These guys did me a solid (on their own time!), were very kind, and gave great advice.

Very hidden gem in Urbana. Extremely knowledgeable and quick diagnosing AND fixing the issue! So…read morereasonably priced too!! Sam is one of the few can work on Ebikes and scooters and just about anything with a wheel and motor! Highly recommend 10 plus stars!!!! It's like visiting an old hometown bike shop from the 70z complete with aquarium, shop dog, chickens and turkeys to entertain you. Oh and if you'd like some fresh egg, raw honey, homemade jam it's in the shed in back of the shop! Just ask Sam where find all the goodies

Not too happy. I paid $120 to have my bike fixed up earlier this year. It had a bent back wheel,…read moreneeded the brakes fixed up, and the chain was skipping on the gears. Upon receiving the bike back from Baker's, I had to immediately correct crooked handlebars for some reason. The back tire had a slight wobble to it, and the chain still skipped (actually, the chain/gears were never fixed or addressed, but to be fair it may not have been made clear upfront that this was a problem that needed fixing). After about six months, the back wheel was totally bent again and the brakes were no longer working. My bike doesn't take any abuse - I just ride it a few blocks around the neighborhood daily. I think the biggest problem here was that Baker's may have been keen on billing for their own labor but they didn't buy new parts where needed. Maybe buying replacement parts would have resulted in less billable hours for the shop, or maybe they were just trying to save me money upfront and it really turned out to be the wrong call, I dunno. I thought for sure they would just replace the bent tire instead of trying to bend it back. Any person who test rode the bike would have realized the tire still had a wobble to it even after their repair work. Maybe a new wheel would have been overall more expensive, but that would have been fine by me to spend more and have things actually repaired instead of spending $120 to get partial function for a few months then be back where I started. I hate to give such a low review to local family-owned business, but I just really regret not spending the money on replacement parts and doing the work myself.

I bought a bike from Bruce back in the early 1980s, and foolishly left it behind during an…read moreinternational move. I was back in Urbana for a day and thought i might check in. Say hello, and consider a new bike. The shop is not in condition to open. There is junk on the floor one would have to step over starting 3 feet into the shop and going back forever. The sign on the door made mention of a pandemic order from three years ago. I asked at other nearby businesses, and was told he'd had some health issues. I hope he can find his way back to health and work, because he does know about bicycles. I'm thinking of you, Bruce!

Just. Don't. Bother…read more I knew ahead of time that Bruce was known for being really abrasive. I didn't care as long as he was able to fix my bike. He mostly did... eventually. His hours are horrendous (3hrs a day) and he's not always there during the posted times (happened to me twice!). As everyone knows, he's intentionally rude. I called after not hearing anything for over a week and he rattled off some excuse and hung up on me. When I finally went in to pick up my bike he had already done extra work that we hadn't discussed and charged me for it. And the pièce de résistance...the front brake is now screwed up. He mentioned it was hard to take off and there are some tool marks on it. I honestly don't mind that, but the brake lever is SUPER loose now and I think the caliper is bent. The ironic part is he criticized the workmanship of anyone/everyone who had previously worked on the bike pretty much the whole time I was in his shop. I don't care if he's "eccentric". I was willing to overlook his attitude and the fact that his shop literally smells like a litter box, but it's just not worth it.

First,…read morethey could not fix the shifting problem, and I was ok with that since it is a bike I don't do serious riding on and it just wouldn't shift into the highest gears. When I go to pick it up the handlebar bag is missing off the bike and the bars have new grip tape. I ask where the bag is and they couldn't find it. It had to be taken off when the new grip tape was installed. They say they will look for it. Long story short is when I called back to see if they found they said they looked everywhere for it and couldn't find it. Then they asked if it was in my car, really. I said to them, so it sounds like I'm out of luck and the response was yep. I'll find another shop next time for sure.

I understand marginal price increases, but that much is a little absurd. They also were pretty terrible with their communication. When they realized my bike wasn't going to be ready by the expected date and needed a week's more worth of work, they never even so much as called me. I had to call them to be told the bottom half of my bike was rusted off and unusable at the moment. Then when it eventually was ready, they didn't call me then either, and I had to call them to get the status of my bike. TLDR I had to do a lot of work because of their lack of communication, and they were wildly inaccurate with the price and weren't very transparent with me about things. Bad experience.
