Delicious! Can't get enough of the sourdough bread. Maybe in future they will also have a few dairy free options?

This isn't about the food, but the INCREDIBLY​ rude service. I am really hoping the owner sees this. Bread is normally busy and I can accept quick greetings, rushing through orders, and a slight lack of friendliness due to how busy they can get at certain times. I understand ​because I​ owned a similar business for 13 years. However, ​I would NEVER have tolerated how one of their employees (or owners? No idea) treated me while my mom was visiting. We were there on​ the morning of November 20th at 9am, and a guy with "scruff" (a slight beard) was working the counter. We were leaving for a 9 hour road trip. We ordered cookies and a sandwich​. A nice gal got the cookies for me. The cookies were placed in a thin brown paper lunch bag (standard​ for them), which was already getting greasy on the outside, so when the sandwich​ was brought up and placed next to the cookies, I asked if we could have another bag for the sandwich​ while my mom paid (the two sandwiches​ were wrapped in saran wrap). HE GRABBED THE SANDWICH​, AND STARTED TO CRAM IT ON TOP OF THE COOKIES! As if I wouldn't have been capable of doing the same, if that was what I wanted? I took it from him before he could finish, and he stopped and said to me "You really want ANOTHER bag?" and I said "Yes, we are leaving for a day long road trip​, and want to keep the items separate​" (not even mentioning what should be obvious - I didn't want the outside of the saran wrap to be covered in grease, regardless of the roadtrip). He grabbed another brown paper bag, put it on the counter and finished​ our transaction while ....and this is the kicker....shaking his head the entire time. I will be honest, I had some choice words, but my mom was with me. Being from the area, I was embarrassed​ that my mom witnessed it, when I brag about Colorado's small town friendliness. We walked out and she said "Was he as rude as I thought he was?" and I said "yes, sorry". First of all, having owned a similar business - that employee would be fired right then if I had seen it. Some people should never be in customer service positions, and he is one of them. Second, those bags, unless the owner or manager doesn't know who to order from, cost 4 cents per bag (they are very thin, cheap paper bags, and on the small side). So I think you can spare one without shaking your head and giving me attitude. And lastly, I've wondered for years why in the world a place that serves greasy pastries like cinnamon​ rolls and cookies doesn't used waxed bags like most bakeries do (ranging from small businesses like BIT in Telluride, to Whole Foods), so that you don't get grease all over your car when you get some cookies. The cookies are good - don't get me wrong - but I don't want their greasy bags on my car seats. So I grab a bunch of napkins to place under the bag. So I just waste napkins because they are too cheap to buy waxed bags. That doesn't make much sense to me. Do your customers a favor - appreciate the fact that we are giving you our money, and treat us​ well, which includes providing us with appropriate bags for purchases, and even more than one bag if we want to keep items separated! I don't plan on going back anymore. Bread is not the only place that has good food, and I don't deserve to be treated so rudely for no reason I can possibly understand. Apparently, ​the owners of Bread think they are something super special and don't need to worry about customer service - but word spreads fast in small towns, and I just noticed a few other bad reviews about customer service while typing this. Hopefully karma catches up with them. (PS - I actually took a photo of the greasy bag of cookies, but I don't see anyplace to post it). read more

After seeing the reviews in Yelp, we made it a point to stop by last week during our trip to Durango, and we're so glad we did. Wow, where do I start? You can hardly get in the place due to all of the BLM signs (demand) and anti-gun notices (ban). Once you're inside the Covid rules are applied when convenient - if they want more customers inside they'll say "those people are together" and they apparently count as one (?). If you need assistance with your order, it's "you'll have to wait outside." Ok, so you made it through the sign slalom to the register and you ask for a menu. The surly employee says we don't have any posted, and asks you what kind of stuff you want. So let me get this right, you had time to build and post all of those political signs outside of your RESTAURANT and you couldn't so much as tape a MENU to the window? Fine, we'll have 3 quiche. They're so cold they are frozen in the middle. Can we get them warmed up surly guy? Sure, but it will take 20 minutes, and right now you need to wait outside (ah, the covid rules return!!). Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else. No matter your political standing, you deserve good food and decent service for your money. read more

So lucky I discovered this place the day before our vacation ended. Had I discovered it when we arrived a week before I'd have gained 20 pounds. Oh my god, it us sooooo good. Seriously, a bakers paradise. I did not get to try everything but the cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, danish, and pan de chocolate were great. I was particularly impressed the berry muffins were moist, but not wet. It's had to cook with berries and not get things too moist. These were perfect. read more

