We were in Copley, Ohio visiting my mother-in-law and I wanted to prepare a Hungarian meal for her and other family. I was looking for a bakery that makes Dobos Torte and came across Farkas Pastry Shop. Not only was the Dobos Torte DELICIOUS, it was a beautiful, fancier version of what my mother used to make for me growing up. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We also loved the poppyseed roll as well as the Tepertös Pogácsa. It was great talking with Mike while picking up my order. It was well worth the drive to Cleveland! After reading so many great reviews we had to stop in. Not over but two days in a row. We don't live here so we had to get our fix and enough to bring home. We ordered the Napoleon, Amaretto Square, the Gerbaud, and Apple Linzer. The Napoleon was a 10 out of 10. We are one in the car and went back for more. The texture was great. Flaky, creamy, delicious. The Amaretto Square. Was good as well. Not too sweet, beautifully made. The Amaretto flavor wasn't as good as some others I've had. Maybe it's the type of flavoring/Amaretto used. The Gerbaud was definitely a crunchier dessert. Again made beautifully and has great flavor. The Apple Linzer. Another hit. The filling and Crust were perfect. Wouldn't change a thing. Service was great. Obviously this place has been around for a very long time. They know what they are doing. Only thing I would say is that it needs a facelift. Maybe not for locals but coming from out of town the look doesn't make you want to come in. Nor does the way the pastries are show cased. It just all feels run down. Not a place I would ever visit or offer good from ordinarily if I hadn't read such great reviews before going. We all eat with our eyes first. read more

If you've never had a Napoleon, you must stop here first! Nothing will ever compare to it!

I can't speak highly enough about this unique gem in Cleveland! The exterior and interior are both exceptionally quaint and inviting. It's the type of familiar that entices you to sit in the window with a warm nut roll and a cup of coffee only to people watch for the next half hour. Owned and operated fully Hungarian and you can taste it in every bite. We enjoyed all of the delicious delicacies that we purchased here and to no surprise, our favorite is the Hungarian Dobos Torte! Absolutely phenomenal! The biggest take away from visiting here is that they are baking the goods right before your eyes, which they later place in the shelf. We actually left and came back for the nut roll because they were making and baking it during our visit. This can be seen from across the counter (& also in the photos). Also of note is that Hungarian pastries are unique and offer a new frontier to explore for any one with a sensible sweet tooth. You won't find donuts, cookies, or cupcakes here. The thing about Farkas is that the napoleons made by Mike and his team are consistently wonderful any time of year. I could eat a whole box of these myself, they are not too sweet, they are light, and the creme between the puff pastry and custard is just heavenly. The chocolate one is so chocolatey and delicious, too! In the fall, they even have a pumpkin variation. If you're looking for a new dessert to try, look no further. Farkas is what you want, I PROMISE! Try the amazing Raspberry/Hazelnut Linzer bar, Gerbeaud, and the nut roll which is fabulous alongside a coffee. I heard about this shop from my Dr. up in Buffalo, NY. I think they cater to restaurants and caterers. I was leaving Columbus, OH and gave a call to see if they were open and they said they were working but, they had 3 types of pastries available that day. Despite being "closed" they allowed my family and I to come in and get the pastries. Neopolean - heavenly!!! Light, airy and sweet are a few of the adjectives I'd use. However, I think the most amazing quality was that the pastry melted in your mouth. No dryness or coarseness whatsoever was to be detected. Two flavored lintzers were great as well. They have the BEST Napoleons. We have been going there for years, and my husband has been going for longer.

