The trainers at this gym are very observant, mindful and supportive. Members use apps to report our quality of sleep, mood, and soreness levels each day we train, so that the programs can be tailored to our capacity and motivation for that day. I appreciate that there are no mirrors and no music - just the sound of people working hard and getting stronger with occasional feedback from a trainer to ensure correct form. In just six weeks I have already noticed myself getting stronger and tackling more goals in my life outside fitness. Lifting weights is more meditative than I imagined; at SBWC it is practiced almost like a form of martial arts.

I read some reviews, checked out their website and thought OK, it's kind of scary to do this on my own, but I have to try. My class was relatively large (5-6 people at least), but I felt that Becca and Paulie (owners and coaches) were able to give us truly individualized attention. During class, you learn the proper form step by step and then get to practice. In addition to the baseline lifts, you learn accessory lifts, the best nutrition for getting and staying strong, and the culture/vibe of the gym. The intro class includes unlimited access to the gym, and they suggest you stick with the training sessions at first so that a staff coach is available to guide you. Both Becca and Paulie are incredibly kind and knowledgeable. They make everyone feel welcome, from the hugest, most swole dude in there to the smallest newbie (that would be me). I told and warned him I was in a very unwell physical condition and that's why I was seeking professional guidance, but he pushed me to the point where I was too fatigued to continue my workout and threw up. Still, I wanted to give it a shot because I was desperate to become healthier. But very shortly after I had to go to LA for work, and ended up staying here indefinitely. I am not sure when I will be coming back to New York. I asked Len if he would be willing to provide a refund given the circumstances, but he didn't even respond. I followed up asking for any response, even if it was going to be a no. I also called and emailed him, but he has completely ignored all my attempts to contact him. By the way, he never said that refunds are not allowed and that private training lessons expire after X months. I also never signed anything. I simply sent him money through Venmo because I trusted him and assumed business would be conducted in good faith. Even in the texts he agreed to a pause. You can call me naive or whatever, but I've never had issues with verbal agreements (which are legally binding) with past trainers. Lesson learned. I am posting this so no one else has to go through this and lose well over a thousand dollars. There is another review like this. After practicing Ashtanga yoga for 20 years with a series of injuries and repetitive movement patterns, I felt like I needed someone to help me to continue to be strong as I learned to move in a more intelligent way. Erica knows more than any one I have worked with about anatomy and movement and she's a hidden treasure working solo out of her sunny bright parlor floor. This is a boutique gym with a focus on personal training. I'm not a fitness buff -- I go to 5th Ave 1x / week to ensure I have at least one solid workout focused on strength training. The rest of the week I run, yoga, do workout classes or do strength training on my own with varying degrees of intensity/dedication. The trainers are experienced and high-quality, but above all this place provides a great place to work out in a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of community.
