I'd been here several times over the past 2 years prior to leaving this review. Something has definitely changed in the last 8 months and I cannot recommend this place as a result. The burgers were below average and the fries had no flavor. The meat on the nachos was bland and it seemed to be frozen and reheated. My son, who is not picky, refused to eat his food as something was just off about it. My husband ended up sick for several days after eating here. I wish they would go back to the brands that they used a few years ago. While I understand wanting to utilize local and seasonal items, if you don't know how to prepare them, don't use them. read more

This review is for their Sunday BRUNCH. It does not apply to their regular menu, which I actually think is pretty good (4 stars for the vegan burger bowl). I asked the waitress what she would recommend for BRUNCH. She suggested the Huevos Rancheros. The presentation was pretty pathetic (1 star). It looked like bad cafeteria food. And the hash browns were basically just clumpy cheese slop. I sent the food back because it was cold. How do you make people wait more than 45 minutes and then serve food that is not hot?? My fellow diners' food wasn't hot either, but they felt bad about sending it back. Luckily the waitress was nice about reheating the food. Once the food came out hot, it was OK. The pork was tasty. But the "cheese" was gloopy fake cheese product that looked like hollandaise sauce. And the egg was overcooked. It didn't seem like restaurant food. I was here with a group of people this past Saturday evening after the Foxfield races. I have never received worse service at a restaurant. It took at least 45 minutes for us to get our food. We were seemingly forgotten about. When our food did come it was not at the same time. The food runner had no idea who had what or even which burgers he had in his hands to distribute. The sides he brought out didn't not match what we ordered and were mediocre at best. The sweet potato fries were soggy and cold when we got them. When I confronted the manager expressing the horrible service we received he was initially helpful but did not "take care of us" to a level I felt was reasonable. I expressed that I thought it was reasonable for us to pay for the alcohol we consumed and tip our servers a full rate but we did not want to pay for the food. He wanted to give us gift cards to return despite the fact that all of us were visiting from out of town. To cap things off he insulted me before we left because I was still unhappy with what he was proposing. I have never been more upset or displeased with a restaurant experience in my entire life. Collegiate themed burger and bar joint. During the day you can find a sampling of what UVA's Corner scene has to offer from tourists, to undergrads, to faculty, and UVA staff alike. People flock here when they're looking for a burger, beer, and the ever constant game on tv. What I personally like about Boylan would be the DIY scantron menu to build your own custom burger and side. My friends and I are usually pretty happy with what we create barring the one time we thought it would be a great idea to select every possible sauce (hint: we made a grave mistake). However, despite that terribly awesome idea, we generally love the food here. Did I mention they pay homage to some very iconic college films such as Dead Poets Society and Rushmore. Yeah, how can a place go wrong with a giant painting of Schwartzman on the wall? Did I mention their patio is dog friendly? Yep. If you're bringing fido, come during slower times like before/after lunch rush and right before the dinner rush on an arbitrary week night since the outdoor area can get very busy. I went to UVA undergrad and this place used to be called Orbitz which was an uber-sketchy pool hall. We stopped by Boylan Heights for brunch/lunch on a Sunday morning and it was delightful! Downstairs was pretty loud and cramped for space but upstairs was quiet and had tons of tables. The service was slow and were the food and company not so wonderful, I'd probably be really annoyed, but the rest made up for it. I got a Boylan Mary to start and it was SO divine! The celery was the biggest piece of celery I've ever seen. Seriously, it was enormous, thank goodness I like celery... But the drink was salty and the perfect post-night out beverage. I got the Room 121 (101? I'm not sure what the number is) burger and it was the most delicious thing ever! Oh my goodness! Yum! Our whole group was really pleased, having come in with that "oh, it's just burgers" mentality. The loaded tots are good, the curly fries are amazing and the drinks have enormous celery. Fun, college themed restaurant with excellent burgers. I love creating my own burger on a scantron sheet with tons of options, and I have never had a bad combination! I have been to this place four times and each time it gets worse. The last time I went there, the waitress just stood around texting on her phone while we waited