I remember…read morecoming out of seeing Return Of The Jedi pretending I was an ewok, excitedly leaving after watching Marty McFly in Back To The Future and being less than enamored with Flight Of The Navigator - well you get the picture. Then it fell into disrepair and became a place you dared your mates to break into during the late 1980s after school had finished. Now, The Rex (as all good cinemas should be called) has been restored to its former glory. When I say former, think 1930s Art Deco, plush red seating, original projector and art house matinées. The place is a treat and a MUST visit for any cineophile. Prices are reasonable (approx £7 at time of writing) but availability is tough. You need to quick on the phone as it seems every person in Berkhamsted is a paid up member. Before each performance (and they are performances!) you can relax in the lobby where there are books on film to paw over or head down stairs and grab yourself a beer or a glass of wine. It's that sort of place. Do make sure you get to your seat in time for the traditional, and I found informative, pre film introduction from the Manager, James. A proud, curious creature James embodies the character behind this most charming of movie houses.

Now for the downside food and drink is so expensive so would recommend you take your own and not buy it there. The arcade is half empty and some of the machines weren't even turned on. When I was a kid the arcade in this cinema was full of different machines and used to be so busy. It seams it's more of just a seating area now where ppl wait for there films to start. Its a shame really because there's so much space in there.

This cinema was originally part of the Cineworld chain, but the monopolies commission ordered them to break the business up and Stortford's cinema was one of the ones that got thrown out. As a result, we sometimes miss out on some of the bigger chain's offers, such as the ability to use Nectar points, and other discounts. Popcorn and Cokes etc are the usual over-priced fare, but you can get some meal deals, and all in all it's fairly typical of the cineplex experience!

Somehow, they made commercials actually interesting and very good. The food is a bit expensive though, but I can't really complain. Overall, this is a non-surprisingly good cinema. The choice of films errs towards the Hollywood Blockbuster so you know what you are going to get. Few Tips - If you go on Orange Wednesdays you can get two tickets for the price of one. - If there is a queue when you arrive at the ticket office, go through and buy your tickets at the various food kiosks. We went to see 500 Days of Summer (also excellent by the way!) and I gasped out loud as I walked into the Screen. It was HUGE! The screen was tremendous and there were approx a gazillion seats. Lovely, modern, clean, wonderful image quality, superb audio. Tremendous all around. I am not sure if it was due to the quality of the film or the superiority of the cinema design but despite the size it was a very intimate and personal experience. Sweet popcorn was great too. (Yes the cardboard style popcorn, whatever! Judge me :) ) I wish it was nearer London but as I often travel to Oxford I'll be making a stop here on my way past as often as I can. Due to being in the Eden shopping centre there are plenty of restaurants, shops & starbucks about too... ps. I had a hotdog!! I hadn't eaten for ages and the staff looked like they could do with some help meeting their sales targets. They were nice. It also has cheap Tuesday tickets and an unlimited scheme when for £12 a month you can see as many films as you like. As it has 12 screens it shows a really good choice of films with lots of showings every day. The food is pricey as it is in all cinemas but no one forces us to buy it. Unfortunately you do have to pay to park but it is cheaper after 6pm.

The bad thing about this place is ALSO that it's a bit out of the way so it's not that easy to get to. Even though it's next to a leisure/sports centre it's not very well served by public transport (there's only 1 bus) so unless you drive it's difficult to just pop by after work, but they do have plenty of parking space if you do drive. It's a big enough multiplex from the odeon chain so you get a good selection of 2D & 3D movies. As with most other cinemas... avoid the snack/sweets/popcorn.
