We lived in Broadway Manor for almost 12 yrs. No improvements were done to our unit while the rent kept getting raised. At 1 point our rent increase was over $200 a month. It is classified as a 'senior living' apartment but the rental rates are very expensive that seniors living on limited income cannot afford living there . Through the years, the demographics have changed. 12 yrs ago the residents were mostly single occupants because the rent was more affordable. But the last couple of years, rents have gone too high, only elderly couples with combined income or those over 55yr but still fully employed can afford the rent. The units are very tiny and some units have dilapidated cabinets with its veneers peeling off.
Our request to replace our broken oven and dishwasher took 10 months to replace. We were told that it has to be totally broken to be replaced. The oven wasn't working but the stove was. That meant we couldn't bake until the stove was also broken.
When we moved in 12 yrs ago, the carpet was not replaced. Extensive areas of water damage on the carpet emerged just a couple of weeks after we moved in. The window screens were torn. When we requested replacement for 1 of the screens, we had to pay for it.
The light switches were very sticky with nicotine because the former tenant who lived there for many years was a heavy smoker. We had to buy new light switch plates with our own money to replace them.
The windows have poor insulation for cold or noise. It gets very cold in the winter. Water seeps in through the frames, filling them with black mold through the cold months. Poor insulation also allowed a lot of the airport noises and street noises from the garbage trucks, street sweepers, cooking oil collecting truck, and traffic at McDonalds.
Bathroom faucets were filled with mold/algae. Windows were NEVER washed those 12 years that we lived there. When we brought up concerns about repairs needed, the previous manager's automatic response was 'it'll raise your rent!'
With its current manager, the general atmosphere improved a bit but repairs were not always possible because of the owner's reluctance to spend.
Given the size of the apartments, it is overly priced for what you get.
We tried to move to subsidized housing & got on the waitlist at several places for many years with no luck until recently. We have moved to a new building with competent, professional management. We're paying significantly a lot less rent for a totally upgraded apartment in every way. Adieu Broadway Manor. read more
