One word: SOURDOUGH Sean and I can polish off one of Breadsmith's sourdough loaves in just a couple of days. If there's one thing I can't stand its a weak-tasting sourdough - one where you can just barely get that tangy flavor and you have to think real hard to convince yourself it's there. No such trouble with this stuff. The just-right tangy sourdough from this place is the real deal. Mostly we just toast it with butter for late evening snacks but I also use it for BLTs, hot ham and swiss sandwiches, etc. Excellent every time and reasonably priced. I do believe sourdough is a daily bread but I have been in once or twice when they haven't had it. I was quite sad on these occasions but the circumstance just allowed me to try one of their other flavors, all of which have been very good as well. They've got a whole monthly calendar you can take to tell you which specialty loaves are upcoming in the rotation. So many choices it's crazy! Service is always friendly - you choose whether you'd like your bread sliced for free or left as is and they've got a punch card loyalty program to earn you free loaves as well. The familiar door bell chimes as you enter and that smell hits you...heavenly. The friendly faces and abundance of fresh baked goods is always a welcome experience. You've got to try the monkey bread, cinnamon rolls, scones and coffee cake. Also, their country buttertop makes great sandwiches and the english muffin bread for toast. Redress is a few stores down and I'm occasionally there for work stuff. Rachel at Redress always gets us some tasty treats from Breadsmith when we have a photo shoot. Last week I had some cheese bread ( which was like the cool, older brother to stuff crust on pizza) and it was amazing! Also I devoured some cookies. Chocolate chip and something that looked like oatmeal without the raisins and had sugar on top. I inhaled them. Amazing. I have to keep away from this place and only visit on special occasions. I love a good artisan bakery. Located on a corner off Detroit Ave, Breadsmith offers free 15 minute parking on the street (by the meters). I sampled some of their bread offerings, all very good and went home with a baguette (which was not sampled). Sadly, the baguette was a little disappointing, really doughy and dense, more like Italian bread. For the price I could get a better baguette at Heinen's. I would come back, if only to try something else, but for now I could take it or leave it. read more

Holy Cinnamon Roll! I know I shouldn't have eaten you all by myself, but you were so DARN good! I just couldn't control myself. I popped into Breadsmith after church on Sunday because I was feeling the need for something sweet. I tried Blackbird Bakery first, because well, I like them I've been before, but alas, they were closed for their summer break. So I whipped out my trusty yelp ap and whoa nelly, someone posted a pic of a GORGEOUS looking cinnamon roll. I walked in and there were a few people in front of me. I was a bit confused as to whether I waited for someone to ask me if I needed help, like at a deli counter, or whether I should go to the register, pay and place my order. The workers, while friendly, seemed a bit harried, and I think for a new-comer this portion of the experience was unclear and un-organized. The cinnamon roll was SO delicious. Normally I'm wishing a cinnamon roll had more frosting because the inside is dull and too much boring bread...not at Breadsmith! I honestly wish there had been more of the inside of the bread. I love the whole thing and couldn't believe how amazing it was. I also purchased a brioche cinnamon loaf for home for making French toast. De-lish! Breadsmith offers a punch card too for those who purchase frequently. Be sure to get one when you go. The girl at the register was happy give me a few extra punches to et me started. Oh for the love of bread! I live really close by to Breadsmith so I find it odd that I just discovered this place recently after my co-worker raved about it. Now I don't think I'll go anywhere else. Each bread has a very distinct flavor with it's own characteristics. My favorite is the Tuscan Herb (just add some butter or have it by itself and you will immediately go to bread heaven) and the Sour Dough. They have a rewards card where they punch it for each loaf you buy. Then when it's filled, you get a free loaf (and it can be the most expensive one!). They also offer free samples. I bake bread. I not only enjoy the process but I am pleased with the resulting loaves. My self pride diminished the first time I entered Breadsmith. How can the baker take the same ingredients that I do and create so many variations? I cannot turn my white flour into Italian, French, or country. If you want very good bread and want a huge selection this is your store. At Easter I went to every eastern European bakery for the sweet egg bread that must sit on the holiday table. Every place was sold out. As a last resort I went to Breadsmith and there were large loaves of Babka. Surprisingly, that loaf surpassed most of my past choices. The baker is a craftsman who succeeds in recreating the best of world breads. This bread makes every sandwich special and becomes a costar at every meal. Only the small sub type loaves have disappointed me, but then I have not found one good sub loaf anywhere as of yet. My banh mis suffer for lack of proper bread. read more

