A couple years back I was riding my bike to my ex's apartment. As I was riding, my front tire blew…read moreand I lost control and fell. There were a bunch of people hanging out on the porch of a house and one guy ran up to me to see if I was okay. His name was Tim. He took my bike to his house and said he could fix it. He got my information down and said I could pick it up tomorrow. The next day I stopped by and he charged me only for the parts and sent me on my way. Since then, Tim has grown his business and moved into the beautiful new space that the community knows as Neutral Cycle. His business may have grown larger, but Tim has managed to keep the same level of care and personal service. From the friendly staff to the great prices, Neutral Cycle has affirmed its role in the Champaign-Urbana community as its premier bike shop. I am leaving for Chicago within 10 days, but I promised Tim I would buy a bike from him before leaving. Tim and his staff have helped me countless times with my previous bike (like that tire popping incident) and were very gracious to offer me great savings on a bike rental when my car was in the repair shop for over a month. Even if I were to disregard those personal experiences I've had with this shop, I would still choose to purchase from this shop because this is a fantastic locally owned business ran by a passionate, friendly, and knowledgeable staff, providing excellent service for an excellent price.

Have tried the other bike shops in town and Neutral Cycle is by far the best LBS in…read moreChampaign/Urbana. The staff is friendly, helpful and understand how important riding is to people and are eager to get you going again. They treat every person like they matter. I was in getting a wheel trued one week and when I returned other next they remembered my name and were super helpful. A super nice touch was the $1 off coupons they hand out for the coffee shop next door so you can get some brew while you wait. A great LBS that has won my loyal business.

Okay. I see many people don't care for Bruce's manner. He is a bit of a curmudgeon and the place is…read moreuntidy with all those bike repairs going on. Not a problem for me. He sells good bikes at fair prices. And there is no better person I know of for bike repairs (though he gets a little surly if you are unwilling to learn how to change a tire i.e. put in a new inner-tube. He taught me in five minutes.) And he is great to talk to if you want to learn about features and don't let your ego get in the way--it is worth it. I have not bought high end bikes here but have purchased two mid-range Bianchi bikes from him in the last two decades. I love love love these bikes. Strong, smooth riding, intuitive bikes that last and last (which I am sure the thieves who took them did not even consider--should have listened to Bruce about locking up even in the garage). I will listen this time. I have no doubt the high end bikes are also among best in class--this guy has found his calling in bicycles. He owns four. He says "That's enough for now." I no longer live here but I am planning to buy from Bruce again anyway. Will put the bike in my car and take it back to Chicago knowing it will be great on the roads and the Lakeshore bike path. Oh and they are pretty too, if one cares for that sort of thing. Couple notes--I know Yelp says he is usually closed but he has regular (short) hours 10am - 2:30pm weekdays. Better to call ahead to make sure he is there--he is a man who works at his own discretion some days. He will wait, however, if you call and he knows you are coming even if he has lunch plans. Also, there is (30 minutes) free parking between signs in front of the building. Metered parking is 50 cents an hour and there are usually spots right there.

I bought a bike from Bruce back in the early 1980s, and foolishly left it behind during an…read moreinternational move. I was back in Urbana for a day and thought i might check in. Say hello, and consider a new bike. The shop is not in condition to open. There is junk on the floor one would have to step over starting 3 feet into the shop and going back forever. The sign on the door made mention of a pandemic order from three years ago. I asked at other nearby businesses, and was told he'd had some health issues. I hope he can find his way back to health and work, because he does know about bicycles. I'm thinking of you, Bruce!

In the past, I had been someone who had purchased bikes from Wal-Mart or Target, but I wanted something nicer that would last longer. After doing my due diligence researching bikes and prices I went to Durst during one of their 'Sidewalk Sales.' The staff member who helped me throughout the process was incredibly knowledge and answered each and every one of my numerous questions. He didn't lose patience after I had test rode my 8th bike since arriving and did not pressure me to make a purchase. After many questions and test rides, I finally decided on a bike. While waiting to check out-it was incredibly busy-the owner chatted with me about stopping in for a free tune up after a month and gave me some tips about safety precautions, getting the bike registered, etc. It was nice that he took an interest in his customers as I wasn't the only one who spoke to during the wait. It's been about 8 months since I purchased it and I still love it and have had no issues. I've called or stopped in with questions about doing some tune ups or upgrades and the staff are more than willing to offer advice and assistance. I highly recommend Durst Cycle.

Once I got there, lugging my bike with me, I am told that they do not have any such parts in stock. When I mentioned my earlier phone call, the owner became aggressively rude, all but calling me a liar. "I said no such thing!" All he had to do was appologize for the inconvenience, maybe adding that there may have been a miscommunication. But instead he tries to gaslight me. Not cool. Stay clear of this nasty place.
