I remember…read morecoming out of seeing Return Of The Jedi pretending I was an ewok, excitedly leaving after watching Marty McFly in Back To The Future and being less than enamored with Flight Of The Navigator - well you get the picture. Then it fell into disrepair and became a place you dared your mates to break into during the late 1980s after school had finished. Now, The Rex (as all good cinemas should be called) has been restored to its former glory. When I say former, think 1930s Art Deco, plush red seating, original projector and art house matinées. The place is a treat and a MUST visit for any cineophile. Prices are reasonable (approx £7 at time of writing) but availability is tough. You need to quick on the phone as it seems every person in Berkhamsted is a paid up member. Before each performance (and they are performances!) you can relax in the lobby where there are books on film to paw over or head down stairs and grab yourself a beer or a glass of wine. It's that sort of place. Do make sure you get to your seat in time for the traditional, and I found informative, pre film introduction from the Manager, James. A proud, curious creature James embodies the character behind this most charming of movie houses.

We were in screen 12 and I was really impressed. The seats are big and comfortable and have LOADS of legroom. We sat in some that were the first row in the second tier up and central in the cinema. Not only was it the perfect angle to view the screen from it was completely unobscured too. There was also a handy metal railing in front that you could rest your feet on! The sound was good and loud, the screen clear and bright, the popcorn crunchy and sweet, and the whole place was pretty clean and well air conditioned. All that you could want from a cinema really.

Their public toilets are spacious and clean a surprise in a cinema that gets so busy. They also sell a variety of hot and cold snacks including nachos and ice cream, and something I recently noted was that they now sell coffee what a nice change from the usual water and fizzy drinks. The screens are a good size and the seats are fairly comfortable, and the walls are thick enough between screens that you cannot hear the film being played in the next screen.

Empire cinemas, Bishop's Stortford…read more I suppose this is much the same as any cineplex cinema complex in any town, with 6 or so screens showing a selection of the most popular films, family favourites and not a great deal else. This cinema was originally part of the Cineworld chain, but the monopolies commission ordered them to break the business up and Stortford's cinema was one of the ones that got thrown out. As a result, we sometimes miss out on some of the bigger chain's offers, such as the ability to use Nectar points, and other discounts. Popcorn and Cokes etc are the usual over-priced fare, but you can get some meal deals, and all in all it's fairly typical of the cineplex experience!

We went to see 500 Days of Summer (also excellent by the way!) and I gasped out loud as I walked into the Screen. It was HUGE! The screen was tremendous and there were approx a gazillion seats. Lovely, modern, clean, wonderful image quality, superb audio. Tremendous all around. I am not sure if it was due to the quality of the film or the superiority of the cinema design but despite the size it was a very intimate and personal experience. Sweet popcorn was great too. (Yes the cardboard style popcorn, whatever! Judge me :) ) I wish it was nearer London but as I often travel to Oxford I'll be making a stop here on my way past as often as I can. Due to being in the Eden shopping centre there are plenty of restaurants, shops & starbucks about too... ps. I had a hotdog!! I hadn't eaten for ages and the staff looked like they could do with some help meeting their sales targets. They were nice. Ok I had two but I don't recommend them cause I was too hungry to be a fair judge.

It also has cheap Tuesday tickets and an unlimited scheme when for £12 a month you can see as many films as you like. As it has 12 screens it shows a really good choice of films with lots of showings every day. The food is pricey as it is in all cinemas but no one forces us to buy it. Unfortunately you do have to pay to park but it is cheaper after 6pm.

Instead security were fed-up with the behaviour of the manager and asked us to complain to the company Vue and the shopping centre. CS gave me 2x free tickets (worth £5 given Meerkat 2-4-1) which ran out during Covid so never used and CS refused to re-send.

Probably my top choice for cinema movies…read more Vue cinema are overall really good. The seats are really comfy and the screen is really big. They also put some really good movies for watching. Somehow, they made commercials actually interesting and very good. The food is a bit expensive though, but I can't really complain. Overall, this is a non-surprisingly good cinema. Maybe one of the best.

The choice of films errs towards the Hollywood Blockbuster so you know what you are going to get. Few Tips - If you go on Orange Wednesdays you can get two tickets for the price of one. - If there is a queue when you arrive at the ticket office, go through and buy your tickets at the various food kiosks. They sell them too.
