Arts Picturehouse is a theatre that has a cafe/bar inside for eating too. Around the afternoon-ish time, this place was bustling with people and positive energy so we decided to come here to eat, and ditch the movies. My friend got a classic wrap with chips and I got the sirloin steak medium rare with a side salad. I was quite impressed by the menu options since I'd assumed they would keep it quite simple for pre-theatre meals, but I was mistaken. My steak wasn't stellar quality, but it was certainly good enough, and cooked to medium rare, just how I like it. I stole some of my friend's chips to sneak in some carbs lol. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again for the food, but certainly would for the vibe :) read more

The Arts Picture House is by far the best cinema in the Cambridgeshire vicinity; much like my beloved Cornerhouse in Manchester, it's a step up from the sticky floors and arcade filled lobby areas of your AMCs etc. Hidden away next to Wetherspoons, you could quite easily miss it - but keep an eye out. We're not talking about huge blockbusters here - it's more Indie films and the like, though the Lion King was showing when we visited on Easter Sunday. We were there to see Calvary (which is my film of 2014, so go and see it right now. This review will still be here when you get back!) My only gripe? God there's a lot of adverts. I'm sure there was more than your mainstream cinema, or at least it felt like there were, which isn't a great sign. However, there's a small cafe situated on the upper level here, where you can grab pre or post movie snacks or sandwiches, and is a great space for dissecting the film you've just seen! read more

Far and away the best cinema in Cambridge, this place occupies what were the old secondary (smaller) screens of a much older cinema; the cavernous main screen where I remember going to watch Basic Instinct as a 16 year old (naughty me), sat in the upper circle is now a Wetherspoons. Benefits from a large and loyal memebership, the latter allowing you discounts on all films/events and a number of free tickets, and association with the university, which means there is a broader slection of films screened than you will find elsewhere. Cool place to catch a flick if you are in the area.

Been here just once for a screening, and we arrived a little late, so seating options were limited. We were lucky enough to find four seats together, but right at the back in the corner. This meant that our view was at a bit of a funny angle and the sound didn't seem to hit us quite right. But the seats were big and super comfy, and I've never had so much leg room in all my life. So comfortable, in fact, that three out of four of us all admitted to nodding off during a quiet part of the film. A little surprised at the ticket prices. Was expecting them to be quite a bit cheaper than in London, where I live. And while they're not Central London prices, they're still more expensive than my local London cinemas. read more

I went here with some friends last night to see spinal tap, complete with a bag of popcorn and a beer that I could take in with me. It was a late-night showing (starting at 11 p.m.) and there weren't that many people there. It cost six quit for a ticket which I thought was a bit pricey, but the popcorn and beer were good value, and the staff were really friendly. It was such a nice atmosphere, refreshingly different from most cinema's. But as poncey as it sounds, it did kind of ruin the alternative feel of the place to find out that they do show a lot of mainstream stuff as well as the more quirky and individual films (the kind you find at the places like the watershed). The Picturehouse is an institution that saves Cambridge from resembling every other high street in England. Offering the best of Hollywood's latest flicks alongside foreign language films and cult classics, there is sure to be something on at this cinema that will delight at any time of year. The bar/cafe upstairs serves what bars and cafes serve and there are usually plenty of tables and chairs / sofas to accommodate those wishing to debate the intricacies and subliminal messages of Blade Runner. Best of all, this place allows its clientele to take in a glass of wine to screenings. Pure indulgence. read more

This is a lovely cinema. The tickets are more expensive than your standard cinema, but it's definitely worth it - seats are allocated which gives it more of a theatre atmosphere, and you can take a glass of wine in from the bar to the screening which is very civilised! The bar itself is also lovely, with plenty of space for a drink and chat before or after the screening. They also have specialist screenings of not the usual run of the mill blockbusters, but foreign films, art films, and live screenings of operas beamed in from New York! If you fancy a more luxurious cinema experience then this is definitely the place to go. read more

The Picture House offers cultural salvation to the movie-goers of Cambridge, who have to otherwise choose between the Cineworld and the Vue. 9 times out of 10, if I went to see a movie at the Picture House, even if I didn't know much about it beforehand, I would walk out saying it was a great film. They have lots of foreign and independent films, but also show a few blockbusters. Really nice cinema, good little bar inside too where you can get your drink and take it into the theatre with you. Also, they have a good membership program, and if you join, it makes going to the cinema an absolute deal. read more

The bar here is a nice place to be even if you're not seeing a film and seems a world away from the chain pubs on Regent St below. Reasonably priced drinks, a snack style menu, polished floorboards and a down-to-earth crowd. A good place to stop for a glass of wine on a cold afternoon. The Picturehouse is by far my favourite cinema in Cambridge. Smaller screens mean that it is less crowded, the bar is a great place to hang out even if not going to a film, and they sell both Ben'n'Jerry's ice cream, and Green and Black's. The cinema is licensed, meaning that drinks can be taken into performances. The film selection is eclectic, with occasional showings of classic films best appreciated on the big screen; recent examples being The Third Man and The Fallen Idol. Film seasons and talks are an interesting addition to the programme. read more

This is a great cinema located on Regent Street. It has two screens and shows fantastic arty films. It is the only place in Cambridge to see foreign films. It is a lovely alternative to big screen multiplexes. There is also a great cafe upstairs which sells great crepes amongst other things. Ignore any bad reviews about this place, it is awesome. This is the reason the corporate Odeon and Warner Brothers cinema complexes with poor seating, rip off popcorn and mass numbers will hopefully never completely control the cinema viewing market. Granted, the tickets are slightly more expensive but the still have offers on such as tight-arse Tuesday (my naming, not theres) and they accept Orange Wednesdays 2 for 1 deal so if you're hard up then go then. They have a good mix of mainstream and less mainstream films and i can't honestly say i've never seen a bad film there. Just pick something different that has a write up in the extremely helpful booklet that comes out ever month and dive in, it won't disappoint. Couple all that with higher backed comfy seats in the cinema and a bar where you can actually take your drinks into the screening. Yep that's right, alcoholic drinks in a cinema!! The only advice I would give would be to sit at the end of a row if you are going to take a beer in and have a weak bladder. A truly excellent experience - go read more

Contemporary and classic art house films shown in delightful setting with two screens. The cafe/ bar can be busy in the evenings but always welcoming with sofas, free newspapers and movie quiz on Wednesday nights. Altogether a much nicer experience than the corporate film chains although it is more expensive. Soft and alcoholic drinks can now be taken into the screenings with thankfully no popcorn or hotdogs on sale. The cafe is fairtrade and all the staff are lovely. Monday cinema tickets are £1 cheaper and Wednesdays host The Big Scream where parents and carers can take their babies to catch up on the latest films - clearly to be avoided unless you have your own but much raved about by Mums and Dads in the know - apparently you get free nappies. They also run short film courses which have been recommended and a membership scheme whereby you are are entitled to reductions and free tickets. read more

Definitely the best cinema in Cambridge. Great ambience, though the bar gets a bit crowded in the evenings. They make a huge effort to cater to niche audiences - Big Scream, autism-friendly screenings, film courses and a fantastic festival. Friendly staff, comfortable seats, good sight lines, drinks allowed, overall a lovely place to see a wide variety of films. Yes some are mainstream, but that says more about the economics of running a cinema than it does about the APH's programming policy.
