. Tahini, chia seeds, snap crisps, and other things that i normally wouldn't buy are all here and have now become staples in my kitchen which has turned me into a cooking machine...which is great for my wallet. The deli bar has great sandwich options for lunch. There are also numerous prepared food items including sushi, soups, and veggies. The staff is very friendly. My only complaint is that some items are quite expensive, which is tricky as there are no other supermarkets in the neighborhood. Shopping there during the pandemic continued to be convenient and safe. Then came the day in April or May when the normally orderly and friendly check-out stations -- owing the the faithful and committed staff and manager -- were all gone. In their place, an over-dressed hostess and a very tall security guard. It's alienating, complicated, and upsetting to shop there now. I don't care how many ways you rearrange the store, it's not better, and it's not better because it is no longer staffed by the people who made the store what it was. It is no longer Brooklyn Fare. Call it something else, and team who were our neighbors for so long. It's a bad vibe. read more

I like Brooklyn Fare for their cleanliness and variety. They carry a large selection of nearly all products to suit the diversity of the neighborhood. The fruits and vegetable section- one of my favorites- is always stocked with fresh produce. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and ready to assist. In the a.m hours there's a grill back by the deli serving everything from coffee to omelettes and pancakes. The food is always good and it's become a regular spot of mine. There's also a hot and cold food bar plus a large salad selection with plenty of toppings during lunch hours. read more

Horrible customer service and horrible staff. I ordered a sandwich and stepped out to make a call. When I arrived back I notice the price was a bit lower and asked if it was bacon in my omelet (because I asked for bacon on it) at which point the lady took my omelet back to slap on the bacon she forgot. I explained to her that I wanted my bacon to be INSIDE the omelet, made with it how it usually is made not just slapped on because she forgot and now she's rushing. She then went back and forth with me saying the bacon was already cooked so it shouldn't matter. At this point I became frustrated because SHE forgot to add bacon and didn't even apologize and now is trying to take the lazy way out. I then ask to speak with a manager who name was Jennifer. She barely spoke English and wasn't helpful at coming up with an resolution. I wasted 20 minutes here and ended up rushing to make it on work on time with an empty stomach. This is tough. I really, truly want to love this store. Yet I won't go back there after my experience this morning. I have always struggled with how overpriced they are, yet somehow I find it worth it because they carry a lot of gourmet and unique products. Often times though, their quality is lacking. Case in point my recent purchase of a fruit and a packaged salad. Both went bad almost immediately. My interaction with the manager this morning to get a refund ($1.67) was completely ridiculous. The store return policy (posted above the registers) is totally bogus, as she refused to refund the second item, despite having a receipt which is the only thing that the sign required in my case. I walked out in such disbelief that it's doubtful that I will ever shop there again. I am a twice a week customer, shame on them for treating loyal clientele in such a manner. Prices can be reasonable if you are selective about what you buy. For example, I like their rotisserie chicken ($9.99). To that point, they have a varied selection of prepared foods you can buy for lunch or dinner. I moved to NYC about three months ago, and I was excited to be in such close proximity to a grocery store. Brooklyn Fare is basically an exact block away from me, so I love the convenience of being able to swing by quickly to pick up anything I need. Things I like about Brooklyn Fare (or as I like to call it, "B'Fare"): - The breadth and variety of products. Props to the deli and cheese counters, and the salad bar isn't too bad either. - Tons of amazing produce options. There's plenty of your usual staples to the rather uncommon- definitely impulse bought that purple cauliflower - There are lots more "obscure" ingredients available. I can't find anything particularly... unique at Trader Joes (think tapioca flour), but I have almost never struggled to find something at BFare. Except if it's super duper obscure. Not gonna find that rare jarred peruvian pepper I like at this store... or maybe I haven't looked hard enough? - Their beer selection is pretty awesome! Definitely something for everyone here. (But can you bring back the Sixpoint Bengali, pls?) Things I'm not so hyped on: - Many of the cashiers just have this... particularly unhappy demeanor. I wouldn't give any stars for exceptional customer service. Not to say it's bad, but it's not good either? - With that being said, many of the cashiers forget to ask about using my points card. Kind of a bummer to realize you can't add your points card after your credit card has been swiped on a big grocery purchase. Wish you would have asked me? This has happened on many occasions, which sucks, considering my points should be adding up to get me a discount. (I think it's like 400 points for $10 off?) I have a bad memory, and they stopped giving physical cards, so I don't have much working in my favor. - Products are often not matching up with the labels on the shelves. I had a particularly difficult time finding soba noodles because each container had lo mein noodles instead. And there were no backups behind the empty boxes. If the product is not available, maybe don't show it on the shelf? - I've seen many items marked as a sale item that have not rang up as such when I was checking out. - I guess this is just a marketing technique (and possibly not unique to BFare), but all the lower priced items are placed on the higher or lower shelves. Makes it difficult for the budget shopper to find the basics. - Pretty much everything is more expensive here than it would be at another store. A couple cents here or there to several dollars depending on the product. This isn't a dealbreaker to me as I'd rather pay for convenience and I like supporting small businesses, but something to be aware of. - It's kind of maze like, so difficult to find something new if you don't know where it is. But I've gotten more skilled with it in time. None of these bummer items will deter me from shopping at the lovely BFare, but wanted to share my experiences. Lately the store has not being following the 6ft distancing policy. Folks in queue stand right next to you and when you ask them to keep some distance they get upset. To add the store employees keep walking back and forth right next to you in the queue aisle which is quite narrow to begin with. Changing my review due to the horrible customer service I encountered today. I've been coming here for a year now since I live directly across the street. I often buy the very large water containers that go in the fridge and have them delivered. The reason for this is because I have very advanced bone cancer and have had bones replaced and extensively damaged in my spine, hip, shoulder and back. And I'm currently getting chemotherapy every other week that makes me very sick. I come here because it's hard for me to take the subway to the much farther other supermarkets. If there was anything that I could easily get to I would never come back here again. Now I never, and I mean NEVER disclose this, but after being told I couldn't have the water cases delivered today by a cashier who has rung me up for delivery of them before, I decided to inform her. She checked with the manager who also has told me yes in the past and today she said no. I then asked to speak with her superviser who I explained in even more detail why I needed the water delivered and that I physically can't carry them and always have them sent over and his response was basically "as soon as you get better we have to stop" Now the delivery notice they have says within a three block radius delivery is free. From my front door I can see their front door, that's how close I am. So after being extremely embarrassed by having to explain this to 4 different people, I'm writing it here to warm other people about their horrible customer service. read more

