Instead of hating, try embracing the nugget of opportunity life just handed you: you're about to journey deep into the seedy heart of Allston where, with any luck, you'll get one of the most satisfyingly authentic tow yard experiences in Boston. So, I was on a third date at the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown with an outrageously cute/funny/smart girl. I parked my car in the Citizen's Bank parking lot after bank hours, thinking nobody would mind. Little did I know, my whole world was about to change for the better. Three hours later, I emerged from the diner to find that my car had vanished. The nearby no parking sign, which I had brazenly failed to heed, provided the name and phone number for BTR. Thankfully, my date had parked legally, and was able to drive us to BTR. This effectively EXTENDED a date that had gone really well, and gave us an unexpected and exciting experience over which to bond. Did BTR answer their phone any of the times I tried it? No. Did they provide an outgoing message with any information at all? No. Was the business marked from the outside, making it easy to find? No. Was it clear how to enter the building? No. Was it well lit? No! But all of this lends an authenticity to BTR that is both startling and pleasant. You WILL get to stand for many minutes in BTR's tiny, surreal customer holding area, taking in the carefully-crafted aesthetic of the establishment: the garish lighting, the crumpled tissue on the floor (as if strewn carelessly), the bulletproof glass window to separate customer from cashier. Service wasn't at all speedy and there seemed to be some confusion about how much I would have to pay. For a while, I wasn't sure I would be getting my car back at all! My date and I spent much time marveling at BTR's incredible logo (bald eagle with flames emanating from behind it). Thankfully, I didn't have enough cash on me to pay the fee, so my date and I enjoyed a romantic stroll to the nearby Walgreen's to visit the ATM. My only complaint about BTR is that they don't sell T-shirts and mugs featuring their amazing logo and catchy slogans like maybe, "I went to BTR, and all I got was my own car!" Although I feel in my heart that BTR is offering an authentic "sketchy tow yard" experience, some would argue that they're actually serving up a caricature of the genre intended to appeal to the base palates of local hipsters, whose insatiable appetite for irony could make "faux sketch" highly profitable. This was an extremely upsetting experience. The company actively patrols the neighborhood looking to tow vehicles, and it feels more predatory than protective of the community. As a college student, the situation felt especially overwhelming and financially stressful. What made it worse was the demand for cash-only payment to release the vehicle. Being put in a position where your car is essentially held until immediate cash is produced feels unfair and exploitative. On July 18th, 2024 I stopped by 7-Eleven at 509 Cambridge Street, Allston, MA 02134 to get cigarettes. I parked my car in their parking lot and went inside 7-Eleven to purchase cigarettes. It took another 5-6 min because it was a line at the registry. When I went outside my car was already gone, and no one knew or saw my 2015 Honda CR-V. I found my car at the Brighton Towing facility. When I paid and went to my car I found numerous damages/scratches on the passenger side's rear quoter and front bumper. Under MGL Ch. 266 §120D, for private property tows: The towing company must have written authorization from the property owner or someone in control (i.e., landlord). If they towed without that, it's unlawful. They must release the car immediately if you show up before it's towed away (with ID/proof of ownership). They must accept credit/debit cards and can't charge storage fees for the first 24 hours. If a towing company refuses to listen to the landlord -- that's fishy. They're legally not allowed to remove a car from private property unless the property owner approved it. I pay 250/month for my parking spot. My car got towed regardless. I had the landlord on the phone with Brighton Towing explaining that it was a misunderstanding, and they refused to return my car without charging me $170. If you refer to the legal code above, you see this is a blatant crime. Not only this, but they insist on cash only (who knows what kind of sketchy reasons why). If this is a legit fee and the company operates ethically you should provide customers with proof of receipt and the charge. My car was towed there unnecessarily after I parked in an abandoned Walgreens location that did not have any customers. After calling the Allston police I found out that my car was towed here. The man child at the desk told me that my almost $200 tow fee was cash only and I would have to come back with cash. Upon returning with cash he took my payment and then did not release my car and asked for my drivers license and did not give it back to me and waved it in front of me and said I was going to have to wait. He then berated two other women who were also waiting to retrieve their vehicle. He then waved my license in front of me again and put his hands out of his window as if he was going to grab me and said that "I should listen to him because I'm twice his age" then he handed me my license and receipt and lowered the chain fence but not low enough that I didn't have to drive over it and damage my tires. I don't know where to start with these guys and their atrocious business practices. I parked my car in a spot that was marked for customers only, visited the business that was attached to the lot, was gone for less than 15 minutes and came back to find my car had been towed. Upon retrieving my car, the Brighton Towing employee told me I could get a refund for the wrongful tow if I called back and spoke with Javier Marin. The following week I called three times and spoke with several different employees that told me Javier wasn't there and that he would be back at a different time. Eventually I gave up, which is probably what they wanted to happen all along. It was only after checking out the other reviews here that I learned behavior like this makes up the foundation of Brighton Towing. This tow company is run by an idiot who employees other idiots to drive his tow trucks and run the shop. These idiots are individuals who don't even know the difference between number 2012 and 2016, and don't even know which lots they are supposed to be patrolling and towing from. They are just quick to tow and the issue is on all levels - from the guy who drives the truck to the owner. This morning I went to get in my car and go to work when I was surprised to find me car missing. I called the tow company to inquire and was told my car was towed due to "trespassing" and being parked in a lot that was not authorized. The guy said I was parked on spot 35 at 2012 Comm and I let him know that was my parking lot that I was leasing from the property owner. The guy let me know that he was instructed to patrol the property and tow all cars without a sticker permit. He further told me I needed 150 dollars cash to retrieve my car as the "work has already been done" and I should take this up with the property manager to see if I could get reimbursed as this has happened to several people. I took an uber to the tow lot and this guy was rushing for me to pay my fee all while I was trying to reach my property manager. I told him I was not going to pay him and I was going to sort out this misunderstanding. He showed me a sticker and said I needed that on my car for it to not get towed. I finally managed to get in touch with my property manager who informed the guy that he has owned this lot for 25 years and he did not require a sticker and that this was his lot. This guy was adamant that this was not the instruction he got and said he needed to call his boss to confirm before releasing my car. He the proceeded to call his boss and they spoke in Spanish to clarify some information about the tow. At the end of the call, it was discovered that their tow company is authorized to patrol 2016 Comm parking lot, not 2012 Comm lot. He started to apologize profusely and stated they made a mistake and my car was not supposed to be towed. He tried to justify himself by saying the lots are confusing and then went on to say that the guy who did the actual tow was really new and in fact today was his first day on the job. On top of all this, I got an alert on my email from the city of Boston that my car had been towed. The listed address was 2016 Comm which is not what the dispatcher had said on the phone. I wasted an hour of my life dealing with these morons, was late to work, and needed to uber to the tow lot. What a bunch of fucking idiots. I wish these idiots would learn to read numbers. read more
