Four men flicked flour in the front glass nook, they slapped and flipped molded dough as if Escoffier trained to produce the perfect product, time and time again. They smiled and I smiled back adding a mid chest wave. This bakery is great for anyone who likes burnt bread. I ordered a levain loaf, and when I got home and opened the bag and saw it was burnt, I called Bread Furst for a refund. When I told the woman I spoke with that my bread was burnt and black, she said "the top is supposed to be black, the owner wants a certain level of caramelization and it should look burnt". What! So apparently this is on purpose. For me this is inedible and isn't worth 50 cents let alone $9! I didn't want to walk 20 mins back in 90° heat to show them in person, so they would not offer me a refund (even though I offered to send the photo). read more

Support local business! We stopped here for breakfast twice during our stay in DC. This is mainly a bakery for TO GO orders ,coffees and breakfast or sandwiches . It is also a casual place to sit down after you pay and pick up your coffee/tea and food to watch the passersby on Connecticut Ave. One stands in line to place an order at the counter. Then you walk to another area of the counter to pay. The staff work well together. They are efficient and patient for a newbie like me. I ordered the Lox Bagel breakfast sandwich. My husband ordered the almond croissant. My Lox Bagel was so yummy!!! My bagel is made to order, so it took a few minutes. If you don't have time, just select one of the pastry items in the case with your coffee. The following morning we knew the "routine". We both ordered "drip" coffee and selected pastries and we found a table outside and soaked in the morning sun while we ate. This was the way to go for fast service. We wanted to order the Le Jambon sandwich to go for lunch later ( as we were going to check out the museums), but the LUNCH items are not sold until 11am. Our coffees were served in paper cups, even though we sat out front to sip and eat our breakfast. They might have " china" plates and cups, but we didn't see any other patrons with them . I am a big fan of this place. I love a traditional French jambon fromage sandwich (ham and Swiss with butter a a taste of mustard on baguette), and theirs satisfies me every time. They bake all bread and pasty items fresh in-house. This does mean they are sometimes out of something I want (including the ham & cheese.) But even then they are often busy making more, and if I wait a few minutes I can have it. Today I wasn't hungry enough for the sandwich, which is easily large enough for two people to share, so I tried a beef empanada instead. It was excellent. There is typically an array of pastry and cookie items, some of which change daily. Get there before lunchtime if you want the most options, but the case is never empty. You do need to keep in mind this is not a chain with par-baked items, so the pricing is higher. If you want an everyday sealed-in-plastic sandwich sitting in a refrigerator for 6 hours, this isn't the place for you. I think they are a good value for the quality of product they make. Also, there can be a long line and a 5-10 minute wait, particularly on weekends. So if you're in a rush on a Sunday morning, you could get frustrated. I'm happy to see an independent shop doing well, and so I stop in regularly. One final note -- their coffee drinks are quite fine, but they are primarily a bakery. So their offerings are not as many as some coffee shops. I find their staff friendly and attentive. All in all, this place makes me feel like I'm giving myself a treat. And I'm worth it. read more

If you want an abundance of fresh baked pastries, this is your place. My family and I came on a Friday afternoon after lunch and it was pretty empty. There aren't a ton of places to sit but there are is a long table in the middle and tables along the walls. When it gets packed, it can get pretty noisy since the line is really close to all the seating. The pain au chocolat was amazing. So soft and flaky but also crunchy and filled with lots of chocolate. One of the best that I've had and you can tell it was made that morning. The hot food that my family got (salmon patty, Mediterranean fish soup, and I think rice) was just okay. In this age where there are often several options at each trash can area for recyclables, compost and landfill, the self-bus station had just one trash receptacle. When I asked the woman at the till where we should put our empty cans, she replied that they go in the trash. I must have looked surprised, because she told me I could put them anywhere I wanted, in a tone that made it clear she thought I was being unreasonable for even asking the question. My daughter then saw her roll her eyes and make a snarky comment to her co-worker, in full view of anyone in the cafe. when my daughter called her out on it, she first tried to push back, but then she very dismissively said "I'm sorry," clearly wanting us to just leave her alone. It's a shame, because instead of our nice dinner, we will remember rudeness from the personnel we generously tipped when we ordered, all because I had the temerity to inquire about recycling our cans, which must have been two of dozens, if not hundreds, that BF is apparently not even trying to recycle. read more

My hubby loved the bacon Banh Mi on ciabatta while the Caprese baguette sandwich didn't quite cut it. While the ginormous foot long fresh baguette with large dollops of fresh mozzarella and meaty tomato slices was scrumptious, I could barely taste the skimpy pesto and wasn't a big fan of the romaine lettuce. I've never seen cheap romaine lettuce in a caprese sandwich. Where was the arugula? Roasted red peppers or caramelized onions would have elevated the flavor. Would have been nice to have another veggie sandwich on the menu. The baguette gets stiff and doesn't keep well after a few hours. The bread is best eaten fresh! Save your appetite the Croissant and Monkey Bread! My hubby enjoyed the flaky buttery soft Chocolate Croissant. I wasn't a big fan of the Chocolate Chip Cookie. The greasy cookie was missing the soft and moist texture that as I was hoping for. The little Cinnamon button is nothing more than a piece of fried dough. There is a huge selection of pastries and many other items. The coffee and tea was just soooo good! I had a pecan & chocolate scone and it was delicious and not too sweet! I purchased 4 glazed donuts to go and ate one this afternoon; it was good, it was unique to BF, it did not taste anything like a donut you'd get at Krispie Kreme, which is a positive- not overly sweet. Customer service was awesome, and I emailed them at 0800 to ask about vegan options- asking for a friend (!!) And I received a response within about two hours... that's awesome!! They don't have vegan options for food. The main con for me is they are quite expensive but they are located in DC. Definitely check BF out, it's worth the experience! read more