Great place to do your shopping if you leave in Downtown Brooklyn. Staff is helpful and friendly. Even though, I came here to finish my TG dinner shopping and it was super busy and crowded, the staff was still patient and nice. The products from the vegetable section were fresh and greener than I expected. I liked that my cashier offered me a membership card so I can keep shopping and get points. I would definitely make this place my go to, they were the only ones around here who carried "chili paste" from Heinz. I needed it so badly for my husband's recipe. read more

Yes, Brooklyn Fare is most known for being where Chef's Table is, but it's actually also a deceptively large grocery store as well. It's shaped a little funny, so ask for some help if you need to find something specific (beer's in aisle 1, by the way). I really didn't expect their produce selection to be so good, so it was a pleasant surprise when I was able to pick up relatively fresh bean sprouts and bunched cilantro. Of course, their beer selection is pretty damn extensive. They have stuff in the fridges and in packs on the shelves. Basically every style you could want, and some hard-to-find imported stuff. Only real complaint is the checkout line is still that of a smaller place. Just a few registers and not a lot of room to manuever. Staff was nice though. Sounds about right for Brooklyn. read more

My one and only gripe with Brooklyn Fare is that it can be a bit on the pricey side. If I'm doing any serious grocery shopping, and/or I have the time, I'd rather walk down to Trader Joe's for some better deals. That being said, Brooklyn Fare has some GREAT produce and lots of it. And, being only 2 blocks from my apt, as well as right across the street from the subway station, it is incredibly convenient. The deli section has yummy sandwiches as well as a food bar, which they will heat up for you when you order it. Also, being Latina, I was happy to find the decent Goya section they have. They have a number of healthy alternative options, which I also really like. Cheese Island is MY place for freshly made muzz when a caprese salad is on the menu in summer months in my place. I enjoy the variety of dulce de leche jars they have stocked, and the several varieties of wild-caught salmon (only farm-raised near my place). I run here on lunch often to grab sandwiches, a pre-made sushi roll, and the last few ingredients for the dinner I cook later that evening. You go to the deli my main problem is employees having their cells all the time touching their cells and then not changing their gloves. Not all but some. They don't pay attention to what I'm requesting so many times i get home and i get something totally different. So glad George is back the only time i wll order anything from the deli. My girlfriend and I tried the "cafe" for breakfast on MLK day, looking for a quick over the counter breakfast. Granted a holiday may not have been the best representation of the usual service (or serious lack thereof) but we were so aggravated that we left without even getting a coffee. We waited in front of the pastry and coffee register for over five minutes while an employee refilled stock and did god knows what else behind the counter. I tried to get her attention but was ignored. We shuffled down to the other register thinking there was some sort of system that we weren't aware of. If there were any "order here" signs we completely missed them. A customer in front of us actually offered us her spot in line, saying "You've been waiting so long..." When we got to the front of the line and tried to order the cashier interrupted us, "You have to order down there" and pointed to where we had just been waiting (and ignored). At this point we were irritated but we shuffled back over. The same employee that had ignored us initially proceeded to walk away from the register altogether when we got there. A different employee sauntered over and finally asked "Can I help you?" We tried to order and again we were interrupted, "Our breakfast is broken down for the day...see?" And she pointed to another employee standing at a small buffet station who was putting things away. Four employees, zero service. I started to explain to her what had just happened but stopped when she gave me a look of complete disinterest. I turned to my girlfriend, "Let's go some place else." We congratulated them when they expanded. But! When I was 5 months pregnant, they changed their policy not to deliver anymore under a certain price point. While that makes total business sense, I said I didn't know and since this was a very recent change, could they make an exception. They asked me why they should make an exception. I explained that they knew me and that I was 5 months pregnant?! no dice. so, i asked them to refund my groceries, and THAT was when they made the exception.
