The person that referred me to British Tailors said, "Sam is the best." I've had 3 suits tailored by him and all I can say is "Sam really is the best." His work is exceptional. He takes the time to thoroughly go over the suit and discuss options. I've never had a suit fit me better. One of the suits Sam did for me was previously altered by another tailor. It looked like I was a kid wearing my dad's suit. Now...it looks like it was custom made for me. Sam is a great guy. He's friendly, accommodating, and professional. I was running late to pick up and he stayed open until I got there. The complaints mentioned here seem to be due to the fact he's a one man shop. Before moving to Nashville, I was a fur consultant at Saks 5th Ave for several years. I visited our alterations dept daily and learned what a true art tailoring is. It was pretty cool, like going to see my grandma every day. They were mostly older men and woman from Italy or Russia that had been doing this all their life. The skill and knowledge they displayed regarding their trade was humbling. I learned the difference between hemming a pair of Dockers and a $500 pair of Zanella or Zegna pants. If you're altering a $8,000 Chanel Suit or having St John rewoven, you only get ONE chance. Having said all that, Sam at British Tailors is THE Nashville version of Saks quality tailoring. Prices are reasonable and average. I've had Seven, Paper Denim, Rock & Republic and True Religion jeans hemmed and Sam replaces the original hem PERFECT exactly like they came. I havent bought any suits yet but I know he has a big celebrity client list he makes custom shirts and suits for. There are always a ton of bridesmaids and wedding people so Im guessing they're happy too. He is in the retail center on Carouthers that has Bodeli Sushi, Subway, Mineo's and First Tennessee Bank. 'British Tailors' is a nice tailoring shop located near the Cool Springs Mall in Franklin, TN. They are off of Mallory lane in the maze of strip malls that surround Cool Springs. The owner and head tailor of the shop is not British, but he certainly is a good tailor. They did a beautiful job on a wool winter jacket I had. I had just bought the jacket brand new at a store at the mall in Cool Springs. This was how I found out about the tailor; this store sends all their customers to 'British Tailors.' I asked the tailor to take in the seams to make the coat more fitted. It only took him a minute to pin the jacket to my liking, and that was it. I picked up the jacket about two weeks later and it fit like a glove, the seams were flawless, and the lining of the jacket was in tact. I was a little nervous about giving a brand new coat to a new tailor, but they did a great job. My only complaint was their time schedule. They are a very popular tailor, so if you need something very quickly it will cost you more. Otherwise if you can wait a week or two to get your piece back, then the price is pretty reasonable. The charge about what any other tailor charges, around $20 a seam. He seemed to size me up before he named his price, so don't be afraid to negotiate with him a little if you don't like his first price. British Tailors will do all kinds of tailoring, they do suits, dresses, luggage, and basically anything you can think of that can be sewn, they can do for you. Being somewhat of a Jean geek I decided to look on yelp.com to get recommendations in where to try to take some new jeans I purchased in Miami. I rear prior reviews and decided to give it a shot. What was needed? Three pairs of jeans hemmed properly (William Rast/True Religion) The price was about 10 bucks more than I paid for the hack job they did on my TR's and he was able to fix it. The finished product? The best hem work I've seen on a pair of jeans I've ever had. Most people seem to find the first place that says alterations outside the shop window and that is the wrong way to approach buying a quality service/product. I could get into a diatribe about consumer habits but I'll spare you. He does the type of work your grandparent's would have demanded back in the day and he holds his work to those standards. read more

Wow! Why even try to do business with them? Called multiple times though out the day. Went over to the location twice. Once at lunch the sign stated they would be back at noon. Then after work and still the door was locked. As I was walking away a gentleman came up and said he has been trying to pick up his clothes for weeks and they are always closed. I've yet to receive my dress back from being altered and I can already tell you, I will not be returning for Sam's services. I suppose the first thing that irked me was the price ($50.. I've had similar alterations done for $20) of a few rather simple alterations to be complete in about 3.5 weeks to a dress that was no more than $45. I suppose you get what you pay for, so I agreed. Yesterday, I went to pick up my dress on the date and time range that Sam and I had agreed on. To my surprise at 6:45 pm the store was closed with no lights on, even though business hours say that the store is opened until Mon-Fri until 7:30pm. Though I was annoyed, I figured I could take my lunch to pick up the dress the following day. I arrived today at 11:45 AM and found a sign that said he would return at 12:00PM. No big deal. I can definitely wait 15 minutes. However, he never showed up. I finally ended up leaving at 12:15 after wasting my entire lunch waiting for him to show up. I saw at least 5 people go up to the door during the time I sat in my car waiting. I plan to go again tonight after I get off work as the event I am needing this dress for is on Saturday and in a completely different city and state. This is definitely not what I expect from a business regardless of how my dress alterations turn out. read more