forever on her to take our order. Their drinks are overpriced and the food is, too. They are also not very accommodating to those of us who eat gluten-free. On a recent visit we had some friends from the area take my boyfriend & I here for dinner to show us their favorite burger bar. It's a cool concept with the way you can build your own burger. However, it can be a little overwhelming with all the yummy ways you could build it! Our burgers came out & looked great. Until we cut into them, my boyfriend & I realized that we were never asked how we would like it cooked & we had a couple of well done patties sitting on our plates...and we are medium/medium rare eaters. We should have specified, but it slipped our minds (overwhelming building of the burg remember ;-))I was disappointed that a few of the ingredients I had chosen were left off as well. The side choices were the best thing I had. My boyfriend ordered the sweet potato fries & our friend ordered the fried green tomatoes. Boylan uses grass fed beef (super A+) and sources all of their buns from the local bakery, Albemarle Baking Company. The burgers are huge and delicious. If you don't like one of their pre-selected combinations, you can "build your own" using a scan-tron sheet (remember scantron??) The only one I've ever had that was "meh" was their veggie burger -- only because it fell apart, was difficult to eat, and was kind of bland. The fries (both sweet potato and normal) are excellent and are sprinkled with rough cut sea salt. I would stay away from the fried pickles though -- they have a bit too much breading on them. All of the sodas are served in biodegradable plastic cups as well. The plethora of flat screened TVs also makes this a good place to hang out and watch the game. read more

Stopped in with a large group of friends at around 3 p.m. The bartender was friendly enough and extremely efficient. She told us we could order with her and then head upstairs and she would make sure our food found us. I got a beef burger with pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions, fresh jalapenos and chipotle mayo, as well as a side of sweet potato fries. The burger was fine. The meat tasted great and was well-seasoned, and the caramelized onions were delicious and plentiful. I was disappointed, though, that my burger had very little spice. All of the seeds and membranes had been removed from the fresh jalapenos, robbing them of their heat. I tasted no pepper flavor at all in the cheese, and the chipotle mayo was only barely there. The sweet potato fries were tasty enough and not at all greasy, but they were a little overcooked and a little oversalted, both of which took away from the sweet potato flavor. I found the space very pleasant in the midafternoon, although it might be much less so when crowded. There are comfy leather couches upstairs, and my friends and I enjoyed playing shuffleboard and pool. Visited here one night for what I though would be a delicious, exotic Burger. What I ended up getting was something I probably could have very easily replicated at home. The bun was frankly the highlight of the meal. I was never asked how I would have liked my Burger cooked (medium) so I was disappointed when it was anything less. The meat was less than flavorful. It seemed as though this was a situation where the expectation was that the condiments were going to satisfy my craving for flavor. I like to drink water with my dinner. I was craving a good burger in Cville and decided to try Boylan Heights. It was a busy Friday night but my friend and I were seated quickly. Our waitress was prompt and courteous. I ordered the Room 121 and my buddy had the Varsity (chili). The burgers were correctly cooked to our preferences and packed plenty of flavor. The ingredients and toppings were fresh. The only complaint I have is that the open wall to the patio made the rest of the restaurant cold. Hence, the temperature of our food cooled considerably fast. While the menu options looked exciting, the execution was beyond disappointing. Four of us ordered the fried chicken sliders and the house browns. The sliders were alright, the chicken was fairly generous and the biscuit was pretty good but they were lukewarm, there was very little taste to them, and two of us did not find any eggs in ours. The housebrowns were abysmal - they were cold, mushy, and tasteless. So disappointing considering we are all lovers of their tater tots. I love all the burgers here...literally all of them that I've ever ordered are delicious. I usually like a lot of toppings and stuff on my burgers but today I went with the All-American. It was a no-fuss cheeseburger, just a beef patty, American cheese, ketchup, and mustard. I didn't really have high expectations for it because it's a lot more plain than I usually like my burgers, but it was so delicious. The burger was cooked to perfection and the house bun was so good. For $8.50, this cannot be beat. It comes with a side so I got tater tots. There were SO many and let's face it, you can never go wrong with tots. The main reason I take a star off is because of the incredibly long wait for our food. I mean if you are really hungry, don't come here, it's way too long of a wait. We got a table immediately but it took a good bit for a server to come over with menus and then it took over 20 minutes for the food to come out after we ordered! The burgers were really nicely prepared and served. The ability to get a Burger-in-a-bowl was really cool for folks who don't want to or can't eat wheat. With think cut, if it is too well done, it becomes tough... 