Broad beans, eggplant, lentils, kale. But also meatloaf and roasted chicken. Stuffed to the brim sandwiches. Did I mention pies, cookies, cakes? Oh man. It is difficult to choose from the delicious array of pastries and baked foods on offer. But choose you must and you will not be disappointed. This is a casual vibe. You stand in line, pick up your food, pay the cashier. So it's not exactly date night material. But for an easy lunch or brunch, it's perfect. Plenty of tables inside and out, as well as a communal table. Parking out back can get tight. My only beef is that at check out, the tip option automatically starts at 18%. I don't mind tipping when service is involved but in this case, there really isn't any service. But this is a common new way of doing things and not unique to Bread Furst. On Sunday, however, after selecting a seasonal pie and brownie, I asked the employee (Catherine) if I could sample their bread. Because this bakery is named after bread, I thought it might be special. After I made such a request, Catherine very condescendingly remarked "it must be too expensive to purchase a whole loaf" and that she understood "what a big commitment" is such a purchase. It's a great spot to get a morning coffee with a friend--definitely busy in the morning but the wait wasn't too long and there was plenty of outdoor seating. I don't know if it was COVID related -- that they aren't selling as much or whether it was a day old or whether it was designed that way. So I had a brisket with arugula sandwich. The brisket was absolutely great. The marbled (black and white) bread fell apart when I picked it up. It was dry even with an abundance of mayonnaise. I also picked up their whole grain loaf and had it sliced. When I got home 3-4 hours later and tried my first it, dry. I realize that an artisanal bakery like this uses no preservatives, yet after this experience it will probably be an even longer time for me to go back to Bread Furst. They've been around a while but I still don't know the origins of the "Furst" spelling. I'm not a huge fan of Van Ness and when I visited it was tough to park and the noise was atrocious, but these are somewhat transient things. More substantively, they had a long slender space with a lot of people working, and a variety of hot food, baked goods, and some canned and bottled deli items. The cinnamon chocolate monkey bread I sampled sounded rather appealing, but didn't really wow me; I found it rather dry and crusty and neither as sweet nor as filling as I might have hoped. I was happy they had chia pudding; nothing fancy but it'll fill you up. I kind of hoped for more, but they didn't really do anything wrong. It was our first time. We love the smell of the bakery. We got everything bagel but it was too hard. The Boston pudding the cake in there was dry and crumbly. The hazelnut bar was like eating thick frosting from the cake and the bottom layer also kinda cakie crumbly texture. In the winter with your coat on it can get hard to maneuver. Two coffees, a bagel with lox (the bagel was about the size of a Lenders bagel) and a croissant - like pastry was about $25. The coffees were ok but nothing to write home about. The pastry was super delicious -- I cannot remember the name of the pastry but it was similar to an almond croissant. The bagel was hard to bite into because the outer crust was so hard (overly toasted on the outside) but was decent. There was barely any lox on the bagel. Came here because we needed something in a pinch. Even if I found myself in this neighborhood again, I would probably go to the Starbucks down the street. read more

I love this place. Most authentic baguettes I've had outside Paris. Lots of pastries to choose from as well. I love everything about this place, the outdoor seating, community seating in the middle of the restaurant and the intimate 2 person tables where you can see the bread being prepped and baked in the kitchen. Another plus is the kid table and play area toward the back of the restaurant near the rest rooms. Large offering of breads so not just baguettes but brioche, multigrain, olive and other varieties as well. Similarly quite an offering of croissants for whatever you're in the mood for. I normally go with pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant or plain since I'm a purist). Bread Furst also has a large offering of prepared food. Some is healthy, like the quinoa salad, and some not so much like the other pastries and cakes in the case. I'm also a huge fan of the canelle. I also really like what is offered at the coffee bar and in the gelato case. This amazing find is a 2 block walk from the American University metro stop on the red line. A fifteen minute walk from my house but I'm thankful for the parking lot in the back alley with its entrance to the cafe whenever I stop here when I stop in while out running errands. read more

Holy Cow! I was visiting a friend and stopped by this place and was absolutely blown away by the caliber of the menu options, bread types, and the service considering how busy they were! So even before you walk into the store you can smell the bread baking from down the block and your mouth automatically starts drooling just a little. So when I saw the long line, I was immediately disappointed BUT the line moves so fast! The breakfast menu is simple, the options to buy take away breads are aplenty and basically everything looks and is delicious. I ordered the messy breakfast sandwich with bacon, added the cheese slice and swamped in a sesame bagel cause why not!! All the breakfast ingredients are delicious but honestly, the combination is just fantastic and amazing! We also shared raisin bran and an oatmeal muffin - which was so moist and delectable!