I can't possibly give enough stars! Before I even mention the napoleons (vanilla and chocolate)... let me mention the one person working on this past Sunday (Mike), was everyone's BEST ambassador! Super helpful and knowledgeable- gave us his favorites and answered all our questions patiently! The star of the day is the paprikash sauce on the shelf (I had to have it just because I wanted to see what jar of magic could cost $11). Came here in search of a napoleon to celebrate my moms birthday. Wasnt any parking in the area on a Sunday afternoon, however the lot for West side market is free for a bit and not a bad walk at all, so that's what I did. The shop was a lot different inside than expected- very vacant and low key. There was one other person in the shop when I was there, they were sitting eating at a small table. the pastries were all kind of in the side refrigerator- not really the most alluring display. I'm not really sure what else they had, I just asked for one Napoleon and then they had a pumpkin Napoleon so I decided to ask for that as well. the staff member that helped me promptly dumped it in powdered sugar- which was nice, however I kind of wish he would've asked because it was a little overkill in my opinion. in the future I will ask for no extra powdered sugar. the napoleons were great. not traditional in what i'm used to at all though. they do not have multiple layers of phyllo dough and custard they have one layer and then it's primarily whipped cream and then a very thin layer of custard and then another layer of puff pastry. so in my opinion it's not what I think of when I think of a classic Napoleon, i'm assuming this is the hungarian variation. but it was quite good! the pumpkin one was very subtle. I had their dobos torte at a Ritz Carlton event and had to find out where the cake came from! Lucky for me, one of the cake had a chocolate piece that said FARKAS on it :) Best and I came in today and tried their Napoleons, both the vanilla and chocolate. I found the chocolate Napoleon quite enjoyable, with a dense chocolate custard that was akin to rich and creamy pudding on the palate. Great with coffee :D read more

You guys! It finally happened! I was driving down West 25th Street... and BOOM. 1 of the 2 parking spots in front of Farkas was open! So naturally, i'm not insane, so I pulled a U-turn and snatched the parking spot. The only thing that's ever prevented me from stopping in previously was the parking situation. I either never seem to have quarters for a surrounding street spot or just can't find one. The bakery itself only has two (I believe) 30-minute spots right out front. Farkas is a cute bakery and way bigger than you think on the inside. I only saw 2 small bistro-like tables, which leads me to think this is more of a grab-and-go bakery. I approached the counter, and once again, my super German-ness shone through, because it was painful as I tried to pronounce the Hungarian pastries in the case. They don't have an explanatory menu, but the younger, tattooed gentleman who helped me literally walked me through every single pastry. Bless his heart. I ordered a nut roll ($8.00) and a chocolate Napoleon ($3.50) -- both were divine. I really think the nut roll was the best i've ever had in Cleveland. It wasn't dry and cardboard-y, but rather rich, a decadent nut flavor and super soft (even when eaten days later). I believe there was also some fruit in it, this gave it a different consistency. The Napoleon was also excellent-- can't go wrong with their signature pastry that's "kept them in business for 45+ years," as the gentleman explained to me (a layered combo of sugar, chocolate, creme, and other things i'm probably failing to mention). Overall, I don't think there's anything bad you can get here. What a great place. I'll be back! read more

