A chic restaurant/cafe with a good menu. The Mediterranean sando with halloumi cheese was yummy. A friend had the shakshuka which was also good. The Breakway burger is excellent. Placing the order at the counter & having food brought to your table is as far as their service goes. I didn't know this when I added a large tip for the very friendly staff. Water, cutlery, napkins, to-go boxes are all self-serve - as is bussing your own table! I was running to and fro during my lunch to refill my own small water cup etc, grab napkins. Cute little casual eatery right outside the Helms Bakery area. If you want a sit down meal but don't want to spend too much money, this is a good choice. Most of the restaurants inside the Helms Bakery area are slightly pricier than Breakway. I walked here on my lunch break, this place is a little expensive for the burger potatoes and coke that I got. The receipt said burger potatoes and coke however after walking back to my office I got a salad instead of potatoes. Cozy food spot across from the Helms Design District with amazing friendly staff and service! I ordered the breakfast sandwich along with a seasonal iced coffee--both were excellent. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the bacon was thick and substantial, and everything was tied together with a delicious aioli. My experience for lunch at this cafe was so so. We split 2 sandwiches, one was a pulled chicken with pesto on ciabatta; the other a turkey sandwich with alfalfa sprouts & avocado. For both sandwiches, the ciabatta bread was pretty flat, not crispy on the outside, and lacked flavor as well. Considering it's a $20 sandwich I expected a bit better. The pulled chicken was very very dry and then to compensate it was overly saturated in a mayo-y pesto. Not the best. The turkey sandwich was similarly bland. One thing I did really like was their side of crispy potatoes. They were super crisp on the outside and soft & fluffy inside. Perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Funny enough I think that was the star of the dish. You also have to bus your own dishes. Was not necessarily expecting that and especially considering 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees costs $50. This is a very cute cafe I stopped in to grab a coffee after yoga. I got a regular vanilla latte with almond milks it was $7.48 well worth it and delicious. Breakaway is an absolute all-timer for me and I've been coming here for years now. Speedy service, stamp card for drinks which is always a positive, happy homey vibes. Stopped by here on a weekday morning and the place was packed. I scored an outside table and was craving one of their amazing breakfast sandwiches. After ordering from the counter, I grabbed my table marker, some cutlery and water at the self-service station and planted myself on one of the half dozen outside seats on Washington overlooking Helms. Within 19 minutes, a nice young man brought out my order, a Breakfast Sammy with Mushrooms. One of the crowd favorites, this sando brought some serious taste bud satisfaction. Soft Scrambled Eggs, Aged Cheddar, Garlic Aioli, Mushrooms and a Brioche Bun. Simple but full of flavor. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and hot, blended with delicious cheddar and one of the best aiolis I have tried. The bun was slightly crispy on the outside and soft in the center, holding the ingredients firm with each bite. Pick up some extra napkins, you will need them as things can get a little wild and messy. Light and Bright indoor decor, complete with table and booth seating options and a well-kept gender-neutral bathroom for patrons. There is plenty of street parking on any of the several residential streets nearby. Breakaway Cafe is owned and operated by two dedicated brothers to serve up simple, delicious food and drinks with a casual and comfortable "elevated coffeehouse" flare. The Baseline: For a Breakfast Cafe they must have quality eggs (preparation/product), coffee must be good (roast quality/flavor), baked/pastry/bread products must be flavorful, reasonable wait/service time, and existence of uncommon combinations. Food: The food is excellent and exceeds the Baseline. My eggs were prepared over easy and had a silky, smooth cooked exterior and the yolks were the right amount of runny. The toast was properly crisp and properly soft on the inner bread, recommend the sourdough. I had the drip coffee which was flavorful and the beans used smelled/tasted properly roasted. I also had the shakshuka which is a little more common in LA but not everywhere so they had some uncommon offerings (also the breakfast burrito bread pudding and Muesli look interesting to try on future visits. Service: It did take a little longer for us to get seated on the day we came but that was a weekend around 10am. Once we ordered and were seated the service was excellent. My water glass was not empty and the staff were friendly. Ambiance: This is a nicely decorated cafe in the walkable section of Culver City across the street from Helms Bakery shopping area. You order at the counter and then pick your own seat - it's pretty busy on Saturdays but luckily a table was finishing up as we just got done ordering. I got the breakfast burrito and the vegan butternut squash soup. I LOVED the soup, it was very light, and honestly paired so nicely with my burrito (even though that wasn't necessarily the intention). The breakfast burrito had a perfect cheese pull and I was glad I opted to not add meat to it because that would've been a little too heavy for me. I thought the ambiance for the cafe was really nice. It wasn't too loud and there was nice music playing, but the music was the perfect volume to be able to still have a conversation. For my soup, burrito, and my boyfriend's burger (not pictured) + a drink, I spent a little over $44 (not including tip).
