Had a birthday dinner at this restaurant last Thursday evening that had some problems, especially with service. In all honesty, I had not eaten here in a few years. The restaurant was moderately full, but not as full as one would think leading up to a holiday weekend. My party of 4 always enjoys a cocktail before dinner. We were seated promptly for our 7:30pm reservation, and we placed our drink orders soon after. What is unforgivable and truly amazing given that the restaurant was not super busy is that it took over 35 minutes to get those drinks. There are really no words for this. While perusing the menu, I asked one of the bus people if I could have a wine list as our server was no where to be found. She acknowledged me with a nod, but then went off and about clearing tables, totally disregarding my request. After several minutes upon realizing that my request was being blatantly ignored, I had to go up to the bar area myself to request a wine list. At this point, the same bus person saw me doing this and looked panicked. I am not sure if she did not speak English or if she was a tad slow and/or incompetent, but again, inexcusable. The meal for the most part was decent, but prices had definitely gone up quite a bit from my last visit. Maybe that might explain why the restaurant was not that busy. As a final note, the restaurant made no acknowledgment of my birthday, even though it was stated quite clearly in my reservation. Oh well, not the end of the world, but reflective of the way this establishment is managed. Service: our waitress was very sweet. Food and drinks came out fairly quickly. She was awesome grabbing some crayons for our daughter when she was about to have a meltdown. The drinks were pretty good as well. I enjoyed my grilled chicken sandwich and the french fries were pretty good. My husband didn't enjoy his french toast. It is pretty small with an intimate atmosphere. There is a bar area then a sitting area separated by some stairs. Overall, it was good but I wouldn't rush back. read more

Salmon was dry as a bone with very little flavor. But the true mystery of the evening was who was my wait staff? I had no less than three different people handling my table and waited 15-20 minutes for someone to take a drink order. Thank goodness we didn't want to order other drinks or had any issue with our meals because I don't know who I would have signaled for. At the end of the meal from the corner of my eye, I saw one waiter gesture impatiently at our table (we had been there an hour and a half) because we hadn't signed the check fast enough for his liking. I came in the evening on President's Day without planning, since the trains were running on a holiday schedule and I didn't realize I'd have to wait an extra hour for the next one. I came in a little frazzled, but the server Alder was very nice and sat me quickly. He even moved my table so that I would be next to an outlet and could charge my phone. Came here on early on a Friday night. There were a few tables sitting already but overall it wasn't packed yet. The service was incredibly slow and we noted that other tables that sat after us were being served before us. Not sure if there was a mishap with the kitchen or something. We ordered the French onion soup which was under seasoned and just not good. The crouton inside was so hard you couldn't break it up with the spoon and it got into the way of the soup. We also got the chicken lettuce cups which were served in a chili sauce on butter lettuce. The presentation didn't make any sense. The chicken in big pieces and was so heavily sauced you couldn't pick it up in the soft butter lettuce. It wasn't what we were expecting at all. The seared tuna was not good either. Food good if you can get them to serve you. Came in at 3:00 missed lunch but they are open so went. They were setting up tables but took forever to just get a piece of bread. Answer was "it's in the oven". If you're open be prepared. Otherwise close for prep. No ice in tap water. Couldn't get attention of server busy on her cell phone. Ordered appetizer when we started never got it. Either she didn't hear it or forgot. Ordered Pinot Grigio got Pinot noir. Waitress complained everyone comes in at same time. She did forgive the cost of the wine cause she got it wrong. We went here last week and it felt rushed. This week was on a sat. At 4:00 it got busy also with takeout orders. So I compare to places like Bar Fries with super service no matter what time. It's a shame because Brass Rail food is good. I can't fault staff. But owners that should understand service is key if you're paying more than a diner. read more