I needed a bridesmaid dress altered for a wedding in a month. Sam took my measurements, was very thorough, and promised to have it back a week before the wedding. Because of my work schedule, I couldn't pick it up on the day that he said it would be ready, so I went the day after but he was away at lunch. Not wanting to waste my time, I came back the next day, around 3:00 so that I wouldn't catch him at lunch. His store hours says he's "open" but no one is there and the lights are off. Puzzled, I left and came back the next day (the day of the wedding), praying to God that he would be there. I got there 20 minutes before he opened just waiting... and waiting... and waiting... and WAITING. 15 minutes past 10, half past 10. I checked the shops next door to ask if they had his cell phone number or some other number by which I could contact him, but no one knew. What they did tell me, however, is that he is known for not showing up on time. 5 minutes late, I understand, but an hour after your posted business hours?!?!?! I had had enough. I had to be in Thompson's Station and so I left without my dress. So I didn't have a proper bridesmaid dress for the wedding and instead had to wear a dress of my own that could come close enough to matching the theme. Needless to say, he caused a lot of panic and stress on a day that really doesn't need more panic and stress. I wish I could brag about his expertise, but I never got to wear my dress!!! Pros: Location is in the heart of Cool Springs, a short drive from my work. Sam is a character, something else I value. Most importantly, he's very good. I've never had complaints about the quality of work he does. Accommodates turnaround times for events. Cons: He's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Irregular hours. Sam is a one-man-show, and that can mean that his shop is closed for a week or two at a time or that he's not in the shop during posted hours. I only let this happen to me once and now I always call before I go over to save myself some headaches. read more

EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL - We needed a tailor to basically remake a coat. Not just a simple hem of the length or the sleeves, but major alterations. I searched YELP for tailors in the Nashville/Brentwood/Franklin area and there were very, very few with a 5-star rating. British Tailors had 5 stars, so I thought we would give them a try. To be honest, I really dreaded taking this coat. I was afraid it might look worse after the alterations than before, as it was at least two sizes too big. I have had things altered before that were not able to be worn afterwards because they looked so bad. The owner is awesome! He is so friendly and so funny. I know that alterations of this type can easily take up to two weeks, but we needed this coat within just a few days. He was extremely busy with prom dresses and weddings, but he stopped for us and had our coat finished in two days and it was PERFECT, ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! Making something new is easy; however, altering is much more difficult. A lot of times, alterations do not look professional; however, these alterations did--very much so. The seams on the inside of the coat were also neatly trimmed and finished, just like they were before being altered. If you only read one review, I hope it's this one. I took my son's athletic bag in for a zipper repair. In his defense, the zipper that needed repairing/replacing was on a curved piece of material - although I would have appreciated his honesty at the beginning about not being able to replace it. I tried dropping it off several times in June. He never seemed to be open. Finally got him before the 4th of July. Was told that b/c of the holiday that it would be mid-July before it was ready. No worries. We didn't need it until school started. Like before, finding him open was difficult and so it wasn't until early August that I got back in there. He didn't replace the zipper. He had only adjust some of the teeth so that the zipper could be pulled back. And he didn't repair well enough so that it could ever be used again. He charged me $45. Asked for all of it up front. And essentially returned the bag to me with only the zipper having been moved. I think honesty is important and I would have appreciated him declining the work instead of taking money that he frankly didn't earn. read more

Somewhat expensive and I feel like there isn't a set price list. It's almost as if he just makes them up (can't even read the receipt he writes me). With that said, the tailoring, as others have stated, is terrific. Sam also speaks good English so you won't have trouble communicating with him (which is often a problem when I bring my clothes to other tailors). read more

