We stopped here on a recent trip to Berlin, and I have to say, we liked it enough that we ate their again a few days later. I had the chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and salad the first time, and I have to say it was some of the tastiest chicken I've ever had! I think they shallow fry their chicken and it comes out juicy and moist, a little bit of salt in the breading really sets it off, and it was soooo tender. The potatoes were great too! We finished up with homemade black raspberry pies ala mode, which was absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky, the berries a bit tart and sweet, and the ice cream was nice and creamy! Perfect! The bread they serve with dinner is delicious too! We were in Berlin doing some shopping and noticed the crowd waiting outside B & W on this perfect fall afternoon. We had worked up a little appetite and decided to try B & W. We asked some folks sitting outside if they served pie inside and we were told that they had the best homemade pies around. We found out no truer words were spoken there must have 18 pies and cobblers on their menu. We selected coconut cream, pumpkin and blackberry cobbler. Wow each one was delicious and packed with fresh flavor. They serve a good cup of coffee and our waitress was always around keeping our cups full. I like the feel and look of the diner. You feel like you are stepping back in time when people cared about you through their food, their service and just a very welcoming atmosphere. We were here for breakfast on a family trip, everyone enjoyed their eggs, I went with the breakfast wrap special, but should have had an omelette instead. The wrap fell apart and was nothing special. They started switching over to lunch while we were there and there was a meatloaf special, which looked good and they have a variety of homemade desserts, but we were too stuffed from our meal for dessert. read more

We were walking through town and happened upon this place so we got in line. By the time we were seated I had read all the great reviews for Boyd & Wurthmann's. It didn't disappoint us! Next to the ketchup and mustard were two odd looking squeeze bottles so I asked the waitress what they were. She said they were home made peanut butter and apple butter and that she would be bringing us some bread shortly. So the bread was amazing and so soft I couldn't believe it. The peanut butter and apple butter were so delicious we bought some jars to go for $4.99. I got the flounder dinner and it came with three pieces of fish and choice of two sides although it was listed on the specials board with mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw, you could actually pick whatever two sides you wanted. My friend had a 1/2 order of a hot roast beef with gravy sandwich. It came with mashed potatoes also. We both enjoyed our meals and it was so much food, we were full for hours!!! read more

This place comes recommend by many local businesses and people as "the place the locals go to" and it sure seemed that way when we went. Menu is lengthy and very affordable, Fried Flounder dinner with Mashed Potatoes and Cole Slaw was delicious and only $14.99! We tried the onion petals and some chili as our starters. The bread was home made, delicious and warm... so much better than I thought it would be! And the Pies... oh my! I will actually go by there again tomorrow, just for 2 more pieces of pie! We tried their "Bag of Apples Pie" and one of the seasonal specials "Vanilla Crumble Pie" and we both thought this was probably the best piece of pie we've EVER had! Very disappointed. After reading reviews and seeing long lines waiting we had high expectations. We were disappointed. We got there early before 11 and waited 20 minutes. I ordered a vegetable plate. They give you a large serving of pie ... none went to waste :) We were forewarned by a local to order your pie at the same time or the flavor you want may be sold out. Everything is made fresh .. the complimentary bread they bring is sooo good. Hot fresh bread yummm. I got one of the soups... the chicken noodle. I hate egg noodles .. Fresh noodles are so much better. Flavor of the soup ... well my mouth is watering as i write this. I will just leave it at that. The girl that seated us was very sweet and polite. Our waitress ... seemed rushed and was very abrupt. When we needed a minute to look at the menu she seemed very aggravated & just barked something as she turned and rushed off. This Berlin restaurant was recommended by our hotel's staff as a good place to eat during our visit. We ate there on supper our first evening in Berlin and I enjoyed their open face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. A slice of hot black raspberry pie with ice cream made it a perfect meal. Rather than eating a continental breakfast at our hotel before heading back home on our last morning, we returned to Boyd & Wurthmann for breakfast. It was fairly crowded, which is always a good sign. Our waitress was very personable and charming. She wouldn't recommend the ham because she didn't know what I liked but that simply enticed me to give it a try. Both my wife and I enjoyed the ham and scrambled eggs very much. It was the perfect end to our annual anniversary trip to Amish country. The attractive blonde waitress made me wish that I could dine there more often. read more

