Finally. After hearing about the Brazen Head for years, I finally made it for dinner. Menu is pretty traditional. But I have to say my favorite part was the brief conversation with the host on the way in: Host: "Good evening. Welcome to the Brazen Head." Me: "Thanks." Host: "We don't take credit cards. Just ATM. Will that work?" Me: "Yup." Host: "Your first time here?" Me: "It is!" Host: "Well, keep it a secret. And don't tell the ugly people." What a hidden gem. Literally, it's hidden... was looking for a late night dinner - 12:30am - (one of the only reasons I miss my home - Tel Aviv, Israel - who never sleeps). Yelped, get direction, started driving... I was already a little confused because I live two blocks away from this location, drive in front of it every day on the way to work and never EVER seen it. So we get there, or do we? we drive back and forth and don't see anything, all looks very residential.. We pull the number and walk to the door and only then notice a tiny menu and an entrance to a very warm, 1920's restaurant. Can't believe I never came here before! Dinner was delicious, I wanted to try everything in the menu (and would have if wasn't stopped by my dining partners). Very cool hidden gem in the Cow Hollow/Marina area. My girlfriend lives just down the street and we finally decided to try it. When you walk in it's got a very old style speakeasy feel and that definitely confirms throughout the experience. This place gets an A for AMBIANCE. The bar man new his stuff and served me a tremendously tasty flight of 3 red wines that ended up going perfectly with my courses. The only hit this place takes is that they kept switching waiters on us and we weren't really getting very good service. By far the best burger I've had in San Francisco. Could've been the stiff martinis, but I'd vouch for the attentive service, cozy ambiance, savory comfort food, and late night hours any day. We were led here on a recommendation of a passerby after arriving at Umami around midnight to find they had stopped serving. After declaring war on the manager, we left and seemingly stumbled upon this culinary gem. Two of my guy friends and I ended up ordering three dirty martinis, two clam chowders, an app of meatballs, and 3 cheeseburgers for our Euro-late dinner. I remember seeing the burger in my hand, and then seconds later, it was gone. We literally inhaled our food, and it was glorious. This could be a great date spot, but be warned, a food coma isn't really conducive to feeling a little frisky afterwards. I'd recommend brazen on a cold winter's night, when you're in the presence of great company and need a little somethin to warm your soul. Bring cash/debit...it's somewhat of a splurge. read more

Fun/locals only place to eat. It's different....doesn't have a sign out front! Somebody's got to tell you about it! Old/local group at the bar looked like they were having way to much fun!! I must say that I was completely disappointed with the service and the food. I was just here on Sunday night August 30, 2014 and I must say that the food was outstanding. My absolute favorite date night spot!!! Came here with my boyfriend last weekend and we were both extremely impressed! We're planning to go to east side west for drinks and a light dinner but it had already turned into a bar. So the security recommended this place and said it was awesome so we had to check it out. We come in and it's pretty busy and dim lit. Very romantic feel! Wait was half an hour so we decided to start at the bar with some drinks. Got a bottle of Liberty School and bartender was high energy and very friendly. We ended up only waiting about 15 minutes and got a very nice two top table! We got a Caesar salad and then the Crab Ravioli for dinner. HIGHLY recommend! Will definitely be back! Love this place. read more

