What better place to support and sharing this is where I restock my tea from, this lovely family owned specialty shop! I have never been to England, but my friend, British is he, had let me try this elderflower cordial and when I tried it, I immediately became a fan and now I find myself shopping here at least once a month. Parking is somewhat limited. Shop is on a shopping strip shared with UPS store and optometrist. I've been fortunate to get parking on my visits. But you can park around in the Rice Village area and make a day of it to walk around and dine and shop. The place is cozy and it feels like you're in someone's home with all the collectibles, groceries, tea sets and decor. You can find everything from tea, trinkets, sweets and fine tea sets to Guinness and Manchester United collectibles. If you love Paddington, you'll find a nice selection of official Paddington items too. The staff is friendly, and helpful. Even though I have never been to England, the shop is reminiscent to what I've seen on tv and hopefully I get my self to experience it someday soon. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy the delights that British Isles provides me with. read more

What a delightful find! After watching the Royal Wedding of Harry and Meghan, I felt the need to get a few British-inspired treats. So, I did a quick Google search and found this place. Lucky for me, I went early and was greeted by two lovely ladies celebrating the nuptials too. The events were playing on a big screen tv and there were yummy finger sandwiches and lemon and elderberry cake for customers...FREE! I asked for what I wanted, a particular flavor of tea which they carried, and then took my time browsing around the store. It is filled with cut tea cups and accessories, jellies, cookies, smell goods, etc. I'll definitely be back for a little self indulgence in the future. read more

It is such a joy to walk the aisles of this store - it is filled to the brim with British goodies that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in town. I came in around the holidays, so the store was extra festive - it was so hard not to go crazy and buy all of the fun candies, teas, cookies, etc that I miss from my short stint overseas. I'm on the quest for "the perfect teapot." I actually go on the quest for a great many things (hence all of the lists), but presently it's teapots...and the perfect smelling perfume...and a vinyl pressing of a Sprawl album (I think I know who stole my cd!). It's not the journey really, it's the epiphanic end. The found missing puzzle piece. The "ta-da! I've been hiding here!" moment. Well, that's not entirely true as at the rate I was going, I would have ended up with a teapot made of Yixing clay in the shape of a dragon cradling an egg. More importantly, I would have been stuck drinking green tea for the rest of my teapot's life. Healthy and pretty, but monotonous. I mention all of this because my teapot quest led me to British Isles. It was in my back pocket all along, but I wanted to search a few places first. I needed to whet my palate as it were. I really love this shop. Teapots and settings, Crabtree & Evelyn (the Galleria location has gone bye-bye), a great selection of chutneys and curries, all the tea (bagged and loose) you could hope for, Liquorice Allsorts, Bay Rum, Peter Rabbit, and Paddington Bear. I usually head straight to the "grocery store" in back, but this time I wandered through the teapots first. All range from Brown Betty to Wedgwood, very simple to blindingly fussy. I think I have found my teapot, but the journey necessitates a few more stops. read more

Summary: Excellent selection of men's shaving products. Staff even comes with the slightly stuffy British attitude. I have recently taken up the art of shaving with a double-edge razor. After researching the ins and outs of what to use, it became apparent that the best products for a good shave are made in the UK by companies such as Truefitt & Hill, Geo. F. Trumper, and Taylor. British Isles carries all three brands in home and travel sizes. They offer a full line of skin care products from creams to balms and other face treatments. Their prices are less than what you'd pay online. The service is excellent. The first time I went in there I told them what I was up to and they gave me several samples of other products to try, which was cool. The staff is polite but not overly friendly. I sort of expect them to tell me my fly is open or something whenever I'm in there but that's ok. I'm sure they'd do it in a discreet British manner. read more

