After living a few years in Las Vegas, I haven't had a chance to go skiing. I've been really wanted to go to Brian Head for a while. My friends were telling me that how the snow condition was much better than the one we have here in Vegas. Well, I've been to Mt. Charleston several times in the past, but most of the time, I was very disappointed with the icy and slushy snow condition on the slopes, short runs, long waits on lift chairs, and etc,.
For the past couple of weeks, I find myself day dreaming that I'm floating through the powdery snow and flying high through the fresh air. I'm dreaming about I'm standing on a very peak of high mountain looking down the amazing view of peaceful snow covered winter trees. With this peacefulness comes happiness like I have never known for long years of my life.
My first trip to Brian Head was in 2010 & I've been enjoy going there ever since. Usually, we go as a group of 3-4 who love riding ski or snowboard. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Vegas and you can plan a day trip without spending a night at a motel of a lodge nearby if you have a tight schedule. What we normally do is that all of us get up @4am, meet up on north side of town by I-15 N. We leave Vegas and driving to Cedar City, UT(first stop for a gas and Breakfast). From Cedar city to Brian Head Resort, it takes about 30-45min to get there. Me and my friends like to stop at Subway(in Cedar City) to get a foot long sandwich to share for our lunch break. Believe me, you will get very hungry and thirsty after going up and down on the mountain :) There is a good food menu at the Resort, but the price is little expensive. One time I was there, they were grilling some burgers and hot dogs right outside of patio. I've seen people ordering a great looking chili cheese fries and it looked yummy, haha. Or, there were some people bringing their lunch and sharing the foods at the cafeteria.
We always do from 10am-4pm(all day pass) and the price of lift ticket is $49. Last time when were there, we only paid $35 because of the high wind gusts. They had to close one of the popular lift chairs(#2 Giant Steps). But there are so many runs that you can still enjoy. I usually stay on the "Brian Head Peak" but since the #2 was closed, person who works there kindly suggested to us that we should go do some different runs on the other side of mountain & it is called, "Navajo Peak". He explained us that we don't have to drive to get there. There is a trail that we can go and get a short lift(#8 Alpen Glow) which will lead us to a short ski bridge path and it will be connected to "Navajo Peak (#1 Wild Flower)". We were all happy and explored our way to "Navajo Peak". It was a quiet a journey to get their because there were so much of a new snow fall everywhere. Finally, we made it and enjoyed SK/SB on "Ute(intermediate to more difficult slopes)"
if you are a beginner, I recommend you to stay on two runs("Desbah" & "Heavenly Daze"). If you are an expert, there are tons of fun runs that you will definitely enjoy...
There are variety of Terrains(Jumps & Rails: from easy to difficult).
Recently, we were there In the first week of March and the snow was incredibly soft!
The ski rental is about $40 for the all the equipments.
If you decide to ride till 4pm, leave Brian Head about 4:30pm., you will be in Vegas before 7pm.
It can be very chilly up on the high peak of the Mt, so it'll be a good idea to bring your ski mask & a pocket warmer just in case.
I've been to all the great Ski/SB resort like Park City, Deer Valley, Alta, Brighton, & Snowbird when I was a living in Salt Lake. And I know there are few more out there in Northern Utah, but in my opinion, Brian Head is very compatible to any of those places that I mentioned above.
I finally got all new gears for a great bargain this month(Winter Clearance Sale @REI). I'd get all excited and get the fire started again just looking at it & dreaming of going. I'm lucky I have a great friends to go with each season :). If someone asks me why I like skiing and going up to a cold mountain in a freezing weather? I'll reply to them, "Its much like sports car or motorcycle riding. Don't you get excited about speed?? I'm in total control, go anywhere I want, I feel the wind, and I finally see the beautiful natural wonders of the world!" read more
