We stopped here one night for dinner. It's a little off the beaten path and definitely not touristy. Located close to the Marienplatz so it's an easy walk if you're looking for something a bit more authentic. The night we were here there were a few tables of locals enjoying their beer and sausages. Typical German food here...beer, pretzels and sausages. Excellent bratwurst and fresh homemade sauerkraut. Surprised every restaurant serves mustard in packets and not fresh and I'm still looking for someone to serve hot pretzels, but I guess I'll have to go back to the states for that one. read more

Last meal while on vacation in Munich and it was one to remember. Maybe is was just the company I kept (my wife) or the love we have for the city or that the place is dimly lit but it felt pretty romantic. The wurst and bier and our awesome wait staff made this a meal we will talk about when we are sitting on our porch in our 80s! Delicious lunch at Bratwurstherzl. Our waiter was a nice man who took great care of us and brought our food quickly. We devoured the basket of pretzels and decided they were the best we had in Munich. I had the white sausages with sweet mustard. They are undoubtedly my favorite but only available before noon at most restaurants. They were awesome! My husband had a large grilled Nuremberg City sausage with sauerkraut. He loved how crisp the casing was. We completed our lunch with Apple Strudel and ice cream. Fantastic! Located on the perimeter of the Viktualienmarkt, the patio makes for excellent people watching. Bratwurstherzl was our first stop on the Munich food tour. It is located quite close to the Marienplatz and the busier tourist areas of Munich and so they definitely get a good trade in folks who aren't from around here. They have a nice outside seating area, but be prepared for people who smoke. Inside, it is comfortable and out of the sun. Beer, pretzels and sausages. Specifically bratwurst. Served with a creamy mustard and a sweet mustard. And for my friend who is vegetarian, we had a nice obatzda. Service was decent, likely because there was a "tip" line on the check. This is a great place a little off the beaten path from the the market area. The food was fantastic! My wife and I split the Wollwurst as we'd not had that before and we loved it! The nice fellow that was serving us was friendly and the menu also had English versions of the descriptions. Overall I'd recommend this place for a snack or even a full meal. read more

Bratwurstherzl is a traditional Bavarian pub restaurant near Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. We came in a little past noon for a light lunch, and the place was already packed with only a few tables vacant. We ended up sharing a long table with another couple. Sour pork liver - After a bit of apprehension about trying liver, we found that the dish was very tasty! The slightly tangy gravy masked most of the typical liver aftertaste, and it was also a good sauce to go with pretzels. It came with a separate plate of roasted potatoes. Veal and pork sausages - We initially wanted to try weisswurst, but we found that the restaurant had already run out. However, after trying weisswurst the next day at another establishment, the veal and pork sausages at Bratwurstherzl were very similar, just without casing. This dish came with a cold, creamy potato salad with cucumbers. Each table had a basket of large pretzels, and they were 1 euro each. The restaurant seemed pretty understaffed, especially since it was peak rush hour. We had to actively flag down our waitress to order as well as request the check. read more

We were looking for a place to have a Bavarian dinner near Marienplatz and this was one of the few that weren't booked all night and looked like it had a lot of locals. Therefore, we tested our luck and got a table shortly. We sat right next to a table of local Germans who were having some heated conversation with huge steins in their hands. That is always a good sign, right? We ended up getting Beef goulash, veal schnitzel, Grill combo and noodles with gravy for my son. They also gave us pretzels for the table but turned out it was not free! They counted how many pretzels you had and charged accordingly. Nevertheless, the food here was actually pretty good and came in big portion. My husband's grill combo came with pork chop and sausages and they have the natural charcoal flavor to them. I ordered a side salad and it also includes their "potato salad" and they were unique from the American version but more delicious. I was pleasantly surprised with the goulash's flavor and overall prices. You would think a place right at Victualienmarkt would charge you an arm and a leg but they don't. I would definitely recommend coming here if you have been to beer garden already for a change of scene. read more

We visited two other Brauhaus in Munich on a Saturday night, even though we found tables, we waited for service that never arrived, so we left those establishments, hoping to find some service somewhere for dinner. At Bratwurstherzl, once more we found a table for five, but we also found service. We were seated, we had our drinks ordered, dinner ordered, and had a very pleasant meal. Decent price and good food! This place is near Marienplatz. We sat outdoors because it was a nice day out. Ordered 2 pretzels and 4 weisswurst (white sausage), which is a staple meal in Munich. FYI, you aren't supposed to eat the casing in the white sausage so make sure you take it off before consuming. Our bill came out to a little under 12 euros total! Only complaint is for service. Our waiter was rude. He thought I ordered a beer, which we explained that I did not. He was pretty pissed to have to take it back and was very cold towards us the rest of the time we were there. read more

