This is a boutique gym with a focus on personal training. I'm not a fitness buff -- I go to 5th Ave 1x / week to ensure I have at least one solid workout focused on strength training. The rest of the week I run, yoga, do workout classes or do strength training on my own with varying degrees of intensity/dedication. The trainers are experienced and high-quality, but above all this place provides a great place to work out in a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of community.

I told and warned him I was in a very unwell physical condition and that's why I was seeking professional guidance, but he pushed me to the point where I was too fatigued to continue my workout and threw up. Still, I wanted to give it a shot because I was desperate to become healthier. But very shortly after I had to go to LA for work, and ended up staying here indefinitely. I am not sure when I will be coming back to New York. I asked Len if he would be willing to provide a refund given the circumstances, but he didn't even respond. I followed up asking for any response, even if it was going to be a no. I also called and emailed him, but he has completely ignored all my attempts to contact him. By the way, he never said that refunds are not allowed and that private training lessons expire after X months. I also never signed anything. I simply sent him money through Venmo because I trusted him and assumed business would be conducted in good faith. Even in the texts he agreed to a pause. You can call me naive or whatever, but I've never had issues with verbal agreements (which are legally binding) with past trainers. Lesson learned. I am posting this so no one else has to go through this and lose well over a thousand dollars. There is another review like this. Their classes are the perfect amount of time and use various tools for moves (kettlebells, trx, clubs and bodyweight), have minimal cardio and no more than 5-6 people in group size which allows for plenty of attention/form correction if needed. Classes are challenging but NEVER feel like torture, I always enjoy them which has not always been the case in other studios' classes. They change their programming up every 4 weeks and each program targets the full body. Since starting about 2.5 years ago, in addition to getting stronger in general, I've noticed that some irritating chronic issues in my body have gone away by strength training. I haven't felt the need to go to the chiropractor in a year, my posture is better and shoulder and hip irritation are gone. Clearly these issues were being caused by muscle weakness and I just didn't know it. I wasn't expecting these issues to clear up from strength training but am so grateful that they did! In addition, Steve the owner is truly a community minded guy. He's generous and kind and has created a great place (all of the coaches are wonderful). Can say I still recommend Speakeasy 10/10 two and a half years later!

At the moment I am only doing 30 min sessions and although they are quick, they are fast-paced and effective (i.e. I now have a butt!) Like a few other commenters, I supplement my training with other activities like walking/running, etc. I could probably benefit from class pass or something else, but at the moment my schedule is only really suited for a twice a week thing. That being said, if you're like me and can only do this training as your means of working out, you WILL still see great improvements. I also do love the solo sessions verse being around other people who are watching you sweat and grunt in weird positions...unless you're into that.

Thus, even though it's a boot camp and there are many good people that attend, you don't feel left out because Joanna will custom tailor the workout to your level.
