From there, the City acquired adjacent properties and developed the park, which includes improving the boat launch ramps, fishing pier, the building restrooms and picnic shelters. The boat ramps are secluded inside a rock jetty basin that provides protection from waves on the Intracoastal and is located directly across from the Boynton Inlet to the Atlantic Ocean. The boat ramp area is smooth and wide with an excellent easy include for easy launching and recovery. The parking lot is large and easy to navigate with trailers. There are automated kiosks for purchasing parking and other passes. The fishing pier is amazing and provides a terrific view of the Inlet. The park also has a small playground, restrooms, picnic tables, and a grill. The boat ramp is very popular and so mainly boaters use this park. The park is open every day from dawn to dusk. Knowles Park is a good place to view the annual Boynton & Delray Beach Holiday Boat Parade held annually in mid December. Decorated boats travel in the Intracoastal Waterways throughout Boynton Beach, and Delray Beach to the C-15 canal. What drew my eye to the park and caused me to stop was a large sculpture called Knowles Knot that sits along Federal Highway. The Public Art Advisory Board allowed the public to vote on the name. Knowles Knot was created by Brooklyn based artist John Clement. The bright red sculpture is made of 8 inch steel pipe. Looping spirals stand 44 feet tall, 12 feet wide, and 20 feet long. The sculpture was installed in the park in March of 2008.

I was very happy to see very few instances of litter and pollution inside the park. It was very clean. Everyone here on this particular day was very courteous, and it wasn't crowded on a holiday. Like birding? This spot is for you. The avian influence is strong in this park. The trees are filled with nests of cheerful, impatient, and angry birds. The glades have little chicks hopping around, looking for food, or taking bath. Mother ducks leading their flock, and Great Blue Herons majestically creeping around. There are plenty of iguanas climbing around looking for easy snacks in the branches, and you'll see some really big ones just wandering the open pathways too. And when you're lucky, there's a gator or two soaking about. I'd get there early, because it can get hot later in the day, and parking can be a limiting factor.

The canal runs east to west and allows boaters to connect to the north and south running E-4 canal. From the C-16 canal you can also reach Lake Osborne to the north and Lake Ida to the south. The canal is managed by the South Florida Water Management District who is responsible for dredging it. The park has four trailer spots and a boat ramp to allow water craft access to the water. There is also a small pier for fisherman. In addition to an entrance to the canal, the park also has a basketball court, BBQ grills, benches, drinking fountain, open play area, pavilion, picnic tables, playground, restroom, tennis courts, and sand volleyball court. During my visit the picnic tables and bathroom were occupied by homeless people. Other than that the primary residents of the park were iguanas. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. The lighted sports facilities are open until 10:00 p.m.

During the COVID lockdown, walking the trails became my favorite pastime. Especially as a pregnant woman looking for peace and fresh air, lol. Years later, those same trails are still a favorite activity for my son and me. More recently, I've taken up disc golf and was excited to find out the group I joined regularly plays at the Okeeheelee course. It's been such a fun and engaging experience! Just yesterday, I attended a picnic at one of the park's pavilions, and it was wonderful. The swings and playground next to the pavilion made it perfect for a family-friendly event. The space provided plenty of seating and shade, so everyone could enjoy themselves without being overwhelmed by the heat. There's still so much of this park I haven't explored yet, and I genuinely look forward to continuing to visit for years to come.

Jewell Cove Natural Area is located across the street from the Lake Worth Municipal Park. It is…read morejust South of the Lake Ave. Bridge along Ocean Ave. on the east side of the Lake Worth Lagoon. This natural area is a maritime hammock which is a natural band of forest that grows on the stabilized back dunes of barrier islands. This natural area is 11.4 acres with 1,200 feet of shoreline on the Lake Worth Lagoon. In February 1967 this land was leased for 99 years to the Milton Steinhardt family. In 2012, Judge Raphael Steinhardt, grandson of Milton Steinhardt relinquished the lease so that the land could be donated to the City of Lake Worth to be enjoyed by the public. This parcel has now been turned into a nature preserve, nine acres of which are submerged so that mangroves and sea grasses can grow. A maritime hammock community makes up another 2 and 1/2 acres. In 2015 and 2016 volunteers removed exotic plants. Fifteen truckloads were removed along with concrete material that had been dumped to prevent erosion. Three thousands tons of limestone were then installed to create a breakwater that prevents erosion and creates a habitat for oysters which filter the water. Clean sand was added and sea grass and mangroves were planted. The mangroves also filter out pollutants and acts as a marine life nursery. The marsh grass breaks up wave energy and provides a wildlife habitat. The Jewell Cove Natural Area serves as a refuge to the animals of the Lake Worth lagoon. This includes osprey, tricolored heron. snowy egret, little blue heron, and white ibis. Plants found here include coralbean, cabbage palm, sea grape, strangler fig, sand cordgrass, green buttonwood, and mangroves. There is a hiking trail through the preserve and you can launch a kayak on the Lake Worth Lagoon but the main benefit of this preserve is to improve the health of the Lake Worth Lagoon ecosystem. In 2019, the commission voted to put on the ballot a 99-year lease on Jewel Cove's 11.4 acres submerged along the Intracoastal and to keep the land on the southeast side of the bridge a natural area. This ensures that the area stays a natural living shoreline, protected by Palm Beach County. The county will not be able to build on the land and it will be maintained as a sanctuary.

I have been to Green Cay across the street many times through the years but today I was curious…read moreabout this area across the street. It turns out it is also part of the wetlands that make up Green Cay. I often see birds flying across the road between the two areas. These 100 acre Wetlands along with Wakodahatchee were created by the Southern Region Water Reclamation which allows them the ability to recycle two to three million gallons per day of the highly treated wastewater. This acts to conserve fresh water resources while providing refuge to wildlife and a place for people to exercise and enjoy nature. In this area there is a small parking lot and a paved mile long walking path with benches that takes you around a lake. It took me about 15 minutes to do the loop. It is not as scenic as Green Cay where instead of going around the water they have built boardwalks that take you over the water and up close to nature. There are also many more birds at Green Cay along with alligators, snakes, racoons, bob cats, marsh rabbits and turtle. While that wildlife is found here too, it not as abundant. Still the walk has its charms with large trees dripping in Spanish moss providing shade along the route. While I didn't see any wildlife on my walk it was still very nice. What I did see was a lot of cute doggies out with their owners. The main reason I would come here is to be able to bring my dogs which are not allowed at Green Cay. Any exercise path in a nature is a good one and I was happy to have discovered this one at long last.

A clever use of otherwise unused land for making a park here, this walking path loops around the…read morelake adjacent to the water reclamation facility. They have good signage and the walking path is one-way (counter-clockwise) to improve social distancing during these pandemic times. The path is quite well shaded. At the start, a small peninsula has a bench with a lovely view. I sat here for a bit taking a work phone call before starting my quick walk around the lake.