I LOVE THIS STORE! I used to go here all of the time when I lived in Houston & always go in when I am there for a visit. I load up on chocolates, crisps, scone mixes, chocolate puddings, biscuits, toffee & tea. The owners and employees are very helpful. I see complaints about the prices...can you imagine what it costs to send over the bulk of that food refrigerated from the UK? And yes, being a small company gives them little buying power. Plus, you are getting the convenience of getting everything your heart desires in one spot. You can get help picking the perfect gift & then they will gift wrap it while you wait! Best tea selection in Houston. My fiance was looking for straight up verbena tea, not verbena and something else, for months. I literarily stumbled on to it here. TWO AISLES OF TEA. The store is packed with stuff. Stuff and more stuff. You can spend an hour or two just browsing and you'll keep finding more stuff. Interesting stuff. Stuff you didn't know you needed. They have the full Cadbury line plus lots of other goodies, including every flavor of Aerobar. Downside? Not enough kitschy corgi stuff. Hello, Vicar! This little shop is a taste of fun and sophistication. Personally, I love the British / Anglican culture and as such I do enjoy their teas, their snacks, and their way of life. This store is a slice of heaven. I have been unable to find Polo mints anywhere but at British Isles (the Fiesta that once existed at Nasa Road 1 and the Gulf Freeway was the last place I found them) - and the Polo mints make Altoids look like amateur hour. Likewise, since I like to shave with an old fashioned straight razor and shaving soap (yes, you know, the old school stuff with the handle and long blade) - British Isles actually has the equipment I need. From razor sharpening pumice stones to leather strops to soaps and badger brushes for shaving soap application - British Isles has the manly stuff us guys need to look great and smell great. Their Taylors of Old Bond Street line of men's cologne, after shave, and soaps are worth the trip alone. Ladies, they have plenty of elegant perfumes going back to the old days when perfumes were made painstakingly well - be advised, whether you buy male or female grooming or care products, they will cost a pretty penny. Why? Because they are made the old fashioned way, and they don' t skimp on quality. Also at British Isles are the whimsical brick-a-brack of the Anglican culture - fine tea china, little British pride souvenirs, and the usual assortment of books on British culture. The food selection is phenomenal - having all the things one can love from the Queen's pantry, and I do a portion of my grocery shopping there. Woah, you can get crisps in Houston? I'm there! Okay, Jim and I actually wandered in to check out the men's shaving equipment, but in the process I discovered the raison d'etre (can I use French in the review of a Brit store? Hmmm) for this store's existence- the card selection. As in, greeting cards. Oh man, such gems they had. I knocked out my mom and dad's birthday at the same time, and got a weird one to randomly mail my sister (we have an ongoing contest). Oh, so they do have an impressive display of toiletries here as well, and tea, of course. The other important thing about this shop is the chocolate bars, which are generally better in the UK than they are in the US (if you don't believe me, try them. Good lord.) This place is filled with goodies I haven't had since I used to get occasional care packages of British goodies from a friend or two from "across the pond". I make a point of coming here a few times a year to buy random awesome stuff. After gathering an arm full of books and assorted other bits I rang up. While waiting for my mom to finish browsing I noticed that they forgot to ring up a mug I picked out. The lady asked if I would like her to ring it up. I said, "Naw, I don't really need it." But then she decided to GIVE it to me. She said it had been sitting on the shelf forever, and no one else would ever want it. I adore this place! My family and I are from England and my Mom had missed clotted cream, minced pies and British bacon... (have no idea what the difference is) but I took her to British Isles and she found so much stuff that she missed from back home. The selection of chocolates and teas are fantastic as well. The whole place has everything that you can ask for, my favorite being Paddington Bear :-) but the best part is the owner who is reminds me of John Cleese from Monty Python. They have a lot of BBC merchandise in stock, which makes perfect gifts for fans of Downton Abbey and Dr. Who. I've picked up many hostess gifts at this store. Professors/loved ones/co-workers can't say no to Cadbury chocolates, or a tin of imported tea. At Christmas they have a wide selection of "British" themed ornaments that are hand sewn; along with traditional English decorations.
