I was so happy when Bretts opened after the former hardware store farther down Main Street in Beacon closed a few years ago!

William Tell True Value Hardware - Feb. 2026 - who would think you'd find culinary tools here?!

Feb. 2026 - they may not have extra wide aisles and huge shopping carts…read more What they do have is a huge and varied inventory. Not just a "take it or leave it" feeling. It reminds me of an old-fashioned hardware store; where you didn't have to buy 100 nails, if you didn't need that many, Besides the expected tools and hardware, they also have gardening supplies, plant specific potting soils, and fertilizers. Charcoal and propane grills. Fireplace pellets, water softeners, and plenty of salt for the snow. They have a few toys for kids, and some culinary tools, the kind you'd expect in a place like Williams-Sonoma. The staff is available and will come over to offer assistance if needed. They also know what they're talking about. They're not glorified check out clerks. So you don't get some mumbo-jumbo answer because they don't know the answer! Someone mentioned that their prices seem high; they seem fairly reasonable to me. After I've found what I'm looking for; I enjoy wandering around the store just to see what's there. It's discovering novel items, or something you've been looking for, but couldn't find in the expected venues that's most enjoyable.

The salesperson I talked to wouldn't even look at it, or even ask another associate to look at it, and told me that I should find a Toro store to have it fixed. When I mentioned that I bought it there and that I was told to bring any item I had a problem with back to the store, the associate just shrugged his shoulders as if to say "so what." Later that day, I spoke to the store manager, Paul, who said that I could bring the weed trimmer in the following week and he'd be happy to exchange it for a new one. Paul even told me that the associate I talked to did not follow store policy and that's not how handle those situations are supposed to be handled at the store. When I went back to the store on the pre-arranged day, Paul brought out the owner of the store, Chris, who told me that I do have to take it to a Toro store and that he wouldn't exchange it as I was promised by the store manager. Why would I buy a product from Berger if they are just going to wash their hands of it when it malfunctions? If I buy a car from a dealership, that dealership deals with the problem car and tries to help the customer with the vehicle. I have bought a lot of stuff from Berger because I wanted to buy local. Now I'm going to tell everyone I know about this and urge them to go to Home Depot.