Bread has good, fast service available even with larger parties as long as you aren't getting any lattes. Getting scones, bread and regular coffee or hot water was quite fast. I've had an apple tart as well as one of the oatmeal maple scones and both were delicious. Next time I'm in Durango I'll be sure to stop by. read more

We went here for two mornings during our vacation . They had yummy and fresh Blueberry muffins. The cinnamon rolls were also super yummy. I imagine it is all was amazing. We came to bread to grab a cookie. We ended up leaving with 5- and the scone of the day. We got the chocolate chip, the gingersnap, the Sow Your Oats cookies, and the scone of the day. The chocolate chip was one of the best I've ever had- slightly crispy on the outside, but chewy on the inside. A slightly buttery taste with intermittent choxolately goodness. The gingersnap was my idea of the perfect gingerbread cookie. We got it for my mom, but I ended up eating at least half. It had the perfect blend of flavors- molasses, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg, in a perfectly slightly crispy/slightly chewy exterior. So good. The Sow Your Oats cookie was exactly what I wanted- and better from a healthy oatmeal cookie. It was slightly sweet, having an almost maple flavor. I saw chia seeds, oats, and a blend of healthy ingredients that I couldn't believe tasted that good. The scone of the day- Cranberry Pecan, was perfectly buttery and flaky with a delicious dried cranberry or pecan every so often. Definitely one of the best scones I've ever had. My grandma, who is quite picky, enjoyed it as well. I wish I could have gotten bread or cinnamon rolls, but we were leaving, so we got whatever was most portable- and it was all amazing. We discovered this place on our last day in Durango. :-( I want to move here just based on this place, it is wonderful. My hat is off to the baker and owner, what a great place. I would have pictures but we ate everything too fast, :-) will definitely be back. Would be nice to have A little more seating in the bakery but it's kind of one of those grab and go kind of places. James B's review is correct if we would have discovered this our first day I think I would gain 20 pounds as well. We got some Board head meat at Central market and came over and got the rolls at the bakery for sandwiches for a picnic one day in Mesa Vertie, it was wonderful. read more

Most importantly, wonderful baked goods. Friendly staff with great service. Oatmeal cookie and peanut butter cookie were both excellent. Ciabatta loaf was gone in 12 hours. Will go back to try other things, which is a testament because we are tourists. We are changing our schedule to visit Bread one more time. If you live in the Durango area or are just passing through, you will find superb bread to enjoy with the good local produce, jams, and honey. read more

This place just bums me out. I've tried twice now to eat here (we don't live in Durango). The first time they were out of everything and just recently we had a crappy experience. My husband is allergic to egg and dairy products. All their prepped sandwiches had mayo or cheese in them. He asked if they could make one sandwich without cheese or mayo. They said they would do that after they served everyone else in the line that had formed behind us. Now, maybe we could be cool with this, but we'd just spent ten minutes waiting patiently for one of the counter clerks to finish his conversation on tats with another patron. one of BEST bakeries you will ever stumble upon, it is on the North Side in a sweet little corner. EVERYTHING here is to die for, we actually order our thanksgiving pies form here every year too. The most popular and insanely delicious thing they have is the ham and cheese croissants, which will most likely all be gone if you dont go early. They are probly most known for their "sow your oats" cookies...an oat cookie packed with so much flavor and goodness!! I personally love their chocolate gulch cookies which are so rich, soft yet a lil crunchy and their macaroons, also the cookies are HUGE. They also have delicious sandwiches too and yummy coffee!!!, i love the turkey and cranberry sandwich best. All of their loafs of bread are made to perfection!!!!! i love the olive bread. The employees are so friendly and sweet and will sometimes throw in an extra cookie or croissant for you if you go towards closing time. Their coffee is a great way to kick start the morning: dark, flavorful, and potent. The various pastries are above average. I am unsure why every pastry is so greasy. The cost is fairly high, too. I come here every so often to enjoy something greasy and their coffee, but I cannot recommend them for a daily dose of Bread. read more

