I get a kick out of reading the hyperventilating reviews from evidently very fragile snowflakes who have never dealt with small business owners. Sure the guy is a bit quirky and has pure social skills. No he's not your Starbucks barista or Nordstrom's sales staff. Get over it! He does effing good work at a very fair price and he's essentially the best bet to get leather repair done in this town. And as for frustration with timelines and updates, when you visit his shop you'll understand why - they are completely overwhelmed. Again, it's a husband and wife running a very small business. I had a very good experience. I took in a leather jacket with a torn pocket and asked if it could e repaired. He said yes. Took my info and said he would text when done. A week later he texted to advise it was done. His hours of operation and that it was cash only. I asked the amount which he texted me. 10 minutes later I was walking out with my jacket. I have been bringing shoes here for probably 10 years. from work boots to mother in laws dress shoes , all have been done with excellence. I live in Indianapolis and bring shoes here. Yes, there are shops in Indiana but none as good. Their repairs didn't last so I brought them here and he repaired them correctly and they are still good after 8 years. JJ's is worth the drive and his service time has a quick turn around! And repair is a money saving option considering the cost of new and trying to find something that will last. read more

I took you two pairs of redwing boots to this business to have them resouled and re-healed , the work looks fantastic. The guy did a great job at it. He put brand new bottoms on them re-stitched all the areas that needed to be done and even did some cosmetic work on them. This guy learned from a business that used to be in town on campus so when he mentioned that I knew he was good at what he was doing, and I understood that it meant that he would do a quality job. No complaints at all absolutely a fantastic job. I would not consider going to heal to toe if you want your boots repaired they will simply glue on a new soul or heel if you are wanting them resoled or re-healed it's better that you take them to a real shoe repair shop where they can actually sew the bottom back on to the boots. read more

About 10ish years ago, my daughter gave me these great Coach loafers that she had gotten new, at a Thrift store. I have loved them and worn them carefully up until 2014 when the soles suddenly came loose on both pairs simultaneously :( I kept the shoes, cuz I am a keeper and I loved them, hoping I would find something to fix them with. I have never encountered such bad treatment from an establishment. I dropped off three pairs of shoes and JJ couldn't give me a price, couldn't give me an estimated time of completion (other than minimum of four weeks) AND said he wouldn't clean/polish the shoes after he put new soles on because he's not a cleaning person. I called the next day to tell him that I was going to pick the shoes up because we couldn't wait that long for the new soles. I asked him what time they closed and he said look on my website...I told him that I was driving and he literally asked me if I wanted him to put my pretty little bag outside of the door so that I could pick the shoes up at my convenience! I brought a 10 year old pair of Teva sandals to these guys hoping they might be able to repair the soles. I myself had made a whole series of inept and bungled repairs of the souls, so there was leftover glue stuck on pieces of rubber and the like. Frankly, I didn't hold out much hope for a repair. This is extraordinarily durable and high quality footwear that I have used almost daily for a decade. I was a little apprehensive about the relatively high cost for the repair, but I knew these $150 sandals were worth it. The job was a few days late but well worth the wait. The workmanship and care put into this repair by JJs was like something I've never seen before. Seriously. These things look and feel like brand new. Champaign-urbana is lucky to have a craftsman's craftsman like JJ!! By the way, the woman in front of me tried to cheat the guy out of a dollar on the repair and he wasn't having have any of it. This was a terrible experience. I took in my bag to get fixed and he said they also did leather bag repairs. I left it and it took them a month to repair a pouch. After calling me and telling me my bag was ready, I checked their hours and when I went in, they had a note on the door and said they closed early. This happened 4 times after that and finally I was able to see my purse. They did a pathetic job. They sewed it with a sowing machine and the string penetrated and went in and out of the outer leather covering of the bag. I was extremely disappointed because I loved that bag but it is ruined now. JJ's is not the best cobbler I have ever used, but in the Champaign-Urbana area, they are the best we've got. In short: they are slow and not exactly inexpensive, but they do really good work and can usually save any footwear you have got. I had a pair of winter boots that I thought were goners. They were cracked and stained, and the zippers on both were separating from the shoe. I took them in, and while it did take them a solid month to repair, I basically got returned a brand new pair of shoes. For new soles, reconstituted zippers, and general refurbishment I paid approximately $25.00 as quoted when I brought them in. It felt expensive, but these boots haven't looked so good in years and I think they added at least another two years onto their walking lives. The store however, is a jam-packed mess and at first they thought they had lost my shoes altogether because they do not tag or label them aside from repair price. The staff is also not particularly friendly either, but again, they do good work. Also, they are conveniently located across the street from the Amtrak station in downtown Champaign--easy to get to if you do not have a car. NOTE: this is a cash-only establishment, so come prepared with bills when you pick up your shoes. read more

After searching HIGH and LOW for someone in this godforsaken town to fix my (far-too) expensive Italian Leather Sandals after the toe strap came loose, I finally was recommended to JJ's... I am so glad. The work he did was wonderful, only cost me $8! AND they will last many many years because of it. I took my shoes in during Mid-August and they were done by the end of August. I find this very reasonable because I had the soles of my favorite pair of oxfords re-done. The sole on the right shoe was completely cracked. I did not think that it could be re-done, but the workers did an excellent job. They put a leather sole over it and leveled the bottoms out. The cost of the job was $38. It was a little steep because the shoes weren't even leather, but I still paid for it because I love those shoes. read more

