We held a very special work event at Barney's for about 20 people to celebrate an award received. We wanted an American historic restaurant to align with the US award we were receiving and thought of Barneys. Barney's is a restaurant for 133 years - historic - see the photos. When there look for Barneys belt on the wall. Christina and team created a special menu - cocktails and passed hors devoures (sp?). Then choice of salad and entree (duck, chicken, filet mignon, or salmon) with a delicious dessert. They opened the restaurant on a Tuesday night for us. Trying to pick a place for brunch I saw this place and was like this looks perfect! No wifi which is probably a good thing but not good for a child lol, he got over it. Our food was good. Service was good though she brought waffles out instead of pancakes for our boy, not a big deal except for our picky boy lol who was like yucky! Despite the fact he loves waffles at home, as long as they are ego waffles (lemme roll my eyes) they looked amazing here but our 5 year old did not care lol. This ambiance of this restaurant is immaculate. Was there on a snowy winter night, they had the fire going and it was decorated for a cozy winter dinner. The prices are totally extreme so it is a special occasion type of meal. The service was great though we had 3 different wait staff throughout the night, unsure of which was infact ours. I drive past Barney's frequently and love the front porch country feel it exudes. The Locust Valley section of Long Island reminds me of sleepy New England towns, or places where Hallmark movies are filmed. Thanks to a gift card lingering from my birthday, I made a reservation and finally made it there. The beauty of life on Long Island is that you can escape for a meal, a day or a weekend to a completely different place. Barney's in Locust Valley is definitely one of those places. THE GROWS: Barney's offers a price fixe dinner on certain weeknights, including the night we were there. We were never told about it nor presented with the addendum to the menu which highlighted it. Offerings like that get new customers in the door to sample the food and service; it makes customers uncomfortable to ask for something that is already advertised on the restaurant website yet not shared with staff who work with you. We selected items off that regular menu/specials, but many people are hesitant to go out due to rising costs, so being open about this deal would entice people to come in and most likely return. Parking is on-street and while it isn't a busy street, you will definitely need to leave some time to secure parking, cross the street, and be on the lookout for cars driving too fast on that section of the road. THE GLOWS: There are two beautifully decorated rooms to dine in (as well as a back room where private parties can be held), in addition to their outdoor seating area (weather permitting). As soon as sat, we were given water and fresh baked bread with fresh churned butter. Our server reviewed the specials, many of the items being what we ordered. The short ribs were served with crispy onions and a large portion of mashed potatoes. My red snapper was a memorable dish: pan-seared snapper served with artichokes, olives, capers, roasted red peppers and these little polenta bites that were to die for! A large slice of key lime pie rounded out our meal. Barney's isn't around the corner for some on Long Island, but you are guaranteed a beautiful drive through the winding roads of that section of the north shore. Returned to Barney's after many years and was not disappointed. The decor remains the same, which is to say charming country inn, with a roaring fire adding to the experience on a chilly night. We had the price fix and were satisfied with the selection. We started with the gnocchi appetizer. The gnocchi were pillowey and delicious and my husbands calamari crispy and a generous portion. For entrees we had the chicken paillard which was nicely prepared, light with a bright sauce and seemingly home made fettuccine. My husbands duck was beautifully cooked, crispy skinned, and medium rare. While the menu was not adventurous, the food was all well prepared, beautifully presented and priced well. This is the first review that I've ever given BEFORE I go to a restaurant. Yes before. I'm leaving now to go for Easter dinner with my wife and daughter. I'm rolling the dice. This restaurant used to be a local treasure. I went many times 10-15 years ago. Then it went down hill. When one skims the reviews here it's clear that this is what I would call a restaurant roulette scenario. Could be a wonderful dining experience OR you might suffer PTSD from sub par food, a long wait and some dimwad manager guy likely named Bif looking down his bent nose at you. Anyhow. I'm going back. Always & only, absolutely fabulous! Last night, we took friends in from the city for a couple of days and we all indulged in lobsters, which were steamed to perfection! We enjoyed sitting outside on the porch and ordered a couple of perfectly mixed cocktails and the kids had refreshing homemade lemonades with their freshly fried calamari! It was so delicately fried and so quickly devoured, we had to order another 1, which disappeared in rapid succession. Our waitresses were Arie from Albania and another very gracious American lady, who's name I forgot to ask, but who was equally amazing and hospitable. We had a fabulous, relaxing, fun time over a memorable, Locust Valley lobster dinner and it made me feel grateful to have handed over the cooking reigns! read more

