Cute little casual eatery right outside the Helms Bakery area. If you want a sit down meal but don't want to spend too much money, this is a good choice. Most of the restaurants inside the Helms Bakery area are slightly pricier than Breakway. Small and cute dining room with semi self service - you order at the counter first and then you get your order when they call your number. We love their Shakshuka and Chicken sandwiches. Breakaway is an absolute all-timer for me and I've been coming here for years now. Speedy service, stamp card for drinks which is always a positive, happy homey vibes. Hot salted maple latte is fantastic and the breakfast burrito is my favorite in LA - the sauce they give is good but the red hot sauce on the table (not the cholula, can't remember what it's called) brings it to a whole new level. This is a very cute cafe I stopped in to grab a coffee after yoga. I got a regular vanilla latte with almond milks it was $7.48 well worth it and delicious. I get a free side, either potatoes or salad. I got the potatoes because the cashier said it was the most popular. Next time I'm gonna try the Shakauka. My experience for lunch at this cafe was so so. We split 2 sandwiches, one was a pulled chicken with pesto on ciabatta; the other a turkey sandwich with alfalfa sprouts & avocado. For both sandwiches, the ciabatta bread was pretty flat, not crispy on the outside, and lacked flavor as well. Considering it's a $20 sandwich I expected a bit better. The pulled chicken was very very dry and then to compensate it was overly saturated in a mayo-y pesto. Not the best. The turkey sandwich was similarly bland. One thing I did really like was their side of crispy potatoes. They were super crisp on the outside and soft & fluffy inside. Perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Funny enough I think that was the star of the dish. You also have to bus your own dishes. Was not necessarily expecting that and especially considering 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees costs $50. Stopped by here on a weekday morning and the place was packed. I scored an outside table and was craving one of their amazing breakfast sandwiches. After ordering from the counter, I grabbed my table marker, some cutlery and water at the self-service station and planted myself on one of the half dozen outside seats on Washington overlooking Helms. Within 19 minutes, a nice young man brought out my order, a Breakfast Sammy with Mushrooms. One of the crowd favorites, this sando brought some serious taste bud satisfaction. Soft Scrambled Eggs, Aged Cheddar, Garlic Aioli, Mushrooms and a Brioche Bun. Simple but full of flavor. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and hot, blended with delicious cheddar and one of the best aiolis I have tried. The bun was slightly crispy on the outside and soft in the center, holding the ingredients firm with each bite. Pick up some extra napkins, you will need them as things can get a little wild and messy. Light and Bright indoor decor, complete with table and booth seating options and a well-kept gender-neutral bathroom for patrons. There is plenty of street parking on any of the several residential streets nearby. Breakaway Cafe is owned and operated by two dedicated brothers to serve up simple, delicious food and drinks with a casual and comfortable "elevated coffeehouse" flare. On a rainy day in Culver City, meeting my producing partner and wanting to be close to home, we went here. Love the vibe and the waitstaff is lovely. It is dog friendly and there was a beautiful border collie lying next to me that was ready to get scratched and snuggled. The power of petting an animal, especially a dog is a healing and comforting experience! So sweet this boy Roger was!!! The food is delicious and really cheap for what you get! I had two eggs over easy potatoes, toast, and bacon for 15 bucks. We were there for 2 hours and we had our important meeting together, received a lot of dog love and had great repasts! Food: The food is excellent and exceeds the Baseline. My eggs were prepared over easy and had a silky, smooth cooked exterior and the yolks were the right amount of runny. The toast was properly crisp and properly soft on the inner bread, recommend the sourdough. I had the drip coffee which was flavorful and the beans used smelled/tasted properly roasted. I also had the shakshuka which is a little more common in LA but not everywhere so they had some uncommon offerings (also the breakfast burrito bread pudding and Muesli look interesting to try on future visits. Service: It did take a little longer for us to get seated on the day we came but that was a weekend around 10am. Once we ordered and were seated the service was excellent. My water glass was not empty and the staff were friendly. Ambiance: This is a nicely decorated cafe in the walkable section of Culver City across the street from Helms Bakery shopping area. You order at the counter and then pick your own seat - it's pretty busy on Saturdays but luckily a table was finishing up as we just got done ordering. I got the breakfast burrito and the vegan butternut squash soup. The breakfast burrito had a perfect cheese pull and I was glad I opted to not add meat to it because that would've been a little too heavy for me. I thought the ambiance for the cafe was really nice. It wasn't too loud and there was nice music playing, but the music was the perfect volume to be able to still have a conversation. i noticed this spot across the way while hanging out near helms plaza and decided to check it out today the service was friendly - you order and take your number to a desired table. inside is pleasantly decorated - it exudes the la hip - there's plenty of seating outside and maybe 4 tables outside - we sat outside to enjoy the sunshine today we got the sesame crunch salad and biscuit sausage sandwich. they also offered the bottle of hot sauce and tapatio the hot sauce in the squeeze bottle was so good - it has the tang but not too spicy - goes perfectly well with the sandwich the sandwich was delicious!! the sausage in it was soft and juicy, egg was perfectly cooked, and sufficiently cheesy biscuit was exceptional imo. dry but also soft and had enough lamination. the salad was good enough to where i wanted to go home and replicate it. the only thing i would request would be - go a bit easier on the dressing. next time i will ask the dressing on the side. i loved all the ingredients in the salad - there was dill, cilantro, napa cabbage (loved that it's not just regular cabbage), kale, shredded carrots, scallions, sesame seeds, cashews, and peanuts - it's a varied amount of things in there!! i will be back next time to try the brie croissant with jam - i was eyeing that for next time!!! also to note! breakfast is served all day here! woot read more

What a lovely gem of a spot in the Arts District of Culver City! I picked up a breakaway grains salad from the cafe and was pleasantly surprised at how large it is, so for the price the value is quite good as I can see myself eating this over at least 2 meals! The quality of the produce is fresh and the egg was perfectly cooked to 7 minute perfection. We stopped by this place for lunch during the Great LA Walk on November 23, 2024. We were starving by then, and Breakaway Cafe has many healthy options to satiate our appetite. Breakfast burrito is a thing here, but I ordered a bowl of salad and grains. The ingredients were fresh and tasted great. The portion was substantial, and it sustained me for the remaining 8 miles of the walk. It was not immediately obvious that we had to order at the counter, but the staff did bring the food out to us. This place was a Culver City gem. Can't believe I've never heard of it. It's a small industrial cafe with beachy vibes and a gender neutral restroom It's clean and has good service. Great meet up or solo space to enjoy their menu filled with a variety of breakfast items or their tasty beverages. It's pretty self serve and no table service so if you're looking to get catered to, this is not the spot for you. My tea and Sammy's breakfast sandwich cost a total of $22.88 so a bit on the pricey side. I did add avocado and mushrooms which was an up charge. They also refilled my tea with hot water for no extra charge and the tea was potent every time so it was definitely high quality tea packed with flavor. I'll definitely be back.
