And while our visit was admittedly time-constrained (the place closes at 4 pm on Sundays), when it was all said and done, I had only the one ($8) 2-oz sample and walked away with only a single ($33) 375L bottle - the net of which was under 15 total ounces of mead for over $40. Sure the cost of supplies has gone up, especially I assume for the more exquisite fruits, and they clearly have a significant amount of square footage to pay for at this deceivingly swanky 'parlor' location, but at $2.67 an OZ, even a brief session, will be an expensive one. So why am I still OK with the 5-stars? In this case those were awarded based on the over and above service from the knowledgeable bartender, the quality of the huge venue, as well as the depth and breadth of the options they produce, including fruits you've never heard of (yumberry and quince?) or those you never would associate with mead, like date or fig mead. Oh ya, they also provide a nice cocktail program (incl 'mead cocktails'?!) and a few actual random beers as well - altho nothing hoppy if that's important. The quality of the product also confirmed everything I read on UnTapd.....but damn, for the money, it sure better!

Every bottle feels like it's crafted with care, and you can really taste the difference. The flavors are unique and unexpected -- from bright, fruity blends to rich, spiced varieties, there's something for every palate. What makes it stand out most is the personal touch -- you can tell the family behind it really loves what they do. The tasting experience feels warm and welcoming, not corporate or rushed. Whether you're new to mead or already a fan, you'll find yourself impressed (and probably leaving with more bottles than you planned). If you're looking to support local craft makers and discover something truly different, this meadery is a must-visit. Their creativity and quality shine through in every sip!

The cocktail bar (the Honeybee Tiki Bar) is suitably tiki-themed, and you can get either mead-laced tiki drinks, or drinks from their tasting menu. I got a 1 oz pour of "Still Dreamin'" melomel made with orange blossom honey, orange zest and vanilla, as well as the 5 oz. "Tangerine Dream" session mead, which was lightly carbonated (tasted like a dreamsicle float, as opposed to the classic style of mead which is more viscous and not unlike a liqueur in texture). Both were very tasty, and this was a nice way to try different styles. My fiance had a mocktail with pineapple and passion fruit that still fit into the tiki vibe. Our server was attentive enough to be helpful but in the background enough to not be pestering us; good balance. While they don't serve food themselves, watch their social media for the rotation of visiting restaurants; we had amazing duck fat buffalo wings and sweet potato fries from Dak Dak Wings in Villa Park! Overall, mead doesn't just have to be at the Renaissance faire! Check out Standard Meadery's creative offerings soon.

The owner, Rico, is a friendly guy who likes to chat about what goes into each batch of mead he makes, and shows a clear passion for the craft. Each month (sometimes every other week) he has new meads on tap, which incentives regular visits. The flavor profiles of each drink usually differ greatly, and overall it's a fun experience very similar to visiting a winery, yet a more casual and relaxing environment. Foxes Den Meadery has two types of drinks on tap. Still meads, which are higher % ABV served room temp, and Sessions, which are about half the ABV and are served cold. If you get a chance to try the BOP Session (banana orange pineapple) which is one of their staples, I highly recommend it. It's a refreshing drink which is smooth and easy to drink, and I usually take some bottles (and soon to be cans) to go. The coconut variation of the BOP is one of my favorites, but Rico has made many iterations of his BOP that are each worth trying when you have the chance. If you're in the area, or willing to make a trip (which is worth it), I'd highly recommend visiting Foxes Den Meadery. They offer unique and interesting alcoholic drinks with robust flavor profiles. Easily one of the highlights of Yorkville.

Located on Elston a wee bit north of Montrose, Second City Meadery has been open for about 18 months. We tried the Intro Flight, four meads including Session City (grapefruit), Angelic (a "traditional" dry mead), Summer in the City (pineapple and peach mead with coconut), and Barrel Aged Wildflower (Michigan Wildflower aged in a whiskey barrel). Of the four, my love and I enjoyed Summer in the City the most, as it was a sweeter mead but not the sweetest. Our friends went with the splurgier Brewer's Flight. From their flight we tried a sip of the Blue Line (blueberry mead with vanilla and cashew), and we liked it so much that we ordered a glass of it. There was a handy water dispenser for us to hydrate ourselves between tasty sips of mead. While I am still a beer kind of guy, the meads were a fine changeup. Since we live very close by, I imagine we will visit again this summer.

We wanted to try it all so we ordered the Intro Flight and the Adanced Flight. These are all sweet and Hugh percentages, so be careful. They do not serve food there so eat something beforehand to soak up the alcohol, but don't get too full. Even though the flights seem like little pours in the small glasses, but it's actually a lot. I would definitely come back again for some mead.