Had dinner with friends at Barney's in Locust Valley, NY. I ordered duck, the breast was overcooked & charred on the outside. Sent it back. Came out the second time literally raw & cold in the middle. Sent it back. By that time my companions were almost done with their dinner. I choose not to have it done a third time nor order another dinner as I didn't want to be sitting there eating when everyone else was finished. The owner, after awhile, came to the table and proceeded to berate me loudly in the middle of the dining room for sending the food back. He created a scene in front of the other dinners. The purpose of that was what? He looked so ridiculous. So much hostility from him. He went on to state his chef was trained by a Michelin chef & this never happens. Mind you my friend had the same dinner & hers was prepared perfectly while mine was not ate-able twice. The owner never apologized & was clearly angry at me!!!! How dare I send the food back. He did eventually remove the charge for my dinner from the bill & right before we left gave me a gift certificate to come back, which I will not because his treatment of his guests was unacceptable. The issue with the food is one thing & if was just that I would not have left a review because I understand things happen. It was the owner's abusive tirade & behavior that was the problem and so unprofessional. read more

Upon showing up ON TIME for our Valentines dinner reservation, the manager Cathy told us that we would be seated in a barn that was adjacent to the main restaurant/dining area I did vocalize my concerns about this & Cathy readily told me that I should be thankful because it's a lovely room & that is where they have all of their private parties due to the fact that there was a fireplace & a beyond cozy environment. Well that could not be further from the truth. The room was void of ambiance, extremely hot (in fact I was told that the people that were placed at our table got up & left the minute they entered the room), service was non existent waiting well over 15 minutes to get our drinks, bread, butter etc,. In addition when our dinner's arrived all the food was cold. The short rib entree was not even a meal the portion it was that of an hors d'ourve amount. My fiancé had to return his coffee because it was burnt & undrinkable ! End result, one of the worst Valentine's Day experience ever........ all for $600.00 read more

Parking is a problem. The restaurant doesn't have a parking lot. When we got our food we were warned the plates were hot. However the food was only warm almost cool. This is a wonderful restaurant with excepriinal food and even better service. The lack of parking is compensated by fast and efficient Valet service. As good as it is as a restaurant, it is even better as a an event venue. Mike and his wife take a personal interest in ensuring their guests have the very best event. Their attention to detail and warm caring attitude alleviates a lot of the tensjon associated with plannung an event. They hosted my son's wedding and everyone who came marveled at the charm of the restaurant and the marvelous service. read more

I do not recommend this place for Valentine's Day. I have read several reviews where the same thing happened to others. I made a reservation earlier in the week, but was not informed of a prix-fix. It's the same menu, only they do not indicate the prices. The bill ended up being $300 bill for 2. The food and ambience was quite good, but I felt taken advantage of. It was a good meal, but I could have used the same money for a round trip to Mexico. To boot, they were short-staffed to the point that we were waiting quite some time for assistance. While the meal was memorable, charging those prices you could properly staff enough professional waiters. There were not enough waiters on hand, and the ones around were young kids, that were helping that night. On a side note, a waitress gave us a glass of wine, after my girlfriend said a "glass of water". Then she said she would not charge us to make up for the mishap, but then it was still on the bill. That said, the place and meal was very good. I recommend being up-front about the pricing and providing proper service to match the extremely high fine-dining prices, if you are going to charge that much extra for a holiday. read more

