I was so pleasantly surprised by Broken Barrel! I made last minute plans to meet some friends here for brunch, so I didn't get to do my usual Yelp research before paying it a visit. We went at noon on a Saturday, and the front bar was empty upon walking in, which I thought was strange because brunch on Saturday in Chicago is busy pretty much anywhere. I was shocked to see just how big the inside space was, and then the patio around back, which is where all the other brunch goers were seated. The patio is fantastic. Booths, tables, tvs, and retractable canopies for rainy days like this one. They offer a $25 bottomless mimosa deal which was a great value. Really the only downside was that they served it with small plastic cups, which just seemed like unnecessary waste. For lunch, I went with the hangover breakfast sandwich and subbed the brisket for bacon. I mean, anything involving a pretzel bun and I'm sold, but this sandwich was seriously a winner! Two of my friends got the nashville spicy chicken sandwich and now I want to come back for lunch or dinner just to try this because it looked unreal. Another friend ordered the steak skillet which she loved. Our server was friendly and attentive. This is a great place to keep in mind if you are dining with a large group, because they have a space to accommodate. It's a fun spot with good bar food and drinks. The smoky chipotle was the best of the two, the smokiness was very subtle and not in-your-face and the flavor of the chipotle definitely was present and nice. The wings were cooked just right and not dried out. The even re-heated well in the oven the next day. On the other hand, the garlic buffalo was okay flavor wise. I was expecting more garlic flavor. Broken Barrel is fun sports bar off of Southport. It is great for game day and nfl sundays. The food here is good bar food. I got the pulled pork sandwich (very tasty) with a side of tots that were amazing. Pro tip - get honey mustard with the tots because it is the best condiment they got and it is 10/10. The drinks are very good and I highly recommend getting a bloody mary. However, get it from the bar because I have found that it is much better when they make it in front of the customer. We love coming to broken barrel for so many reasons, but probably one of the top ones is that you can choose so many different environments within the same location to sit at. We usually enjoy sitting outside, and they're always really great about temperature control even in the winter. The back patio is huge, there's tons of TVs, and for big games, they put the audio through back there, which makes it a very enjoyable atmosphere. They also have a lot of different indoor options if you're looking to sit at a bar or looking for a large table. The food is always pretty good. Nothing out of this world, but for a place that is super busy quite often on weekends in late nights, there's a wide variety from salads to tacos to burgers and it's always pretty consistent. They have a good variation of drink specials on every day of the week. They cater to the younger college crowd mostly because of its proximity to DePaul, but also have a good variety of people in there at all times. The bar is much bigger than it looks from the front and has plenty of TVs to play multiple games at once. They have a pretty big drink menu and everything I have gotten off of this menu has been great! Good cocktails and the beer is fresh. Special shoutout to the margaritas! The food is generally good. Is BBQ centric so its a little hard to screw that up. Still, the wings and the brunch give this place a leg up on the rest of the competition. The Sex Panther sauce is SPICY. All of my friends really enjoyed their food here. The only downside is that the service here is a little spotty. I know that we are in the middle/end of COVID so I will give them a break, but it appears to be a bit of a theme in all of these reviews. My guess is that the servers have too many tables as we only saw ours 4 times in the 2ish hours we were there last night. The food also took forever to get and mine came out a little cold. It wasn't the worse thing, especially because I had super spicy sauce, but I think it was sitting for some time before getting picked up before bringing it to the table. Welcome to the neighborhood Broken Barrel! Overall a pretty great spot. Brand new bar, all shiny and new. And while I didn't have much expectations for the food, I left the last several times here pleasantly surprised. The food is excellent! From the hangover breakfast sandwich (brunch menu) to the mushroom flatbread and even some of the tacos I've ordered, I can't find one thing I ordered that I didn't like. The interior is quite spacious. 3 full bars, so I can imagine this spot was meant to get lit once people find out about it. Apparently there's a patio as well, so I'll have to come check that out in the summer. They do have happy hour that goes down on Fridays from 4pm-7pm featuring $4 drafts, 1/2 price select appetizers, and $5 craft cocktails. I'm with it. Save that money. I think the only thing that I'd have to note is that the service can be a bit spotty. Also during the few times we've visited the heater was cranked way to hot. This place was picked at random and it wasn't a mistakenly taken choice. The angry tots were so good, I'd go back just for those and some drinks! The tots were crispy and the brisket was cooked excellent, nothing overwhelmed anything else within the appetizer. Wings were decent, they were my girlfriends, per her words the Buffalo was better than the bbq. Went in for lunch with some friends today. I loved how big and spacious it was--lots of seating options for indoor and outdoor. We sat in a nice spacious booth which was great. They have some space outdoors too even if it it's raining that's covered The bottomless brunch (25$) - the champagne kept flowing , the waitress just kept bring us bottles to share and never stopped until we approached the end of our 2 hours. Came here right after outdoor dining was legal again and the place was busy. We waited 2 hours just to get a table on the patio on that weeknight. But that wasn't unexpected when people have been locked in their houses for months. We were eventually seated on the back patio, which has a lot of space and looks like a really cool environment, especially if it is at full capacity. Our waitress was new to the job (and might've been new to waiting entirely) and she told us that up front. It was definitely not great service, but not going to hold it against them or her, as we are pretty patient and could see she was stressed. For food, we got wings. Here's my take on the sauces we got: Garlic buffalo- 6.5/10 - nothing special, but solid Dry rub- 8/10 - very flavorful, sometimes dry rubs are tasteless Chili maple- 10/10 - so good, and unique. Can taste the maple for sure. Smoky Chipotle- 9/10 - very smoky, not too spicy, I'm a fan Also had a side of tots and Mac. The Mac and cheese (at least the side dish) was fine, but nothing special. I would absolutely recommend broken barrel! The atmosphere is so fun and staff are so helpful. The only drawback is that on weekends they don't serve their regular menu until 3:30. But I absolutely love their veggie naan wrap. It is so unique and delicious! The sweet potato fries are also killer and can come with three dipping sauces!! Drinks do not disappoint either. Honestly, I started off a little hesitant because the word "sprouted" completely turned my taste buds off. But there I was. With a steaming plate of nachos in front me.
