Whenever I want to be transported to a makeshift European bakery, then I come to Breadsmith. Mind you, I've never been to Europe but that's beside the point, haha. The breads at Breadsmith are fresh and made daily. I don't come here often but I should. I love walking inside to the delightful smell of fresh breads. I first tried one of their breads, the Rustic Italian bread in January 2019 when I bought it from Nature's Oasis in Lakewood, a little cafe and convenience store (see video and picture below). I finally visited Breadsmith in October 2021 and I've been back a few times in 2024. I've bought their white Country Buttertop Bread ($6.75) which can be bought sliced or un-sliced. I've also had their Honey Wheat (I believe that's the name). Both tasted so fresh and good. After 3 days, their breads will start to taste stale because they are made without preservatives. Next time, I'll ask if I can get a smaller loaf of bread instead of such a large loaf because I can't finish a whole loaf by the 3rd day. They also sell muffins, cinnamon rolls, honey, etc. I haven't bought any of those but I've had their pepperoni roll before which was just fine and slightly expensive. I wish they sold croissants. Come here for the bread and stay for the friendly customer service. I'll definitely be back. The cost of all their breads are reasonable. TIP -- They offer a customer loyalty punch card. The French peasant is great, so is the Butter Top. Sourdough is good. Didn't like the baguette. Muffins & cookies are good. Pepperoni bread is terrible, terrible you do not want to buy that. I take it so you don't have too ! Think of your family. Monkey bread , color me primate. It's good. The batards are good. Great for sandwiches. With or without seasame seeds. Not a fan of the cinnamon buns, but the cinnamon claws I like. They also have a punch card for a free loave after 10 or 12 purchases. I forgot which. Parking is a drag. The raisin cinnamon walnut loaf was well made, plenty of raisins and walnuts throughout. Very pricy, pictured is the small loaf, $5.50! A full sized loaf is $9.75! The vegan pumpkin cookie was not very sweet but had good pumpkin flavor. The cinnamon claw was only 95 cents but also had the same dry stale plain bread underneath cloying white frosting that you get at Pizza Hut only it didn't even have all the cinnamon sugar all over it. The vegan chocolate chip cookie was entirely unremarkable. I bought a $6.95 loaf of their softest bread per the employee helping me along with a $12.95 (!!!) bottle of dipping oil. Amazing little bakery in Lakewood! They have street parking that is free & is within walking distance of a lot of other Lakewood staples. They have a wide selection of breads, muffins and bakery. I noticed they also offer other Cleveland goodies such as hot sauce, granola and bags of coffee. Nothing beats the smell of fresh bread. Considering how many types of bread this place bakes, it's fantastic. I popped in to get a loaf of sourdough and walked out with that plus their Asiago Baguette. I will say $6.50 for the baguette seems expensive but it was good and I'm never in the area so why not. They have some breads that they sell on specific days so check out their website for the monthly menu. After living in France for a year, I developed a taste for fresh baguettes. I tried a lot of different baguettes around Cleveland trying to find one that was comparable to a French bakery. Most fell very short. The closest one I can find is the baguette here from Breadsmith. To be fair, in order to be a perfect match, the crust should be thinner and more delicate. That said, this one is still really good and still the most authentic one I've been able to find in this area. read more

Although I love this place and have been a customer for nearly 2 decades, they dropped the ball on my Thanksgiving. A week prior to Thanksgiving, I ordered nearly $100 worth of rolls/bread for our large holiday dinner. The day before Thanksgiving (when my order was scheduled for pickup), they called me and said they had a "system error" and my order was cancelled. They refunded my money, and completely left me scrambling for rolls/bread right before Thanksgiving. They didn't even offer to give me a partial order, nor were they interested in making things right. It is so unfortunate as my family and I are huge fans of this small business, but they really tarnished our views of them after this incident. First time in and it was difficult picking out only a few items to take home because there were sooo many options! The multigrain bread was perfect, crusty on the outside and thick and pillowy inside. The cookies and monkey bread satisfied my sweet tooth for the weekend. Look at the ingredients label of any bread from a store, even from an in-store bakery. Fifteen? Twenty? Why? Because it's mass produced for longer shelf life. And it's not that good! Breadsmith doesn't do it that way and they offer a really incredible range of handmade breads that contain only the very basic ingredients necessary to make bread, just like my mom actually did back in the 60's (yes, I'm a Boomer, don't hate me kids). I particularly like the Sourdough, French Peasant, and Traditional Rye. They also have daily specials but, alas, they typically sell out fairly quickly so you should try to get there early if you don't want to miss out as I usually do. I also has a vegan oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookie...I honestly couldn't tell the difference, it tasted like the real thing! But the banging part of this visit was the hot sauce and spicy salsa. That hot sauce was flavorful spicy and just right amount of zest! The woman who helped us wasn't very friendly and almost acted annoyed that we didn't know what we wanted as soon as we walked in the shop (it was our first time there). We ordered a loaf of sourdough bread, a pepperoni roll and a sugar cookie. The bread was delicious. The pepperoni roll was good but would have been better heated up, which they did not offer to do. The sugar cookie was awful. I've had better from big-chain grocery store bakeries... it was flavorless except for the icing, which tasted sour. Visiting the folks back in Lakewood