Such a refined, yet cozy atmosphere with a crackling fireplace. It's like having dinner in your wealthy aunt's cozy home. Gold coast understated perfection. Delicious salad. The best crème brûlée I've ever had. They are doing some kind of crème brûlée magic in the kitchen! Clams Oreganata, imho, were too large for my liking and could use a bit of top crisping under the broiler. Overall, it is such a treat to dine here. A friend of mine was raving about Barney's in Locust Valley so I my wife and I decided to check it out on a Friday night. The vibe in the room was so relaxed as we sat down in front of a crackling fire and opened our meal with a cold martini and probably the best tuna appetizer I ever had. But when it comes to a main course, I have three words: GET THE DUCK! Crispy and perfectly cooked, this is comfort food at its finest. My Wife's short ribs were amazing too, falling off the bone into a pool of mashed potatoes. Definitely a perfect and decadent meal for a cold night. We dined at BARNEYS RESTAURANT, Locust Valley, New York for the first time on Saturday evening April 27, 2024. DON'T order the scallops. At $47.00 for the scallop entre I received 5 scallops (no larger than a quarter). The menu listed the scallops as SEA SCALLOPS. When I requested to speak with the manager/owner I was told that he left for the evening. Aria, our waitress, who was very nice, suggested that I call the following Wednesday and speak with the owners--Michael and his wife Christina. When I spoke with Christina on May 1, 2024 and told her of my disappointing size and amount of scallops, she said she would discuss with her husband Michael and she would call me back. She never called back. Two weeks later (on May 17th) I left another message (with Cathy) to have Christina contact me--she never did call back. On my final call to the restaurant, I spoke with Michael (owner). I found him to be curt and rude. He said come back to dine there and "he'll make it right". When I asked him what that meant, he just repeated come back and then he hung up. Overall, Barney's has good food and a pleasant atmosphere. However, the portion size of scallops for the $47.00 price, I believe to be excessive. Furthermore, there is no excuse for the owners to be dismissive to a customer. read more

After extensively searching for cozy romantic restaurants on Long Island, I decided to go with Barney's. The reviews weren't great on Yelp but they seemed much better on trip advisor and google. The place was off the beaten path, low ceilings, fire place and seemed different than the flashy places I've recently visited such as rare 650. I went on the website prior to our visit and noticed that Thursday night was a prix fixe menu. For $35 per person you can get a three course meal, so with only 3 stars, I figured I'd give this a shot. We arrived and instantly noticed some locals at the bar area and then a cozy room with a fireplace. I believe the room had between 5-7 tables and almost all were filled. It was too close for comfort during covid and honestly made me very nervous at the close quarters. Our waitress came over and handed us menus, which I noticed right away were not prix fixe menus. I asked about the prix fixe and she said there was not one. I explained the website stated that 3 nights per week there were prix fixe and she said she would check. Sure enough she came back w the prix fixe menu which has the same items as regular menu which exception of lamb and steak. I noticed that no one else had the prix fixe menu and all of the people were ordering the same items as us and paying full price! Gnocchi $16, short rib $36 and dessert $16. We paid $35 for al 3.... so either shame on an uneducated diner or shame on the restaurant for not be forthcoming, you decide. The appetizers we chose were gnocchi and crab cake, not cakes. The crab cake was good, nicely seasoned but the gnocchi was under seasoned, needed some salt. We both had short ribs w root vegetables and mashed potatoes. The short rib was delicious as well as the root vegetables but again the mashed potatoes had no salt or flavoring. Then there was dessert, we ordered "flourless chocolate cake". I took one bite and instantly tasted crushed nuts, not good because I am Allergic to tree nuts. I instantly spit out food into napkin and started rinsing my mouth out. I called waiter over, young guy, and asked about nuts and he said yes they're crushed in. I said I was allergic and he said "oh". I mean an apology for not disclosing would've been nice or maybe offering a different dessert? Usually I always ask if something is made with nuts but an advertised chocolate cake? Someone recently wrote the music doesn't match the atmosphere and they are right. It seems as though they are trying to meet the needs of the bar crowd w Tom petty and mystic River but it's supposed to be a classy place w linen and a fire place. I'm all for classic rock but it wasn't appropriate for the atmosphere. Jazz, something soft would work instead. Someone also wrote the place was freezing, we sat by a window and fireplace and I was wearing a sweater and found it to be comfortable (I'm also anemic which usually means I'm cold). The bathroom was freezing though. Overall, charming little place w pretty good food. Definitely wouldn't pay the normal prices but the $35 prix fixe was appropriate for the food given. read more