This place is just a few blocks from my house and I stop by at least once a week. For pretty much the same price as bread from the grocery store, you can buy a tasty, fresh loaf of quality bread. There are a variety of types, but my favorites are the sourdough and Italian. Great for sandwiches! They also offer a bread card, where you get a free loaf after you have purchased a certain amount of their bread. If you live in Lakewood and haven't been here yet, I would recommend that you do so. read more

I used to really enjoy their product, however probably starting a year or so ago, like in about fall of 2013 I noticed that most of the breads started getting kind of a ashy taste, like maybe they aren't cleaning out their oven as often or as thoroughly as they should. I would love to buy their product again but the last few times have been to disappointing. I would love to maybe buy dough from them, especially the buttertop, definitely my favorite, if that was at all possible that would be stellar, that way I could even bake it free form, yum. I used to love this place until I dealt with some uppity older guy there. When I walked in on a Saturday (late morning) I asked if they had any French bread. The guy laughed/snorted and said very condescendingly, "You have to get here before 11am on a Saturday if you want French bread." Really? Well, I did get my French bread. Breadsmith is definitely a weekly stop for our household. Once we bought our first loaf, we never went back to grocery store bread. The bread is always fresh, the staff is always friendly, and there are always yummy samples. Our favorites are multigrain and english muffin (sundays only, but it sells out because it's so darn good!) Every time you buy bread you get a punch on your bread card. Once it is full you get a free loaf, which is pretty awesome. Definitely try the coffee cake and monkey bread (and it's even better if you warm it up in the oven for a minute!) Yum! read more

Went over this morning and got a large sourdough, orange cranberry desert bread and a cinnamon roll for the ride home. Young lady who waited on me asks me if I want it in a bag. Seemed a little irritated when I said I did. Then I get home and realize she did not give me a plastic bag to store my sourdough. I've been going in Breadsmith weekly for years and you ALWAYS get your bread in a paper bag WITH a plastic one for after you cut it. The bread is fantastic, it always is. Stopped at Breadsmith on 1-5-17 for fresh bread and a couple of sweet treats for a friend. This place makes very, very good products but I cannot give them 5 stars because their baked goods just can't quite make that extra leap into the arena of unforgettable and irresistible baked goods. I really enjoy all that is baked here but something I am unable to define prevents their product from just blowing me away, such as Blackbird's Baking Company's delights always do. I think I found my happy place. Presentation was gorgeous, a perfect little bakery with a very intimate feel. In addition to breads they have dipping oils and spreads for sale. I found right what I wanted quickly and the staff were quick to assist me. They even set me up with their punch card (purchase a dozen get one free) and gave me 3 punches to get me started as a newbie. The prices were fair, $3.50 for my baguette. The French baguette was perfectly moist with a crunchy crust, perfect for the bruchetta I made. It disappeared quickly! Everything looked delicious and it was hard not to buy more! This place is the #1 reason why I can't lose weight. Their breads are incredible. The Power Bread is my favorite. They don't feature it on their menu--it's only available every other Thursday. And the Tuscan Herb and Granola breads are amazing. They will let you sample all of the breads of the day. They also have a nice selection of jams and other delicious goodies so if you need a quick gift it's a great grab. And I am quickly racking up my 12 punches to get my free loaf of bread (and dare I say a larger size pair of pants...gulp). read more

I have had the pleasure of frequenting this establishment for 2-3 years now, and not once have they ever disappointed me, well, except when I don't get there in time to get my nut rolls for the weekend!! It seems to be more difficult to find good bread so I was over the moon when I discovered The Breadsmith. Every loaf has been delicious and freezes very well if need be. They are pricier than what you would pay at the grocery store bakery, but it is worth it for the quality. read more

I usually get a treat on my way home from Mullets and have tried the cookies, scones (yum), baguettes and other bread. Yum. Just the thought of the bakery makes me want to jump in the car and go there. Their prices are reasonable and won't break your bank. They are happy to let you have samples before you buy. Their vegan cookies are to die for...I'm not even vegan! Various breads, rolls, sweet breads, pies, and cookies are a delight. The best breads EVER!!! I love this place. They always have breads to sample and a great way of trying new items. The best scones. There is nothing about Breadsmith of Lakewood that I don't like. BTW: just tried their pizza dough and it is outstanding. This is a regular shopping stop for me. I like that you can call an order in. Nice people work there.