4 starts for atmosphere: the place is really cool, with huge windows and open patio area. A nice local spot that offers a quality burger at a reasonable price. They have a bunch of appetizing, pre-designed burgers but they also give you a build your own option. If you build your own, you fill out an awesome little scantron form and have tons of options for every single part of your burger. I went with a beef patty, wheat bun, sriracha mayo, Boylan's sauce, raw onions, mushrooms, and Virginia ham ($1 extra). It was a deliciously juicy burger and the fries balanced with it really well. Ultimately, Boylan is not just a bar but a restaurant. I've run the gamut of sandwiches here including the Meating Cancelled, the Bird is the Word and the Varsity. All three have been better than I expected, which makes me want to try more on the menu! I've gotten the veggie burger sans bun, on top of a bed of spinach with an olive tapenade, roasted red pepper and tzatziki sauce when I wanted to have a light dinner. The portion seemed enormous and the bun would have actually been unnecessary. I'm also pretty sure the veggie burger is from the No-Bull local brand, which are my all-time fav veggie burger variety out there due to its thicker consistency. (In general, most veggie patties tend to be either hockey pucks or sponges.) The Bird is the Word is another generous serving - large, tender chicken breast with creamy avo, black bean puree and a spicy sauce. Other friends recommended it while we had drinks and it was the perfect complement to my light beer. After a night on the town, I crave chili cheese fries, but that seems more like a Midwest dish because I can't seem to find this at most places in Cville. The Varsity placed my fav comfort food combo of chili and cheese on top of a big beef burger. As this was the closest thing on the menu to my all-time late-night food, I went with it. And I inhaled it in about five minutes. With all of the above, I've gotten the sweet potato fries on the side. Now these have been fairly mediocre to me. I'm more of a fan of thick wedges rather than shoe-string. And they could have used something interested like seasoning or a dipping sauce. I've decided that I like to come here for food and drink. (Although, be prepared: the price point for food is a little higher than other places on The Corner.) There's a little bit of everything depending on the mood: Upstairs has a comfy couch area for lounging, along with plenty of TVs for sports events (like the World Cup or college football Saturdays). When she came to take our order she didn't write anything down - one appetizer and we both had burgers. The appetizer never came out and the burgers were so off from what we ordered that it might as well been a completely new order. Instead of having a manager come out and talk to us we had to wait over 45 minutes for us to get anything that we had originally ordered. And let me reiterate, the server had like 2 tables - if it were a busy Friday night I would have completely understood, but really - two tables? The reason I'm giving it 3 stars and not 1 is that the decor is pretty cool and the building is an awesome location. Went here during happy hour which is until 7pm. The special is $3 for draft beers, which is not bad. They have a pretty good selection of draft beers too. The bartender at that time was really helpful in deciding which beers to try. There is seating outside should you decide to be out in the open. We opted to be inside for the AC since it was hot and humid outside. As for the food, I decided to build my own burger for $8.99 (good price). The beef burger I made had goat cheese, sautéed mushrooms, fresh jalapeños, Boylan and sriracha sauces. I got tater tots for my side. The meal itself was okay, not bad but not the best I've had. Good burger and beers in Charlottesville. First night in town for grad school so decided to have an authentic college bar/restaurant experience rather than do something overly "grown up". The cool thing is they evidently use organic beef and you can customize your combo to the nth degree. Burger was juicy and cooked medium rare-ish with a great flavor, clever "bubble sheet" ordering slip allows a large selection of cheeses, veggies, sauces, your bun, etc. The atmosphere is sports bar perfect. Plenty of screens for games... Roll up garage doors to let the air in and an attentive bar staff (ate alone at the bar).