I was visiting Ohio from Florida and a local who lives about an hour from Amish country took us to Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant. He had never been but someone recommended it to him. Short recommend - Roast beef sandwich on rye or (or any bread of your choosing) with mashed potatoes and gravy is a must!! I do NOT demand musts of others often but please please try! This sandwich was food nirvana with each bite with diminishing returns. I wish I would have had room for pie! We did ask if we could purchase the delicious gravy to go. The sweet girl checked for us and sure enough the liquid gold tasting gravy could be purchased and for the bargain price of $2.99 for a quart!! If you are in town, I recommend this restaurant though I did not try other Amish restaurants in the area this one was fabulous. read more

Atmosphere - let's get something straight right up front. This is not a traditional Amish restaurant. There are a number of Amish type entrees on the menu, but this is a comfort food restaurant similar to a Cracker Barrel. Since this virtually is the only full menu restaurant located in downtown Berlin, the seniors, in town on a bus tour, all dine here. The wait for a table runs 20-30 minutes from about 11 am - 1 pm, even on a weekday in September! The restaurant is narrow and deep and holds a surprising amount of people. The tables are jammed in and the restaurant is very noisy. Service - fairly attentive, but they are so busy there is no warm family restaurant feel. Food - Ok, if you want to bill your restaurant as being Amish, you have to include turkey and ham on the menu! Neither can be found in any form. I ordered a cup of soup and a hot roast beef sandwich. It took a long time for my sandwich and the soup was never delivered. The sandwich tasted fine, but there was very little roast beef. The server was very apologetic about the soup and she treated my to a slice of pie. The pie was good, but nothing outstanding. Overall - too many negatives to recommend eating here. Besides, there are a handful of very nice, authentic Amish restaurants within a 2-10 mile drive a downtown Berlin. Do yourself a favor and try one of them. read more

From the reviews, we expected something very different. The best thing ordered was probably the fish dinner, and the bread is nice, but all else tasted very very plain. The tossed salads have crispy pieces of bacon but then just lettuce and cheddar cheese? And the sweet/sour dressing tastes mostly like corn syrup. The noodles, (side dish choice with the dinners), were very mushy and tasteless. Pie and cake was available a la Mode but we were surprised that the ice cream was soft serve? Something about the "home cooking" atmosphere made us think it would be a local, churned ice cream. Down home goodness! The crowded restaurant speaks for itself. I visited on a Saturday morning in April at around 9:30 am and it was crowded. Come early if you want a good seat. I ordered two eggs, wheat toast, and sausage links. The eggs weren't much different than anywhere else. The bread was thick and perfect for soaking up the egg yoke. The sausage links were the best part :D They were full of flavor and delicious juices. My mom ordered their buttermilk pancakes that were sweet, golden, and melt in your mouth good. The coffee was burnt. The restaurant gave me the down home country dinner feel. I loved it!!! We sat in a wooden booth that was pretty small, but I was okay because I'm a pretty skinny guy. I could relax in the booth and soak up the environment and small community feel I was getting. They had tons of servers and all of them seemed to attend well to their guests needs. I didn't have to ask for my coffee to be refilled, which is sort of a way I test servers on their attention to guests. I love this place and would visit often if I lived closer. read more

