I had the pleasure of spending a day with a dear friend in Beacon, and Brett's Hardware was our very first stop. We were instantly so impressed by the store, but even more impressed by Dee! Her warmth, kindness, and incredibly personable nature completely blew us away from the moment we met her.Dee went entirely out of her way to help us, providing the absolute highest depth of customer service. She shared invaluable local insights about Beacon, giving us great directions on how to navigate the town, catch the bus, and find the absolute best coffee spots. She was the very first person we met on our trip, leaving a lasting impression that beautifully set the tone for an absolutely wonderful day. This is a store I go out of my way to shop at. I don't know whether I can get certain things at a bigger store like Lowes or Home Depot for less expensive, but I honestly don't care -- the folks who work there are super nice and knowledgeable and take their time to help you find something. There's also always someone there to help me bring the heavy stuff to the car, and no one will accept a tip -- "happy to help" seems to be their tag line. They're also great about referring customers to other local businesses if they don't have something I'm looking for. A recent example was I was looking for a hori-hori (google it, it will change your life). They had some tools that looked similar and probably could've sort of done the trick -- but someone working there told me where I could find an actual one on Main Street. Found it, bought it -- and told the folks working there how I learned about them. Builds community and relationship as opposed to competition. Dig it. Fully stocked and friendly customer service, it's exciting to walk into a hardware store that has such a hometown atmosphere and appeal.

The people at Brett's have customer service down. I had about five minutes to pick up batteries and a light switch cover. As soon as I walked in, the nice lady behind the counter asked if she could help us find anything. I said, "Batteries, and a light switch cover." Without blinking, she told me which aisles, and where to find what I needed. As I was walking toward the front to pay, she was headed to the back and asked if I needed anything else. "Sandpaper?" She pointed directly in front of my face, and had the courtesy to not laugh at me. The nice check-out girl rang me up quickly, and I was out the door with two minutes to spare. To be clear, all the aisles are very nicely labeled, and the entire store is well-organized and stocked with anything you'd need hardware-wise (including propane, grills, tiki torches, plenty of plants...essentially anything you'd need for a lovely backyard BBQ except meat). So if you're not the type of person that needs their hand held like I do, you're going to be just fine. read more

I never thought a hardware store would become one of my favorite stores. I'm probably in here at least once a week, often looking for some random thing that they almost always have. The staff is super helpful and friendly and Bitsy (who I believe runs the place) has an almost savant knowledge of everything in the store, and anything related that you might have a question about or need a creative fix or solution to. read more

As good as a smaller-sized hometown hardware store can get. Friendly and responsive customer service, and a calm atmosphere. You will be asked if you need help upon entering the store, but if you want to be left alone to poke around the aisles aimlessly they'll let you be. They don't have many big ticket lumber/construction items, but they do have everything else you need for more everyday around the house projects. The robust home/kitchen section took me by surprise--a good place for random basics like dish drying racks or drain stoppers. Gardening section includes lots of soil selections, some lobster-based organic fertilizers from Maine that I'd like to try, nice basic terra cotta pots and watering cans in various sizes. (Few plants though). Paint selection is lovely, and I've found special paint colors there that I can't find at the big box stores. Often, they carry things in stock that a box store makes you order online (for example, gallons of Titebond III). For years, Beacon did not have a hardware store (RIP Nichols Hardware on Main Street). It's so nice to finally have a store open again, this time near the train station. Definitely a couple bucks more expensive than Home Depot or Lowe's but totally worth it to have a local hardware store to support. This place also has a KILLER candy selection, just like a proper old school hardware store. read more

I was so happy when Bretts opened after the former hardware store farther down Main Street in Beacon closed a few years ago! I was amazed to find how large the store is, and how extensive their inventory is! To top it off, the staff is very nice and helpful, it's near the Beacon train station, and next to a micro-brewery! Sure, you will pay more than the same item you MIGHT find at Home Depot or Wal-Mart, but do you want to spend the time and gas to go there, and miss out on helping a local business? read more

Brett's True Vale in Beacon is a very customer satisfaction driven business. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I recently purchased two bags of ice melt and they carried my purchase to my car for me. I've pretty much have given up on Home Depot and Lowes as Brett's has a large inventory. read more
