Okay. So I decided to write this review while the experience was still fresh in my mind. IE, I'm actually still sitting here at Bradbury's. In Madison for the day, I decided to check out one of those "fabulous little coffee houses" everyone talks about when referring to Madison's kitschy little venues.
Here's the straight scoop. While yes, the nearly 360 degree view of the corner of Dayton and Hamilton is comforting to look at (especially on a chilling, snowy winter's day) through their floor to ceiling windows, the place is only slightly larger than what I imagine a very large prison cell to be. Seriously, this place is TINY.
SO. Don't expect to have a private conversation with anyone, on your phone or otherwise. And don't expect to be able to lose yourself in the comfort of an easy chair for the afternoon. First, because they don't have any comfortable seats. Second. Because there's nowhere to lose yourself to. It's pretty hard to block anyone out given the size of the place.
NOW. If community is what you're looking for. To strike up a conversation with a friendly stranger or finally say hello to that cute regular you've been exchanging glances with for the past few weeks, well, the ambiance lends itself.
Couple things to watch for.
One. Cleanliness. Somehow, someone left an OPEN condom wrapper under the one solo table in the place. Hm....weird. The guy behind the counter was more than happy to sweep it up, but I'd rather it wouldn't have been there at all.
Also, my teaspoon and little teabag plate were of questionable cleanliness. At best, they'd both seen better days. At worst, there was downright stuck food on them.
Also, there was no iced tea ready, it being winter and all. But still. To me that's like saying a restaurant won't serve Coke in the winter. I ain't drinking it outside. Right?
So, we had to McGyver an iced tea by making a hot tea and then transferring it to a plastic to-go cup full of ice. I normally wouldn't grumble about this if it weren't for the fact that none of the lids they had available fit the cup.
So, my tea and straw just sat there on my table, patiently waiting for me to pull a klutz move and spill it all over my iPhone and laptop.
They said they only had one size of lid and that it "should" fit. But...it didn't. I tried. And I promise. It didn't.
On the upside, they were very nice. I went in to use the bathroom and when I came out my green tea was there waiting for me at my table. Dirty spoon and all.
And a little later, a guy came in with no money and had to leave stat and he said, "I potentially could come back and pay." And the staff just said, "what do you need?" And gave him a coffee free of charge. I know NO places in Chicago that would do that. Probably not even Starbucks (even if you're a regular).
Now, I didn't try the "legendary" crepes. But I did watch the guy make one and it did look very good. Of course, given the cleanliness issue, I was remiss to try one.
So, there you have it. As far as I'm concerned, it does in a pinch, but I wouldn't go back. Period.
And in terms of the price issue, they are NOT expensive. My tea was like $1.60. So, that's definitely not a concern. read more