Kristin, we must have been waiting side by side unknowingly. I brought my son in 9/30 with 3 pr. of shorts to be taken in. Not a big job for a tailor. He was nice at first, although he said questionable things, and gave me a finish date of 10/19. He gave me a small illegible ticket, and I couldn't read the total, so I said how much is it? He said 8,000. Of course we laughed. So I really still didn't know, and I called after leaving. He said $24.50 ea plus tax, $80 and change. I felt like I was stuck, so I thought, another hard lesson learned here. I started going in on the 20th, and went in 4 times. There was a sign on the door one day back at 12. I waited, but he never showed up. I went in Monday the 27th, and he was there. He actually said he had not even started them because he was not sure I would be back. So I said yes, I wanted them, when can I get them? He said "what day do you want them?" Really? I said the end of the week. To me that's Friday. I went in today, Thursday, because this whole situation is hinke. He said no, his words, " I have not done anything for anybody." I'm sorry but that smells of going out of business, and I was just disgusted with his sloppy place, sloppy unprofessional attitude. I told him he obviously did not have time for me so I wanted the shorts back. He acted like I was being unreasonable, but gave them back. These 5 star reviews, I don't know. Cannot recommend his services. I dropped my wedding dress off in mid December for a March wedding. I was told late January/early February at the latest. Called in Jan and dress was not done. Owner experienced death in family and took two weeks off at beginning of February. I was told next late February, then March 1st and today March 6th. Brought in a rolling, under the seat, piece of luggage that was torn between the outer and inner pockets near the top handle. At first, Sam the owner, didn't think he would be able to repair it. I told him to at least give it a shot as it was useless for me the way it was. I told him I was not in any hurry. I was even able to get Sam to come down a little on the price. When I finally came in to pick it up many weeks later, I was amazed at the quality of his work. He even laughed and stated he surprised himself with this particular piece of handiwork. I only use this place because he is the only true tailor in the area, otherwise I would not fool with him at all. My husband and I have used him three times and every single time it has taken weeks to get what we need done and then when he finally does call you to pick your things up you have to wait longer because he is never in his shop. I have to call him to nail down when exactly he will be in during the day; even then I normally have to wait a few minutes after he said he would be there. I had him do alterations on my wedding dress and was told that it would be ready 4 days prior to my wedding day. When I went in to get it on the day that he told me it would be ready, I was told that it wouldn't be ready until the next day. The following day I got a phone call from him saying that it still wasn't ready. I WASN'T ABLE TO PICK UP MY DRESS UNTILL THE MORNING OF MY WEDDING!!!! If anyone knows of another tailor in the Coolsprings/Franklin area please comment on this to let me know so that I may never have to use this guy again! This guy does good work but makes you jump through hoops to get anything done, I WOULD NOT recommend him to anyone unless they didn't need their clothes for a few months and had the time to deal with his shenanigans. read more

This was the first and last time I will use British Tailors. I always read over company reviews before deciding on using them. When I read the reviews it seemed like this would be a great choice, however, I couldn't have been more wrong. I took my bridesmaid dress to him for several basic alterations. He took his time with pining and took care to make sure it would be correct, although he was over priced from other shops I left it with him due to his positive reviews. I explained to him the importance of having it done on time and the latest time that would work for me. He then set a date and time for me to pick up the dress, about 3 weeks later. I told him one last time as I left that I had to have it at that time and no later due to heading out of town for the wedding. I called the day of pick several times with no luck of reaching Sam. I left a couple of messages asking for a return phone call and nothing. I was a little worried when I headed to the shop after work to pick up the dress but thought he must of just been busy. I arrived at 6 pm and the shop was locked and closed up with no lights on. I then waited thinking he must of ran an errand seeing how the shops hours were until 7:30. After waiting for over an hour and watching several other customers attempt to retrieve items with out luck I called one last time and left another message. I was suppose to leave the next morning to drive out of town but could not leave with out my dress. I called several times in hope he would be in working, no luck and still no return phone call. I showed up at the shop at 10 am, two hours after I should of been on the road. The shop still had the closed sign up and lights out even though the store hours stated it was open. I looked in to find him working on a dress, my dress. I knocked on the door and he let me in, he then stated he needed more time to finish my dress. I told him that I was told by him that the dress would be ready to go the previous night and he was not there nor did he call to let me know there would be delays. He then looked at me and said stuff happens with no remorse. He then walked over to finish my dress, after waiting for about 20 minutes he gave me my dress. I asked for a discount as seeing how my schedule is delayed due to him. He at first refused and then stated that he did not believe me when I told him the wedding was the next day (Friday), he said that it was on Saturday and I had plenty of time still. I am sorry, last time I checked I was the one in the wedding not him and I do believe I know the correct date. He then offered me a gift certificate for my trouble, I asked for the amount to just be applied to the dress cost and he said he couldn't do that. He simply shrugged his shoulders and said it is what it is. I left with my dress, once I arrived and tried on the dress it was not properly altered. It was still too big and he never hemmed the bottom of the dress. I would never use this shop and will make sure I never recommend it to anyone who asks. read more