I was staying in the Marina district for a weekend, festival sale at Fort Mason and wanted some good food but wasn't in the mood for "upscale" dining at some of the finer establishments in the area. This low-key gem is a go-to for comfort food (prime rib, standards like chicken marsala, a fantastic burger), but I have recently been choosing lighter fare that complies with my temporarily less indulgent diet. I had the special sea bass with beurre blanc tonight, and it was one of the most exquisitely prepared pieces of fish I have had in recent memory. Excellent spot for dinner. They have set up tables outside with heat lamps. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed our food, I had the lobster ravioli and it was delicious. Overall, the food was pretty good, but I have to say that the menu definitely looks better than it tastes. There is no sign outside of the restaurant, just a green awning, so know exactly where you are going. There were 8 of us & we got seated right away, even though they don't take reservations. However, go early because the restaurant is tiny & there is only one "large" table which we squished on. What I ate... Appetizers: 1) Roasted garlic bulb & camembert cheese- Wish they peeled the garlic for us. The cheese was a little too melty & hard to spread on the toast. 2) Beef tenderloin carpaccio- In my opinion, too much lemon dijon sauce. Took away from the taste of the carpaccio. 3) French onion soup- Good, but nothing special. Entree: Their signature New York pepper steak dish- I was thinking the cream sauce would be a white sauce, but it was more like just gravy. Working nearby, I never get a chance to eat here. Who wants to be nearby work on a day off?! Well, I finally went before a graveyard shift. I send a lot of people to eat here when they want something nearby that's different from what you find on Union Street. It's a small restaurant, with a definite neighborhood charm to it. There is NO sign, just a menu on the window. I started with the French Onion Soup, and it was very good. As always, I doused it with lots of pepper. I will have to try the Cesar Salad sometime, but can't seem to stray from the soup. I had the signature Pepper Steak, which comes in two sizes; an 8 oz and 12 oz. It was cooked properly to a medium rare. The pepper cream sauce was good, but I wanted more bite to it, so I added pepper to my pepper steak. The sides are slightly uninspired at mashed potato and veggies which were green beans, carrots, zucchini and cabbage. Everything was very good. Service was great and professional, I just wanted some butter with my bread but didn't want to eat too much, I've never had the opportunity to have a drink here, but the wine list looks very good. The Brazen Head also has a block party every year in September benefiting the Susan G Komen For the Cure. You can get great tri tip sandwiches, sample wines, and have fun and feel good knowing you are donating to a good cause. Contrary to what people say here, parking is NOT hard at all. Just park at the motel across the street for $8 if you can't find anything on the street. Cash or ATM card only and open LATE until 1:00 am. Monday and Tuesday are Prime Rib Night. read more

If you're looking for a sign outside, don't bother because you won't find it. It's like they try to keep it extra hush to make sure outsiders don't know the semi gem that resides in these parts. But when you manage to finally go inside, you'll know instantly you came to the right spot. Dimly lit, cozy, and the smell of steak aroma fills your nose. And with a good size bar, you can order a drink while you wait to be called to your table. Adolfo L. was right. They get down to it and give you no bs or dress up to the occasion. We got some beer carpaccio, fried oyster, and escargot to start it off, which were both pretty good. Beef was nicely thin sliced and dressed in a good mix of dressing and filling. The escargot came out super buttery which went great with the bread. Fried Oysters probably came with high expectations, but it was standard. And with the right choice I went for the bigger option of the NY strip at rare. Moments after we devoured the appetizers, there it was. With a few side vegetables and a slab of mash potatoes, it looked mighty good, and almost like a home cooked steak dinner or better. The meat did not disappoint. It didn't promise any dry age or any running sauces to bring out any particular tastes, but it was just pure and simple.....NY Strip that just needed to be cut up and eaten. What I like about the place is its low key atmosphere and how everyone there were there for a similar goal, nice cozy dinner in a friendly neighborhood like bar/steakhouse. My friend lives around the corner and he really wanted to check it out because he saw a lot of people coming in and out, but there was no real signage. So, we ventured in. The menu is pretty standard run of the mill American joint. We ordered: - Oysters on the half shell - really fresh and a good price - Seafood Chowder - it was ok - Filet Mignon - decent - Some gooey chocolate cake - that was yummy! We also had some Syrah, but I don't remember the name of the wine, but it was really good and complimented our meal well. The service is quite good and the staff is always readily available. The decor is interesting with a ton of baseball memorabilia. Keep in mind this place doesn't accept credit cards only debit cards. Reminds me of being in Europe. I will call this our secret meeting spot. The Brazen Head is quiet and old. It hides all the yuppies and elderly inside. None of this trendy Marina crap. I can imagine only the locals know about The Brazen Head because it blends so well into the building. If you have the address, that's all you have to go on. Be brave. Approach the corner spot adorned with fairy lights and open the door. Access to The Brazen Head is granted. Parking around The Brazen Head sucks ass. I drove around the Marina for 45 min looking for parking. I shoulda just paid $5 to the motel across the st and called it a day. Supposedly there is a parking lot behind the post office, but i never found the entrance. My friend and I ended up finding street parking a mile down. And we walked. The Brazen Head was well worth it. Its a hidden gem, the service is great, and they give out free match boxes. The ahi tuna tartare was great and the burger did not disappoint. A thick and juicy piece of burger, this is pub food at its finest. There's actually something for everyone here from seafood to salad to full on steaks. The Brazen Head is a great place for a late bite, a secret rendezvous, friends, fine wine & spirits. And best of all, its so hidden the papparazzi won't even find you here. Shhh. Overall, the experience was good enough that I would return here during regular dinner hours, not just late night. But for late night, this place is definitely a home run. This review is on the burger only (and some of the ambiance). I went here after hearing that they have a good burger and that they do. Nothing too outstanding and it doesn't make my top ten but it's a solid and well made one. I liked the grilled onions that came with it and it was cooked the right temp. The environment is really nice and dark and I grabbed a quiet corner table to chill while I read and ate. There was a definitely neighborhood vibe here although it's right across from a hotel. Most of the peeps seemed like they were locals and not tourists which is a bonus, and the staff were very attentive and the service was really good overall. I know the steak is what people go for more here, so I may come back when I get a meat craving that doesn't involve burgers - we'll see! read more

