I swindled my way to become friends with each group, got their food which was horrificly inedible, but what do you expect from a college town sports bar. If you go here, you must have expectations. I know most people come here for burgers- and I wish we had tried some- but we opted for a Sunday brunch. Both of us had ordered the Boylan Mary (bloody mary) and they were both well done- extra spicy, how we like it! Then our dishes were Garden Benedict (very well done- I liked the salsa and chiptole sauce!). The grits that came with were rich, but not overly so. The other dish was the Eggs and Toast with the housebrowns. Simple, but very well done. And the housebrowns- I wish I had ordered them! The atomsphere of this place was great, for kids, college students and anyone else interested. This was a great place to hang out when I lived in Charlottesville! They serve grass fed organic beef which is awesome! They have already put together burgers or you can make your own. I usually made my own but I have tried the Green eggs and ham and it was awesome! Burger on an english muffin with pesto and ham and a fried egg. So good! They have sweet potato fries and regular fries. I would recommend getting some of the burger sauces on the side to dip your fries in. They have a downstairs with tables and a bar, then upstairs they have a bar, some tables, some couches and pool tables. The service can be slow if it's crowded, but I never minded because the burgers were so good and the staff was friendly. I am a fan of the Counter out here in California and when I first went to Boylan that's what it reminded me of. The Counter does it better but Boylan is a great substitute when you are in Charlottesville. read more

Our first food stop on a recent weekend trip to Charlottesville. We were super hungry and in the mood for burgers, and the local, organic beef they tout was a big selling point for us. Ambience was fine - typical bar and burger joint, nice booth by the window, noisy but not in an obnoxious or annoying way, a bit of an industrial feel with some cool murals (Rushmore!). Service was very good and the food came out fast - no complaints there. Prices are great, and we liked the option to build your own burger for less than $10. The problem was the burger itself. It was pretty much devoid of flavor. We both got the Model UN (beef, cheese, avocado, black bean salsa, lettuce, tomato and sour cream). I realize avocado and sour cream are not the most flavorful items, but if the beef itself were savory enough, then that should have shown even more without overpowering toppings. Bland and boring. Perhaps some of the other burgers there are better, but again, the beef itself did nothing for us and being that it's the same beef on all burgers, I'd be surprised if it was simply our particular sandwich that was lacking. You could certainly tell it was good quality beef, though. Curly fries were fine. Maybe we just ate there on a bad day, but since we don't live in Charlottesville, we're not likely to give it a second chance if we go back since there are so many other places to try. read more

This place is awesome! The atmosphere is fun and themed like a school. There is lockers on the wall and the build your own menu is a scantron test. Waiters are fun and it makes for an overall great experience. The only problem is the lighting is very dim inside. Other than that the selection is great! The build your own menu comes in great handy and with a fun twist to it. The food was excellent!! One of the best burgers I've had in a while. I docked a star because one fairly quiet Sunday when I was having brunch there, I ordered a cocktail that was only so-so. This is a college bar. Don't let them fool you into thinking this is one of those gourmet, have it your way, burger bars. I think that must be their gimmick. We came here because we were in town and needed to find a place to watch the NCAA basketball games. We got a seat quickly and got drinks. We ordered nachos and out came the saddest looking nachos I had ever seen. For $11 I expected something substantial but this was some chips with liquid cheese spray and sour cream clearly out of a tube. We ate a couple and the server came by to ask how they were and I said they were terrible so she went to get the manager. He offered to get us something else but we just decided to stay safe and just get burgers. They were good although I asked for honey mustard and got yellow mustard (remember that gourmet burger claim?). I finished with the Red Velvet Milkshake and told that manager that was the best thing they had there. If you're over 25, go to a real restaurant....unless you are perpetually a college student, then this is perfect for you. read more

Hearing of their great burgers, I've been wanting to try them. I got my chance today but I have mixed feelings about the whole place. Although our waitress was courteous and polite, it took her about twenty five minutes to come to our table to get our order. I ordered the model UN burger, my husband ordered the varsity while my son created his own. When our burgers arrived, my burger and my husband's were cold. They seemed like they were precooked and just reheated but not heated all the way through. We both thought the taste was good but they could have been great had they been warm enough. Oh Boylan, how I love thee. Having a great burger joint in my backyard is now a necessity thanks to Boylan. I don't know how I survived without it. For less than $10 you can make your own burger consisting of organic angus beef from Virginia farms, cheese, a sauce and three toppings. You can add premium toppings for just a little extra. Things like muenster cheese, tzatziki sauce, fried eggs, avocado, roasted red peppers and fried green tomatoes are at your disposal when creating a burger. You can also opt for a turkey burger or veggie burger if beef isn't your thing. Every burger comes with delicious curly fries which can be changed to sweet potato fries for $1. There are also burgers on the menu already created by Boylan. And if a burger isn't what your looking for, you can choose from their salads, sandwiches and appetizers. Boylan offers a Sunday brunch that looks to have expanded since I last went, so I can't comment fully on that. I docked Boylan one star for not serving a full-menu on days of home football games. I understand it gets extremely busy, but taking away the reason why people come to your restaurant - the create your own burger - isn't the greatest idea. I had a great time here with some buddies the other night. The bartender hooked me up on my drink. He didn't know how to make it (Grateful Dead - all time favorite drink), but after I described it, he hit it dead on! I wish I remembered his name cuz he was definitely a top notch bartender. Drinks were a little pricey though. The Grateful Dead ran me $11.00. The 2 floor layout is really cool. This place is close and convenient for me so I've been here a few times. The first time I came, I was impressed by the burger and thought it was gourmet indeed. I've also had the tater tots and red velvet milkshake on other occasions, and they can definitely satisfy a fatty food craving...however the last time I came here, I ordered the Model UN and it was a solid block of mediocre. It was about 5 inches tall and completely incompressible. I had to eat it in pieces, with a fork, which meant I couldn't experience all the flavors together. I used to love this place, but the burgers have changed. I swear they used to be bigger, now they are small / half the size. Did the fry portions shrink as well? It feels that way. Sigh. My sweet potato fries were soggier than usual. Now that I think about it why do I have to pay a dollar extra just to get some honey and brown sugar on my sweet potato fries if I am already paying a dollar extra for the fries themselves? Or is it two extra? I tried one of their milkshakes and it was very meh. I used to love coming here, but the price, quality, and portions are just not worth it anymore. The best burger I have tasted in Charlottesville! I build my own when I go, and top it with bleu cheese and onions. When you are craving a burger, this is the place to go. I have never eaten here at the dinner hour, but understand that this place becomes quite the party after a certain hour. If you are looking for that, then this is one of the most popular spots on the corner. However, if you are like me and prefer a more intimate bar setting, I would recommend going here for lunch, particularly when the weather is nice and they open the large windows. read more

Cheesy atmosphere. The service is terrible. When ordering burgers there's a sheet of ingredients the customer fills out. How can a server still mess the order up when we're doing it all for them? Our burgers came our at different times and two of our four burgers came out wrong. Service was so-so (long wait for a refill and another round of drinks, even when we asked the waitress), but the food was excellent. I give this restaurant two stars because the burgers truly are absolutely delicious. The service on the other hand, is lackluster at best. Dining with a large group for a friend's birthday, our server decided that texting was far more important than serving. We sat amazed as drinks remained empty for 15-20 minutes at a time.