This beautiful little restaurant has been here for a very long time but I had never been there until a couple of my foodie friends invited me to go long. The food was very good with charming ambience . If you know the food was delicious, it's very very pricey. I will come back the next time I get a big commission check. read more

New owner and Barney''s is revived!!! Went for Christmas Eve. Prices Fix menu was very nice and good choices. Pan seared fois gras appetizer was delicious. Creamy and fresh tasting. Crispy skin salmon was cooked perfectly, served with asparagus, corn relish and a corn cake. Rack of lamb cooked to a beautiful medium with a butternut purée and roasted brussel sprouts. Star entree was the Long Island duck. Breast cooked medium melted in your mouth. Leg and thigh were delicious as well. I've had duck in dozens of restaurants and this was arguably the best I've had. Nice atmosphere, new owner was there and sounds like he has great plans for the place. Highly recommend!! Can't wait to go back for a brunch. read more

Today I understood why I voted for Obama. I could sum it up in one word -Discrimination!! The dictionary describes it as -Bias, prejudice, favoritism, -that is exactly what I felt as I attended Long Island restaurant week at - Barney's in locust Valley, long Island. Mind you the food is very good however, I will never go back!!!-The owner/host - whatever his role is the reason why! I noticed he warmly welcomed other customers to the restaurant and we did not receive the same warm greeting. -I did not pay attention to that; understanding how crazy restaurant week can be. During dinner again he had many chances to make us feel welcome just like he was doing with his other dinner patrons with a simple - Are you enjoying your dinner? But he choose did to acknowledge us verbally. As we left, I thanked our waitress for our lovely dinner- again as the Owner/Host stood RIGHT THERE- he could not even say - Have a good night or Thank you for coming. Four of us chose Barneys for a special night out to celebrate our anniversaries. The best part of our dinner was the valet parking. We understand that these are difficult times to find help but perhaps reservations shouldn't be taken beyond the ability to provide service. We sat for at least 20 minutes before anyone approached our table. We had to ask for water 3 times, it took another 15 minutes to order cocktails. Still no water. We had to ask for bread. 3 servers took turns waiting on us but no one seemed able to follow through on our requests. The maitre'd sat at the bar talking to patrons while the wait staff ran around the restaurant . We ordered arugula salad that was soggy. We sat with empty glasses for the rest of our meal, when we asked for water a waitress gave us a snarky remark. Still the maitre'd sat at the bar oblivious to the chaos around him. We overheard the couple behind us whose experience could have been much better, still waiting for their credit card to be returned. Finally, our entrees arrived; sandy scallops and tough salty shrimp! The duck was mediocre. The shining star of the meal was the short rib entree. We were so dissatisfied that we dared not order dessert and weren't even asked if we wanted any. What a disappointing night! read more

Oh man. This was our go to for extra special dinners. We haven't been in awhile, and won't be back unless reviews shown more positive consistency. Food ok when for the cost it should be excellent. Service slow-however restaurants deserve some grace during this time of employee shortage. Our waiter did try and you could see he was busy but they needed more bus staff. The Pasta dish was over cooked with watery tasteless sauce and was sent back (which I never do). Halibut and Foie Gras overcooked. Bananas foster was actually served in a crepe, so not what was expected. A disappointing evening for a special occasion. read more