This is a gem hidden in plain site right off Lombard. Four of us went here for dinner on Superbowl Sunday. The bar was busy while the game was on, and the dining room empty until the game ended. We snagged our table before the last kickoff & had our server's undivided attention. Needless to say, service was great from both the server & busboy. Started with drinks which were prompt & just what the Dr ordered. Then on to Caesar salad; good dressing, but croutons were from a box. The plate with my hanger steak in port reduction sauce was impressive - good size steak, steamed green beans and a large portion of polenta. It's rare these days to get anything other than an ala carte item on your plate. The green beans were a bit underdone. I like al dente, but these were just this side of raw. The restaurant is dimly lit, so I initially thought the polenta was mashed potatoes with some sort of gravy. The polenta with a red sauce was a nice surprise. Dessert was chocolat pot de creme - yummy chocolate goodness. Overall cute place with solid food and a nice cozy atmosphere. No reservations taken & cash or debit card only. read more

I love coming to the Brazen Head for their prime rib dinners. Great intimate atmosphere, as well. I feel like I am in an upscale English pub. Ok, but over-rated and not worth the hype. My friends in the Marina were raving about this place, especially the filet mignon. I thought it was good, but quite honestly, there are better places in the city that are chains (i.e. Ruth's Chris, Morton's, etc), let alone great local establishments. We had a large group and I constantly felt that it was so cramped that I couldn't move and my foot was falling asleep during dinner. Also, it is overpriced. First time in here last night for a drink...definitely an old school establishment. I had heard Derek Jeter and some Yankees come in when they are playing in Oakland. The bartender confirmed this, but said last summer after they came in the team went into a batting slump, so they were superstitious and stopped frequenting the joint. It could of been a story he made up so no one starts dropping in looking for autographs...lol. A great place to come for a late night drinks and a bite to eat. We tried to go to Liverpool Lil's at 11:30pm last night but the kitchen was closed so they sent us over here, their sister restaurant. Gumbo starter was fabulous, served with garlic bread. Petite filet for girlfriend, perfectly cooked and just the right size. Veal piccata, perfect. Ambiance is so fun. I found this place fantastic. So inconspicuous and personal that you feel like you have been there a thousand times. It is so unique to the area. I am not sure I would take large party of people here as the place is small and cozy. But for a party of 4 or 2 it is perfect. The food was delicious and I had the pepper steak which was perfectly prepared. The salad with blue cheese was also delicious and I would for sure recommend this place to others. What I love about experiencing places like this is that I would never had stopped in if a friend had not taken me here. The only strange thing is that I believe they only take cash (or an ATM). What a little neighborhood gem! I came across this place at the suggestion of one of my coworkers, after a late night shift. The cozy atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff (and owner, Eddie) had me hooked right away. The late night happy hour (served until 1am) is not to be missed. While I did not have a full dinner here, the menu looked pretty great, and Mia (the amazing bartendress) told me that they use all fresh ingredients and that the meat is all from Golden Gate Meat Co. The service (Bartender/Assistant Manager Mike)is awesome if not a little feisty at the bar but that just makes the patrons feel more at home .