The man who runs this place is the most miserable person I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. What is he doing in a customer facing role? The one pair of shoes they did for me, a simple strap fix, took a month to fix and it sucked. I could have done it better myself. Today I took in a sandal (he's the only shoe repair person in town--so I had little choice) I needed a simple gluing down of the insert (figured he could at least do that much). He told me October 10th!!!!! As I batted my eyes for 2 seconds in disbelief he rudely barked, "Well, what'll be, the clock is ticking?" I'll say! his time is running out for sure. I was kind of taken aback by the prickly and unneccesarily rude behavior of the staff member who helped me and I thought that he was just having an off day. However, when I spoke to a couple of people at work it seems that is the norm here. They just treat their customers poorly. That said, it seems that they do good work. I was very uneasy about leaving my nice boots as the store was disorganized and cluttered. The man was helpful in that he suggested that instead of replacing the broken zippers (which would cost a lot of money) that he just sew them back together. That's about the only thing he was helpful with. He quoted me a price and told me that the boots would be ready in two weeks. After 2 and a half weeks I went back to pick up my boots. I gave the guy the ticket and it took him 10 minutes to figure out where he had put them! Turns out they were stuffed in a box with other shoes and he informed me that he hadn't even started working on them. I think he understood that I was seriously annoyed and angry and he had them finished by the next day. The quality of the work is only somewhat acceptable and I am sure I'll need to get them fixed again in the near future. Whatever you do, please do not bring any items to be repaired at here. I dropped a shoe off for repair on Memorial Day weekend, followed up 3 weeks later, and he said he'd lost it. When I asked how he could lose a shoe, he told me he had "bigger things to worry about" than my lost shoe. He asked for my contact info, never called me back, and after 2 months of back and forth, I asked for a refund. He obliged and when I told him I didn't appreciate his lack of follow up, he told me "Watch your tone, lady" and hung up on me. When I called back, he said, "Go make yourself feel better by giving me a bad review on the internet." He admitted to not caring what customers think, so I don't have any qualms about letting everyone with half a brain know to avoid this place like the plague. read more

JJs did a great job and I feel better supporting small local businesses. These types of shops are becoming few and far between. I had a pair of Frye ankle boots that needed new soles. When I dropped the shoes off, the man was very friendly, knowledgeable, and showed me some different options. He finished the job about 3 days earlier than expected and the result was excellent! Cost was $32. Check or cash only. They look just like new, and actually, the soles he put on are probably even better than the originals (the originals didn't cover the whole bottom of the shoe--just the heel and balls of the feet). I brought a pair of dance shoes to JJ to have rubber soles put on. I've had this done before at Heel to Toe in Urbana. JJ was equally quick (about a week for each business) but JJ was less expensive and much friendlier. I dropped the shoes off with his assistant and picked up from JJ himself. There are other reviews that note that JJ loses shoes; in my case my shoes were seemingly mis-filed by an assistant but they were located with only a little fuss. So I'd say that if you're ok with minor disorganization, the work is well done. I'll definitely go back to have additional shoe repair and leather work done, but I will allow a little extra time just in case things are harder to find at pickup. read more

Probably one of the worst businesses I've ever dealt with. Brought an old pair of sneakers to be in to be resoled with some hesitation. He said that he could do it using a flat, grippy material that he even took out and showed me. When I came to pick up my shoes, he had not only used a different material, but he had done a very poor job putting them on. What really killed me was that he had used a sold that put a heel on them. Sneakers with a heel? Are they out of their mind? Furthermore, when I asked him if he could take the heel off, he said he'd rather throw them away and that I had wasted his time and material before hanging up on me. I called him back for him to just hang up on me again! I work in the service industry and he is NOT providing a service. Judging by other's reviews on other places, I'm amazed that he can still be in business. This store needs to be shut down before they ruin other's shoes! read more

JJ's Shoe Repair is a disgraceful business. The owner is unpleasant and acts as if he is actually annoyed by you and the job you are requiring him to do for a pretty high fee. But, my experience with JJ's goes far beyond an unpleasant conversation. The proprietor actually lost my two pairs of sandals I brought to him for repair. Both pairs of sandals were purchased in Italy and averaged $100 each. The sandals were dropped off in early June and he gave me a pick-up date (weeks later) of: 6/22/17. I came in early July to collect the order, and he could not locate my items. He said that he would look for them and call me once he found them. No call came. I then returned to the store a week later, to no success. This was repeated 2-3 more times, all along he and his assistant never attempted to communicate with me and kept "blowing smoke" in my face. Last time I set foot in to his store, he actually had the audacity to insinuate that I might have picked up the shoes and I am doing this on purpose !!! This man is not only shady, he is rude. Do not go there if you want your shoes fixed. Instead, try the "Heel to Toe" place in Urbana. Wonderfull people and great service! read more

In a few weeks he ordered new soles and got them resoled. He even conditioned them without me even asking and now they look better then they did before! Do not ever go to JJ's to get ANYTHING done. All I wanted was an extra hole punched in the straps of my tango shoes, and they told me to come back in 2 weeks. When I came back on the date they told me, the shoes had NEVER been touched. They then told me to come back at the end of the day, and when I said that I could not, they told me to wait around for 30 minutes. I asked them to just give me the shoes since they could not do a 30 minute job in 2 weeks time, and they got angry at ME! They never once offered a discount or apologized and were exceptionally rude. I got a call on the same day in the afternoon that my handbags were fixed. I picked them up the next day and the quality of their work was decent. I would definitely use them again. read more