Took a day-trip down to Amish Country over the holidays and returned to a place we had been before and knew the food was going to be good. Boyd & Wurthmann is a great spot for Amish comfort food served with a smile and cooked from scratch every time. We sampled several dishes at our table...broasted chicken, hot roast beef sandwich with gravy and several pies for dessert. The chicken was juicy and tender, served with mashed potatoes and white gravy along with corn. The dish was also accompanied by warm slices of thick cut bread...which you could "enhance" with either an apple-butter spread or a peanut-butter type spread...both delicious. The open-faced roast beef sandwich was huge and very filling. Served over bread and topped with mashed potatoes and loads of brown gravy, it really hit the spot on a cold day. Being my birthday, it was hard to resist a slice of pie to cap off the meal. My S.I.L. got the apple pie (served warm, which she loved) and I had the chocolate pie. My pie was served on a chilled plate made with a homemade flaky crust and chocolate shavings on the whipped cream. Yum yum!!! Great meal, very reasonable prices and a fun atmosphere. Having been to this neck of the woods numerous times, we finally decided to suck it up, and stand in line, as the food must be good if everyone waits. At 11:30 am on a Thursday, we had a 25 minute wait. The restaurant is larger than I expected as it is a deep building. Lots of booths and tables, one on top of another. There is even a 2 top right inside the door which is an awful table. I was so disappointed that they didn't have turkey on the menu. My favorite food at Amish restaurants is a hot turkey or hot chicken sandwich with mashed potatoes. They only had roast beef so that's what my husband got, along with a cup of soup. I didn't know what to order as I really wanted the turkey. I got a patty melt with onion rings, which I shouldn't have. The patty melt was so small, but smothered in onions, overkill. Flavor wasn't great so it was a disappointment. My husbands roast beef sandwich also lacked roast beef. It was pitiful how little was on the sandwich. He is a slow eater, but he finished way before I did because there was hardly any food. The server forgot to bring his soup, and apologized when she brought his meal. She felt so bad she insisted on bringing him a piece of pie, which was the best part of the meal. Too many other places in this area to eat, that we will not return. My husband & I have been wanting to try this place but the line was always out the door - a good sign. We went for supper about 45 mins before closing & got right in. We ordered their pork chop special for $9.99 & split it...2 pork chops, mashed potatoes & green beans. They also bring fresh baked bread to your table hot out of the oven - yum! The pork chops melted in my mouth - the best I ever tasted. The green beans were fresh, not canned, and the mashed potatoes were from scratch - so good & what a meal for $9.99! Our server asked us if we wanted dessert but we were too full. What a shame because their desserts looked scrumptious. Note that they don't take cards for payment - only cash or checks. It has been almost 5 years since I was in Holmes County and decided to return to see the town of Berlin. Gone is the cramped street parallel parking. Instead Boyd and Wurthmann now has their own lot behind the restaurant. As a matter of fact most of the businesses on Main St now have parking behind the store fronts which makes it quite easier. You still have to walk to the front entrance to go inside. My girlfriend and I arrived close to 11. We had just missed breakfast but we were looking forward to lunch. I noticed that they are now selling Tee shirts and red full size aprons near the register. The place is seat yourself and your menu is on your paper place-mat along with advertising around the side with all the local businesses. The place is exactly as I remembered it. Nice country feel about it. Cash only accepted. My girlfriend looked at me bewildered as to what to order so I asked the waitress for my favorites. Chicken noodle soup and and chicken salad sandwich. Their chicken noodle soup is homemade and comes with specialty crackers and a long rectangular log of Swiss cheese to cut into it. That's my favorite part about the soup and believe me I enjoyed it so much better. Most of the sandwiches come on regular buns but the chicken salad sandwich gives you a choice of either a regular bun or homemade white, wheat, or rye bread. I went with the homemade wheat bread. it was so thick and very fresh! My chicken salad was a little messy but worth every bite. My girlfriend went with my choices and believe me she was extremely pleased with them. Dessert was tempting but we decided to pass on it. I have had those desserts before and the literally are to die for! The home made pies listed on the chalkboard come from a bakery down the street called Der Bake oven bakery. I would assume the bread comes from there too. Needless to say our meals came to under $10.00 each with tax. Now that's a bargain! Love coffee? Only $.75 with unlimited refills. They list their daily specials on another chalkboard along with their daily dessert offerings. Pumpkin pie is just beginning to come back but my favorite grape pie is currently being served. Haven't had that in a long time but I really love it. Service is spectacular. Food made to order and down right good. They do serve huge portions if you are ordering a meal so come hungry. This place is basically a local establishment and has been known to fill up quickly with lines running outside the door to get seated. When we left there was literally no parking available in the lot behind us. Oh man! What a breakfast spot. Everything homemade or home-hatched...thick bacon, big pancakes. Normally I'd have a lot of text here but it's basically a farm to table type breakfast spot. Some English and some Amish workers and amazing breakfast food. While in line a older lady and her daughter were behind us and we decided to give them our table when it was our turn. We told them they could have our table and they asked us to join them. Jo & Kit were two of the sweetest people we ever met. Great way to meet new people! I ordered noodles over mashed potatoes with a side of peanut butter pie. Soooooooo good!