Our daughter was celebrating her birthday, so we decided to go to a local restaurant, the Brass Rail in Locust Valley, NY. We were greeted by the host who brought us to our table in the dining room. We had a round of drinks and all toasted our daughter for her birthday. The restaurant has a bar area and a dining room area. The bar area has some seating at the bar and several tables. Even though the bar was crowded it was not noisy. The lighting in the dining room was low, so you can have a quiet and enjoyable dinner. Some might say it's romantic! Our server, Christine, greeted us with big smile. We talked and drank our drinks without being rushed. We reviewed the menu which had quite an extensive selection of food. She came back and we ordered our entrees. My wife liked the breast of duck, my daughter liked the steak au poivre and French fries and my daughter's boyfriend and I like the crusted salmon with mashed potatoes. As we began to eat everyone commented how delicious the food was. The serving sizes were perfect and we were all satisfied that we had a wonderful and delicious meal. Locust Valley is a small hamlet on the north shore of Long Island. The Brass Rail is located in the Center of town with plenty of parking for their customers. We all enjoyed our meals and the restaurant experience. If you love great food, great service and enjoy a great night out, you will love the Brass Rail. Stopped in to The Brass Rail for lunch, we were working in the neighborhood for a client and this was a local recomendation so we decided to stop in. I was happy to see that this restaurant is owned by the same people who run The Wild Goose in Port Washington, which I had a great dinner date at a few months back. We came in for an early lunch, the outside had not been setup yet, so we went inside and was happy to see essentially the whole place to ourselves! Beautiful decor, nicely put together tables, classy music playing, full bar, and extensive menu to choose from. We ended up getting The Spicy Pea Soup, which was delicious, and I got a Cesar Salad with a Chicken Dish to go with it, my dad got the French Dip which he enjoyed very much. For mains, my wife tried the Short Rib Quesadilla which she thought was ok. This place is a gem. It gives off a romantic ambience due to the dimly lit interior, great for a date night. The food is consistently delicious each time we come. My favorite dishes are: short rib quesadilla, tri color salad, sesame crusted scottish salmon, blackened mahi mahi, steak au poivre (one of my favorite steaks ever), and their homemade ice cream (seriously the best ice cream you'll have). Oh those matchstick French Fries! Delicious!! I have never had them this good before! The Shrimp and Oyster Po Boy was absolutely delicious, perfect spiciness, and the roll was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We went for lunch on a rainy day and there was a nice crowd. NYC vaccine mandates have put a damper on those of us that are not vaccinated. Nassau county is now our go to dining region. Made reservations ( outdoors available only ) on a early Saturday afternoon. Seated promptly, friendly waiter Peter quickly expedited our food order. Octopus appetizer was a bit spicy for me yet still delicious. Kale/quinoa salad was a nice cool refreshing dish for the palate after wards. The burger with fries was filling. The restaurant got increasing busy as the day turned into night. We would have loved to have stayed longer, enjoying a little sweet treat under a beautiful night sky. This is a gem. The service and food cannot be beat. Pete, the waiter, suggested the lamb chops wu style and wow, really was incredible. My wife had the lobster capellini, I had the halibut. Split a great bottle of Honig Cabernet, and finished with the most amazing bread pudding. Pete was not only extremely knowledgeable about the seafood and where it was sourced, but laid out the meal like it was a dining experience. Can't wait to come back. Well done brass rail. Where do I begin.... We had an 8:30pm reservation to celebrate Valentines Day dinner. It took 25+ minutes to be seated despite the fact that the table we ultimately sat at was already turned over and ready for the majority of that time. Service was unfriendly and gave a weird remark when we requested non-alcoholic beverages. Appetizers were decent and came out quickly (one positive!) Here is where things go really downhill. Our entrees come out and we requested another round of drinks at that point in time. The waitress literally never returned to our table thereafter. Service: -No check in to see if we were content with the food or needed anything (we did!) -Never returned with the drinks until we flagged down the maître d' after being frustrated with having empty water glasses for the duration of the entree (WTF!). They also promised that they would take care of the round of drinks, and then proceeded to put them on our bill anyway. -We had to practically beg for our check to leave, again because apparently to this establishment we as customers do not exist once the main course is served Food: The food was ok. I ordered the steak au poivre and found the peppercorn flavor to be overwhelming/unbalanced. My fiancé ordered the skirt steak which I thought was a bit better. At this price level we were somewhat disappointed. Needless to say we didn't have a great experience and will be recommending our network to steer clear for one of the zillion other great restaurants in the area. read more

This place made it through the pandemic and during that time offered family take out options that were so dang good and reasonably priced. I'm so glad they survived the storm and are back in action. There have been a few menu changes and price increases but that to be expected given life at the moment. Prior to coming here, after reading some of the negative reviews, I was quite worry today about our first visit may turning into a disaster. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! My worry became totally unnecessary! We had a very pleasant lunch here today. The food was all so delightful and scrumptious. We ordered crusted halibut with lightly sautéed spinach and baby boy Choi, linguini in clam sauce, fish&chip, salad and burger. My halibut was super fresh, lightly pan seared. I absolutely loved they prepared the fish in light olive oil rather than thick butter! The food temperature was so welcoming. WAIT! I was so indulging in my lovely halibut....All the sudden, my pallets alarmed me with some "special protein" a long soft yet strong hair! It was mingled with spinaches! I could not believe it! I wasn't upset or anything in a negative way. I kept quite and liberated the hair from spinaches. I put it on the table and continued on my pleasure pallets trip.... WAIT! AGAIN, a tiny protein jumped out into my mouth again:(((( now I had a bit struggling if I should tell the hostess. The hostess was not around at the moment, the assistant waiter came forward and without a question, he politely took the plate away and offered me a new replacement. Wow, that's classic! And he was very detail-oriented because he saw I scrambled all the crusts on to the side of my plate so he asked if I did not like the crust he could give me a halibut without crusts. I liked that suggestion. After 10minutes, my nice warm new halibut came back to me.... I tried my family member s fish n chip, salads, a bite of burger and a little linguini in clam sauce too. They were all so flavorful yet not greasy! I am a super health conscious weirdo:))) I DO NOT like anything that s greasy, salty or sugary. And Brass Rail was the perfect match! Thank you! The service was on the spot. No more no less. Just perfect! Too bad I did not ask our hostess s name but she was courteous and refreshing. Thank you!