Service is great, the food is amazing, and the beer is really great. We truly had a culinary adventure during our recent trip to Munich. We shared at each restaurant, which is a must since portions are HUGE everywhere. We also did this in hopes of fitting in more meals from as many places as possible. Then we found this place. This place put the aforementioned goal out of mind. We just kept coming back here our last two days. Firstly, the building is all dark wood and exposed brick with great, old wooden floors. In one room, a wood fire grill fills the air with fantastic aromas. It is a small restaurant with limited seating. It can also get warm when packed full. The ambiance cannot be beat. Our first experience was our introduction to their wood-fire grilled Nuremburg style sausages (Rostbratwurste) that come in 6, 8, 10 or 12 pieces. These little guys are served on cast iron heart shaped plate (hence the restaurant name, I believe.) We were served by an older gentleman who spoke great English and was very lively. He guided us effortlessly through our order and we were able to grab both the weinkraut (wine sauerkraut) and the potato salad with our meat. I had a mass of the Hacker Pschorr Edelhell straight from the wooden barrel. Then a nice bit of true German schnapps to finish the meal. Came for breakfast the next day for some delightful weisswurst and more Edelhell and more great service from a grand lady who even pointed out where I could buy the traditional sweet mustard that accompanies the Bavarian breakfast staple of weisswurst. She also helped me with some of my German. We went back for dinner that night and two German couples offered to let us sit with them. Our last day of the trip will always sit fondly in my memories. Again, service was exemplary. One of the ladies at our table lost a very valuable ring. One of the other guests had found it in the restroom and turned it into the kitchen staff. They in turned gave it to the manager and all was well, the panicked lady at peace. I went to owner and explained that we had nothing but praise for her fine establishment and she explained that 90% of her clientele are regulars (keep in mind, this place is in Tourist Center, right on the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz) and that staff and guest alike always come together to help each other out, in this case a missing ring. If we come back to Munich, which I feel sure that we will, it will be hard to visit many other restaurants with this place nearby. read more

Very cozy and friendly place in the heart of Munich. The beer selection is superb, of course, and I had some of the best little sausages with sauerkraut, mustard, and fresh horseradish I think I've had anywhere. For beer, we tried a few, but one of the nicest was "from the wooden barrel" -- I guess oaked or some such method. The menu is extensive -- all local foods, including some exotic options. For example, we tried the beef tongue in broth -- I wouldn't know how it compares since I've never had tongue this style, but it was very tasty and I'd consider it again! The ambiance is very energetic, but it's fitting and really warming and enjoyable. I was with another American friend and we sat at a community table and met a lovely local couple with whom we toasted multiple drinks and had a fantastic conversation. You get what you come for. Bavarian traditional pub atmosphere with a focus on bratwurst from the BBQ. They deliver, also Schnitzel and Lüngerl and soups good. Bretzn are fresh. Standards well done and us locals appreciate and frequent the place. My German friend took me here so I could have an authentic "German breakfast" before I leave. He ordered white sausages and beer for us. This is a pretty local place as I was the only non-German in the restaurant. The service was good and friendly. The sausages were soft, tender, but not mushy, and with wonderful flavors. She needed a hand, though, and it was often difficult to get her attention because of this. This place was recommended in Lonely Planet as an authentic German restaurant, but I think I was a little overwhelmed by the menu and did not know which meat dish to get. It was nice they had a menu in English though. My boyfriend's sausages were delicious, and my pork snitzel (vienna style) was really good too. We both got tall beers to wash it down with, and it was nice to sit outside. But, as good as the meat was, I think we both found the potato salad to be the most impressive. Take away message? I may not be a huge fan of meaty meat meat German food. The waitress didn't speak very much English and was a little abrupt with us. Wonderful spot close to Marienplatz. I ordered the sausage plate and potato salad which comes on a cute little heart shaped pewter plate. Don't let your American experience of "German Potato Salad" scare you off. This stuff was wonderful and the wurst was delicious with a nice char from the wood fired grill. If you are looking for an authentic Bavarian meal this is the place to go. It is located a block or so beside the market. We sat outside which was very nice. The bread(pretzels) they bring are so good. Just an FYI, bread is not free in restaurants in Europe, however, these pretzels were well worth it. I got the beginner sausages (6) and sour kraut. It was very good and on a side note, German sour kraut is NOTHING like what we serve in the USA, this tasted so good and not a harsh bite at all. My wife got the bratwurst and potatoe salad, which also was very good. The service was just OK. Our waiter did not stop by much, but passed the table often. He did ask us three times if we wanted more beer. The place was full of local people, so you know the food was the real deal. Cozy, historic restaurant with a simple menu of traditional foods. We enjoyed trying the Nuremberg sausages, which were somewhat similar to American breakfast sausages. Also ordered the Munich Weißwürst, which benefitted from mustard. We enjoyed seeing the sausages being grilled near where we were seated. For dessert, the Kaiserschmarrn (scrambled pancake with raisins and almonds) was tasty! read more

The food was nothing special, decent sized portions. The service however was beyond HORRENDOUS. The waiter, a tall older man, treated us like he didn't have time for us. He was very rude and dismissive. Sorry we don't speak German dude, sorry we're offending you by visiting your city. The restaurant is located in a pretty touristy area so it's not like we were the first! Also this waiter took it upon himself to take a tip out of our bill...he took the change without us telling him to. When we asked him for our change he told us he thought we said "keep it." Yea ok. He told us he'd go get some change and NEVER CAME BACK. Anyways the service here is awful. Really unacceptable how we got treated, and he clearly wasn't having a bad day because he didnt seem to be treating the other tables in the same manner. read more