While the bakery goods are delicious most of the time, there is sometimes inconsistency. My issue is with the tip jar. In the past, the owners have been accused by the employees of stealing their tips. The rationale for this is that the owners believe the employees are stealing from them! Mind you, there are no cameras, it's a cash only business and anyone can open the register, that is, there is not a dedicated cashier. I don't know if this issue has ever been resolved, but I know that I will not be patronizing a place that steals tips from the employees. So, if you want to tip, hand it right to the person you want to have it and skip the tip jar entirely. Better yet, get rid of the tip jar. read more

We had a tough time finding the place since our GPS wouldn't do the CR thing. Once we found it, we were so thankful we did. First, we needed lunch so we got some sandwiches that were very tasty. We needed some treats of course so we got a variety to try. The Sow your Oats were yummy! But everything really was good so that was not a surprise. I guess everyone here agrees that the food/bread is delicious but the service put it at a 5 for me. They were so generous and kind that I would go back just for that. My family and I love this place. Visited for 2 days and came here 3 times!!! Tried 3 sandwiches--the turkey cheddar sandwich wins but needs more of the chipotle-cranberry sauce. The other two (mozzarella and salami) are good but I think the bread used to make these sandwiches is too chewy (the turkey uses something more of a squawbread). What kept us coming back though were the cookies!!! In particular, the peanut butter cookie. So tender and fragile, like a Mexican wedding cake cookie. AAhh--with a coffee, a perfect dessert experience. The oatmeal and gingersnap (soft not crispy) are also very good. I was not impressed with the chocolate cookie though. Met Rob, the owner, warm and engaging. Asked him if was willing to ship his peanut butter cookies across state lines--he said he was willing to give it try but could not commit that they could hold up. He believed that there must be some bakery in LA that made his style peanut butter cookie---well, I haven't found them and I'll eat broken cookies from his bakery anytime. Note: this is where I bought breakfast for Mesa Verde (blueberry muffins). The scones look beautiful. They only take cash. My husband and I are starting to split our time between Los Angeles and Durango, Colorado. My brother-in-law recommended Bread, and I absolutely love it! It's away from the tourist trap of Main Avenue, and appears to be a locals only place. Everything I have tried so far has been delicious! It has a cool, laid-back vibe and the service is friendly. They take cash only. I have tried their ham & cheese croissant, the almond scone, macaroons, green chile croissant, challah bread (which I used to make french toast), ciabatta bread and coffee cake. Oh, and I also tried this flat bread that is drizzled with olive oil and has a touch of sea salt on it! It was just coming out of the oven so I couldn't resist - it was fantastic! They have some pre-made sandwiches in their deli case that I have not tried, but they look amazing! I also had their latte, which was pretty good (and strong). read more

I think that I could never live in Durango because I would eat so much of Bread's bread and other stuff that i would explode. I've been to bakeries all through this country, and, what's perhaps more germane, France, and Bread's bread, especially their baguette's is second to none. I mean that: their baguettes are like what French kids carry in the baskets on their bicycles. And, if the bread isn't enough, their other baked goods are to die. It's all good, but the ham and cheese croissants are showstoppers among equals. The place itself is charming and very laid-back, sort of what you might expect in Austin, where I live. As strange as it might sound, Bread was one of the main reasons we returned to Durango for our vacation this year. It won't be the last visit. read more

I've been getting my fix at bread for years. When I lived in Farmington, I would make the two hour drive just to get one of their brownies. Now I live in Durango and consider this bakery one of my considerations when I built my new home in Durango. I LOVE their brownies! I go to great lengths go get them. Their double chocolate, cherry and cream cheese brownies are the best in the world. Almost everything they make is excellent. Unfortunately, as of late, they have been serving a walnut brownie that isn't very good. Kind of dry and tasteless to me. The first time I thought that someone messed up the blending of the ingredients and I just got a bad one. But I tried the walnut brownies three time total and, for me, the walnut brownie is not worth buying. Plus now it seems like every time I go in there they have the dang walnut brownies. I left there empty handed today, which kind'a ruined my trip to that end of town. I tried to send a note to them via their suggestion box online or via email but they apparently don't accept emails. This is my sister's favorite bread bakery in Durango and their bread is delicious. The service was really good and I'm rounding up bc I can't leave 4.5 stars... I bought bread and 3 cookies and only really enjoyed the ginger snap (of ginger snap, Chocolate (was very dry), and peanut butter (was oily)). I should have tried the Sow Your Oats cookie--apparently that's their best cookie. I definitely like this place and will be back. read more
