I used to plan my San Diego trips around brunch at Broken Yolk in Pacific Beach. Unfortunately the feel and novelty have been lost with the addition of more locations. The quality of omelettes at the El Centro location is also sub par. I stopped ordering them because I am always disappointed, however, the eggs benedict are always delicious. This is my second time here. The first time I went was the San Diego location. Although the el centro location may not be as appealing as San Diego. The food and restaurant overall is just as good. The worst customer service so far, I waited 45 minutes for the server to ask us what we wanted to drink. I ordered a turkey sandwich and berry salad. Lauren was our waitress and she was very friendly. However, I got a tuna sandwich instead of turkey. But once I mentioned something she said they had made a tuna sandwich instead of a turkey one. So she fixed it and everything worked out. Every time we travel from New Mexico and Arizona - home to La Jolla - we make it a point to stop at the El Centro Broken Yolk. Fantastic Sunset Mimosas and Cobb Salad - to say nothing of the stupendous egg dishes. Take Imperial off of Interstate 8 and drive north approximately 3 miles until you see the Social Security Building on the right. Turn right at the stop light in front of the SS Building and turn left at the next street. Drive around to the back of the SS Building and look to the right where you will see The Broken Yolk. There is a parking lot in that area, and you can easily park in front of TBY. (There is not a street sign at your turn off of Imperial in front of the SS Building. I think the majority of people that think this place is great never learned to cook an egg and care more about the size of their plate, then what's actually served on it. This place has large portions making you feel like you're really getting some great breakfast deal, but really when you try the food you wish that the portions were smaller because it literally tastes like nothing. The food has texture and no flavor, which is really creepy because when I asked if the hasbrowns were made in house or premade, the waitress looked at me like I asked if an alien delivers it every morning or if they have a chef back there....you know...in the kitchen? Anyway, they have gluten free pancakes but why would you want to eat them if the staff doesn't even know what gluten free is? Train your staff better, encourage some salt or seasonings or keep this restaurant in San Diego. read more

It was my first time here and I wasn't disappointed. The food was tasty and it came out fast. The service and friendliness was exceptional which is sort of rare here in the valley. We ate here today and we're greeted by two very friendly hosts..they placed us somewhere great since we had a stroller. Our service on the other hand was horrible. Our waitress only came to take our order and didn't come back until I got up to ask someone else for water. You can tell they hired some very unexperienced staff. Train your servers better! Yuck! I would have given this place 2 to 3 stars, but something is seriously wrong with the water they serve here. The last three times I've been here the water had this weird chemical taste. They either don't do a good job cleaning their glasses or there is something they are adding to the water that is seriously off. Definitely would not recommend. Husband wrote a review (Edward Morales) and was willing to change it due to the fact that the managers contacted us and sent us a gift card to give it another go. First of all, we gave it the benefit of the doubt seeing as it was brand new and in its first week when we went. Though I believe that first impressions are the most important. If we were expected to give them "slack" for it being their first or second day, we should have gotten the same in return on our bill. Second time we went, it was worse. The waitress came once to get our drinks and orders and that was it. Other various employees brought out our food, and never brought one of my parties meals. We couldn't even ask for it since we never had refills or asked how we were. When we let the waitress know, she kind of shrugged and looked around our table as if we were hiding it. She took it off the bill and handed it back without a sorry or smile. Once I paid, I asked for a manager to let them know our experience and he didn't really care. This was my first time going to this restaurant. It was okay to me. I was the first of my party to get there. The hostess was friendly, I was sat right away and had a drink order taken promptly. However, 10 minutes went by after the drinks we brought. I wanted to order another drink and no one came to my table. My sister showed up we waited for someone to come by to take her drink order. Another 10 minutes go by and my mother arrives and we wait another 10 minutes still no server has come to our table. My mom decides to go ask the servers standing talking to each other who our server is because we still had no idea. After that the service wasn't bad but the food was okay. I got a Bloody Caesar which tasted mostly like olive juice. My sister got an iced mocha coffee that didn't come with ice in it? My food was warm at best. My moms hash browns were under cooked.
