Over the years, it's such a treat for me to come to the Boxing Donkey for lunch. I used to come here late at night on the weekends back when I went bar hopping. After a friend introduced me to their menu, I started occasionally getting a craving for their corned beef tacos. You have to add bacon and jalapeños, though! Today, during my tattoo session, we took a lunch break and I came over to the Boxing Donkey. I've been wanting to try their version of fish & chips ever since my daughter ordered them years ago. Plus, I needed something not quite as filling as my beloved corned beef tacos. So, I ordered the fish & chips and their Donkey Pretzel Balls with homemade mustard aioli. While I waited, I went with a hazy beer that I can't remember the name of because it wasn't my usual go-to. The Donkey Pretzel Balls arrived first. I was looking forward to dipping those soft pretzel balls into their mustard aioli... but unfortunately, I wasn't a fan. There was something about the pretzels themselves that tasted a little burnt to me. Kendall, the bartender, offered to remake them. She mentioned that's just how they taste, but offered to bake them a little less to see if that would tone it down. Unfortunately, I still picked up that same flavor. The fish & chips, on the other hand, were fantastic! Crispy batter, juicy cod... and the batter was seasoned perfectly. I loved the sprinkle of sea salt and dill on top of the fish, and it came loaded with tons of their hand-cut Donkey fries. At that point, I decided to leave the pretzel balls alone and focus on my fish & chips. Over the years, I've tried a few things from their menu, and I highly recommend the fish & chips and, of course, the corned beef tacos. I personally wouldn't order the Donkey Pretzel Balls again, although that homemade mustard aioli was delicious. They just had a flavor that wasn't for me. read more

Wanted to love this place, but was disappointed. Bartender Joe was not trying to be fun or accommodating, and seemed annoyed that there were customers in his bar. Multiple groups of 2 and 3 came in, and he was dismissive of them all, and their questions about the menu and beer list with a short retort of "it's on the wall behind you!" This has the bones of being a really great hang, but on my visit it felt like they don't care. read more

Good service. Food was tasty with great proportions. It's been awhile...talking a few years since we've been in. Last visit the food quality (especially corned beef) wasn't very good. Well, today the authentic look, texture and flavor of the corned beef was spot on and back! Missing the corned beef plate but they have some creative options to enjoy(e) the taste and it was a really nice lunch! Sandwich was hot when delivered-even fogged up my glasses! Bread was nicely grilled and the cheese melty. Really great sando and very filling! Great to know it's back to more of the quality and taste we fell in love with. We've had a couple of our Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association meetings here. First time we rolled in 20 deep without notice and Joe and Kendl were more than accommodating! Their staff got food out as quickly as they could. The food was phenomenal and the atmosphere amazing. I have been coming here semi regularly since I moved to Roseville in 2019. They have some typical bar food and some original choices and food is above average bar food and one reasons I keep coming back. Food is ordered at bar and brought to with friendly service. They have a bar area, table area, lounge area and patio area that is well shaded. I have the Rueben sandwiches often and occasionally Irish egg rolls and Rasputin on draft often when I visit. read more

The box and donkey has amazing food and drinks live concerts. Great service, good vibes. They're Fish and Chips and their clam chowder are amazing, not to mention other things on their menu that these are a must try item like the Brussels sprout salad.. This place is great for party's and gatherings or just drinks with friends Be aware this establishment does not do DoorDash. 2.5 stars Interesting place but not like any other Irish pubs we've been to. The decorations and lights were neat and the environment was comfortable and chill but it wasn't a fun place if that makes sense. We went for dinner on a Friday night - maybe the fun happens later? We ordered fish and chips and clam chowder as well as onion rings to share between the two of us. It was all only ok. The fish wasn't flavorful at all. Thankfully the tarter sauce was delicious - probably the best I've ever had. The chowder was too spicy for me (I sadly don't enjoy pepper spicy but it was also weird in a clam chowder). The fries seemed like they were going to be something special but they arrived lukewarm and were meh. We paid extra for the garlic parmesan version - we found pieces of parm on the bottom of the plate - like they were just set there and fries set on top - and they added absolutely none of the good flavor normally found in garlic Parmesan fries. The onion rings were decent but over cooked, a few pieces burnt. Randy enjoyed his beer. We ordered at the counter and the food was delivered shortly after. It wasn't anything special so we won't be back. read more

I've had this on my list of places to try for a while now but never made it out until today. The wife and I couldn't think of what to eat and we're watching The Best Food Review Show on that bastard Sonny was doing a fish and chips special. That made me remember about this place's Fish and Chips as it has been suggested multiple times on local community forums. I was expecting a complete shit show coming in on a Friday night at 6:30, but it was mostly empty. We sat at the bar and we're promptly served. Service in general was pretty quick but upon ordering the fish and chips we were warned of a 45 minute wait as the fryer was backed up.... Considering the bar was more than half empty that's a bit concerning as most everything on the menu is fried or has a fried component....I couldn't even imagine if the place was packed. Either way though, I don't think we waited the full 45 minutes before the food came out and I have to say, it's easily the best fish and chips I've had in a VERY long time. The fish was nice and crunchy, thick, flaky, and moist. I don't know if the tartar sauce is house made but that shit was amazing. The fries were also very good. Not your normal fry....fresh cut, not frozen, well seasoned, but not shitty like In-N-Out fries. My only small gripe is it is a bit pricey by a few bucks on most of the food items, but all in all a pleasant experience. read more

If you haven't been here for St. Pattys Day it's a must ! Door opens early great bands ! Great vibes and amazing food due to the city and noise ordinance they have to shut the fun down early 8:45pm/9pm not the owners or employees fault bummer but always a blast. People complain about a cover but they don't understand the business side of things when you have to flip the bill for multiple bands to entertain your guests and stage and rental equipment pay staff extra staff extra security etc. A great small business in our town that continues to thrive due to the community support on days and events like this and of course awesome staff who is very welcoming and friendly. read more

I used to enjoy this place for its food and atmosphere, but with the newer partner, I can't say that I'm impressed. We held a 50th surprise birthday party here and Joe could not answer simple questions such as "what is on the catering trays?" "Whatever's available" should not be an answer. Friendly enough service in this classic Irish pub. Solid beer selection, as expected. Fish & Chips, while not the best I've ever had, is certainly top-tier in the area. Fish is fresh and clean tasting and cooked correctly so as not to be too greasy or soggy. I would prefer a bit more salt and the potion was quite small. The fries are the real standout. Fresh cut shoestring fries that are seasoned to perfection. I would go back for those alone. The big negative was the tiny, sad house salad priced at $9. Definitely not worth it.