and mama says: "We need bread." "Where should I go?" the good son replies. Mama again: "That place on Detroit..." I have been looking for Brioche bread to make French Toast with for a while. What I've noticed is that since COVID-19, it has been hard to find. A friend of mine told me about a bakery near her house that she goes to that might have it. I got up early on Saturday to meet here there which included a 30 minute drive. When I got there, there was a line because they o ly allow 5 people in at a time which I'm ok with. Once we got in (only took about 5 minutes), the smell of bread smacked me in the face. It was glorious! I'm not a big bread eater bit this was amazing! I asked the nice lady behind the counter standing in front of the many, many types of bread for Brioche and she said they stopped making it on Saturdays! Queue in my despair. She then said there were other breads that might even be better for French Toast than that. Queue in my mouth drop. She showed me the Challah bread and I loved the way it looked. The color was amazing. So I got that (I love tjat they sliced it right there for me) and some cinnamon rolls and was on my way. I absolutely LOVE the zucchini walnut bread!! The only downside is that they carry it so rarely that I don't get it as often as I would like to... I tried freezing a loaf so I could have some when I wanted it later - the frozen loaf didn't taste as good as the fresh ones. I looked high and low for some Challah Bread so i can make my famous apple stuffed french toast. I literally looked in every single grocer, small shop,bakery, every recommendation i could find and I finally typed in "challah bread cleveland" and Breadsmith came up. It had never come up before so i assumed it was new, but my dumb self had my geo location still in NY so that was why HAHA. Anyway to my review, I called in panic to see if they actually sold challah, the lady over the phone was super nice. She said they did, and I begged her to hold one to the side for me since I didn't get off work for a while. Its located on the corner of detroit in lakewood, right by the rocky river border. A small little bread shop. When you enter you are engaged with the smell of fresh baked breads and muffins of sorts. Its impeccably clean inside, not one sign of filth i was like WOW. The staff were super nice and friendly, got my bread, sliced it perfectly for me, bagged it, rang me up, even explained their rewards program to me and signed me right up because i will for sure be back. On my way out i noticed they also sold an assortment of baked goods like cookies and pastries, also home made jam and spreads for your bread. I was literally in awe. The lovely gentleman on the phone happily took our order and name + number. Reached the shop at 4:02pm due to rain and traffic build up which delayed the commute and they refused to open the door let alone serve us. Lights were still on and staff still inside the shop. Such a disappointment for a place I would drive 30mins to buy from - Not again. I was listening to WKSU on my way to Lakewood on a Friday afternoon, when I heard a clip about this place. They were describing the breadmaking process, and some of the breads they served. Naturally, being the bread lover that I am, in my head I was asking- "where is this wonderful place, and why haven't I heard of it before??" When they mentioned the place was in Lakewood, I put the address in my GPS faster than you can say French Baguette and sped over. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by the smell of sweet sweet carbohydrates, and my heart warmed with joy. This place has EVERY bread you could ever imagine. Baguettes, rolls, old world loaves, Italian, dessert breads, cinnamon rolls, nut rolls. Ohhhhhh man, I'm drooling just thinking about it. They have a rotation in which they cook some of the more common breads every day, and some of their specialty ones on a more sporadic schedule. Fortunately, they have copies of their schedule in house, so you can grab one to put on your fridge as a reference. They also have ingredient lists for all of their breads, and some FAQs about their bakery. I ended up choosing some rolls to use as hamburger buns, a loaf of Rustic Italian, and a mini loaf of Banana walnut. One thing I really appreciate about this place is that they offer a lot of their regular and dessert breads in smaller or 1/2 sizes, which is great for people like myself that can't finish a whole loaf in a week, especially since none of their breads have any preservatives, so naturally they won't last as long as your standard Wonder bread. They recommend freezing your bread if you need it for later, then sticking it back in the oven to crisp back up when you need it. I have been back twice in a week since the first time I visited, I get really excited by the fact that no matter how many times I come back, there are always new breads to try out. Their customer service is also FANTASTIC. The girls working there were clearly passionate about what they do, and eager to tell me about some of the breads they offer. They also have a punch card, kind of like those gas station coffee cards- purchase 11 loaves get the 12th free or something like that. (Not that I needed the incentive to come back, but it's a nice perk!). My only complaint about this place- and it's a small complaint- is that they only have one setting for their bread slicer. Some breads I prefer to be sliced a little thicker, but whatever, I can deal. I just slice those breads at home. Suffice it to say, I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who is a bread lover, or prioritizes using more natural/ chemical free foods. My wife came home with a 1/2 loaf of dill bread from our close friends. The bread was incredible. I just stopped in and tasted the beer bread and the vanilla egg bread. I can't believe this weekend was the first time I visited this place. I have been missing out! This place is small but packs a punch with the freshness of their bread. It's made daily and if you visit their website you can see what breads are offered on that particular day. When I stopped in they had a about 4 different breads that you could request to sample.