I stopped by this little pastry shop last Sunday when I was near west side market. It was my first time there and the owner was really friendly and recommended me their vanilla flavor napoleon. He said I would not be disappointed and he was right! It was excellent, the puff pastry was flakey, the pastry cream is tasty and the cream layer was rich but not overly heavy. Had a chance to stop by Farkas with some friends from out of town. Perfect reason! This store has been in my neighborhood forever and I've been so excited to try them out. We found out about Farkas when my hubs was searching for a dessert to bring to a potluck celebration. He wandered inside this small bakery and got a whole sheet for our gathering. They were super good. The first thing he said about the Farkas guys is that they were really friendly and helpful. I had the same experience when we stopped by yesterday-they are really laid back and down to earth. We got a few napoleons ($3) to share. They are huge! Do not be fooled by the pictures. Napoleons are basically layered desserts with a light crispy dough covered in powdered sugar. Custard and cream are layered in. So refreshing with the right amount of sweetness. Their other desserts look pretty good too. The store itself is pretty homely-just a few small tables. Really...tasty....Napoleons. For around four bucks, it's a steal and very easy for me to eat two. Thank goodness I had friends who were willing to share it with me. This is one of my pleasant surprises of my trip to Cleveland. My boyfriend and I were just walking around the city after going to the west side market trying to kill time and all of the sudden we smelled this wonderful bakery scent wafting through the streets. We literally followed our noses to Farkas Pastry Shop because when something smells that wonderful you have to go inside. Since we didn't plan to go here, we had no clue what to order or expect. We went to the counter and said what smells so great and they said everything of course. So we asked them to give us the best most traditional pastry they served which happened to be a vanilla Napoleon. This dessert was so flaky, creamy, and not overly sweet. Quite possibly the best bakery in Cleveland. As a home baker, you can imagine that I am Uber picky with my buttery and sugar filled confections. Known for their signature Napoleons, Farkas has many tasty treats baked fresh each day. You have to try a mocha cup! Also, this time of year they put an autumn spin on the Napoleon with the Pumpoleon--which has a layer of creamy pumpkin moose wedged between layers of sweet flakey pastry! Yum! I went to this pastry shop 3 times. In one day. Within a span of 3 hours. That should sum up my feelings about this place. Absolutely delicious, quaint, and reasonably priced bakery. I am a sucker for anything with custard, so, on my first visit, I ordered one napoleon thinking it would be enough to share with my mom. They say sharing is caring, but, upon the first bite, I just wanted the whole thing to myself. So so yummy. The bakery uses real whipped cream (which gets many points in my book) accented with the floral savoriness of good quality vanilla extract. The custard was the perfect texture and the flakiness of the puff pastry was spot-on. All of the components eaten together was perfection. I also tried the lemon tart, raspberry hazelnut tart, and apple tart. All were very good, but I would definitely recommend getting the lemon tart. I also hear the chocolate version of the napoleon is delicious, but it was sold out by the time I got there. What I also love about this store is the very friendly service. From the complimentary coffee to the warm smiles that greet you upon entering the store, the people who work there are passionate and care deeply about what they do in giving you the best experience possible. This place was sadder than I had hoped. I don't even know what I had hoped for but something a bit better than this. Honestly, don't they care that it looks like a bunch of drunken moving men got ahold of it? It's just looks sad, sad and empty. It felt like I was walking into a deserted house to buy food. Of course phenomenal pastries would be reason enough to forgive all of this but they didn't have much selection at all; so I tried a twisted wafer crisp pastry thing. I could have fallen asleep while I was eating it; it wasn't at all unpleasant but just fairly bland. It did have a nice flakiness at least. As a Hungarian I was excited to find this pastry shop. The desserts are good, while they are not as authentic as you may have in a cafe in Budapest or in the kitchen of a Hungarian granny they are good. I've tried the biscuits several times (just to give them a chance) and they are always too dry and flavorless, the dobos torte is tasty but the topping is frosting not the traditional carmely/candy hard top, the layers on their Gerbeaud are significantly thicker than the traditional desert, the Napoleons are absolutely delicious. My son works at a nearby pizza shop and one evening when I went to see him he says "I have something for you to try" them brings me this delicious chocolate napoleon...so freaking good! I asked where it was from and he stated it was from Farkas Pastry Shop. I had passed this spot up a few times but always looked closed (this was before I had the yelp app). Anywho, I finally got around to going there with hubby on Sunday after a visit to the west side market. You can smell the baked goodness before you walk in the door. I will say the selection is not immense but what they offer is delicious. I had the napoleon again, hubby had the pineapple linzer and it was so doggone good. I stopped again on Wednesday during a work break and got the lemon square (and the napolean--how could I not???). That lemon square was awesome. Some bakeries smell so good but when you taste the pastry is more like meh or blah...even like an old taste but not here! Everything I've tasted thus far has been fresh, buttery and delicious!
