I've been coming to Boxcar Cantina for years, and it's still a favorite. The food is consistently great, and the margaritas are hands-down some of the best around--especially the mango. Dangerous in the best way. Pro tip: go early if you can. The only real downside is the noise level once it gets busy. There are a lot of kids, and it can get pretty loud--definitely not ideal if you're trying to have an actual conversation. If you want to enjoy your margarita in peace, stick to the bar area. Better vibes, better energy, and you can actually hear the person next to you. Still worth it. Just choose your timing (and seating) wisely. read more

Great place for kids! We went there and it was packed with kids during the day! The service was smooth. They also had a bar area for non kid guests which was great!! The place is decorated cute. They checked on us always to make sure we needed anything. The ambiance turned into a more adult spot after 6:30pm. The ambiance was fun and very lively! Fun vibe! As for the food I got steak tacos, chicken, pork and beef. All were really good but really greasy that left oil on your hands when eating. But was really good. Not what I was expecting for sure but I didn't read much other than it was Mexican food before driving off the exit because everyone was hungry--so I'll take the hit that it wasn't your standard Mexican restaurant. With that being said, I feel like our meat must have been in a crockpot all day as it was just mush with very little flavor. Good food I went on break to get some lunch and ran across this gem. Good atmosphere wasn't busy at all. The wait was longer than expected with only a few customers in the building counting myself. However waiter was very kind. Unfortunately my wait time was about 30 minutes to receive food with only a few people. I still will go back but plan accordingly. I ordered 3 soft tacos, 2 shrimp and 1 chicken. It was delightful and satisfying. I brought it back to work to eat and all my co workers raved about how great it smelled!! read more

I am a big fan of Boxcar Cantina. I've been there a few times, and it has been remarkably consistent. The atmosphere is very classic, with nice booths. I like that the bar is in its separate room so the noise doesn't overflow into the dining room. The staff have always been kind and attentive. Sometimes, service will be a little slow when they are busy. The food is tremendous. The farm-to-table theme shines. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients in every bite. Boxcar was a regular for my family, probably after Tucson's closed (which they normally would close down the bar of). Boxcar will always be a solid choice for me. I've eaten all over the country - in big cities and small, in ritzy and hole in the wall good - this is greed. Boxcar is the place Greenwich parents take their kids to on a Saturday night - which helps explain the noise level, along with it's popularity. Clientele included children, but there was a table of silver-hairs, some 30'ers, and the bar in the kiva/fireplace room was packed. We were there to celebrate mother's 90th birthday with her great-grandchildren. The older server who's a consistent presence there admitted he's 90, too. Staff brought out a delicious brownie and ice-cream with a candle to celebrate the occasion. I'm not going to quibble about the cooking or the noise level because.....it is what it is, and we're grateful it's there. Who cares how the food was (pretty good) and considering how they were slammed, neither was the service. I'm giving it 4 stars just because there exists in Greenwich place for kids to eat out with their parents/parent's friends/guardians/grandparents/great-grandparents, and everybody feels welcomed. Had lunch there with friends. Food was just ok. Portions are small, too small. I asked if they could make me their enchilada dish with tomatillo sauce instead of red sauce. He said no. I thought that was strange, because tomatillo sauce was featured on the menu with other dishes. Just switch out the sauce! Margaritas were OK, but overly expensive. Guacamole was premade and served in a very small dish. Salsa was in an even smaller dish. Very stingy with portions. Didn't like my 2 bite tacos enough to go back. Left hungry. read more

Everything about the restaurant was just fine. Our table was ready for us, our waiter was really good; very professional, helpful and attentive. Our meals were prepared nicely and presented well and tasted very good. I took away one star because the place was exceedingly loud. So much so it was difficult to hear what others at our table were saying. Also, they only served Tito's and one other vodka, both my least favorites. I have to say my experience at boxcar cantina was very good for the most part. The food is great, and it is a pretty good environment. I went with my girlfriend and her family last night, for simple Friday night dinner. The place doesn't take reservations unless for big parties, but I guess it's so popular that it would actually hurt business if they did... which I can appreciate. The food is definitely great, but a bit on the pricey side even though it's farm to table. I always like what I get here, and the ground beef burrito I had last night was pretty spot on. My only complaint is how god awful loud it was. Listen, I get it, it's one of the few family friendly restaurants in Greenwich but my lord there were a TON of kids, and it was LOUD. Babies crying, parents not controlling their children, and just kind of a shit show. Our waiter was kind of all over the place because he had so many tables, which is great and kinda crappy for him at the same time. Popped in here last week to meet a couple of friends for lunch. I haven't been to the Boxcar in 10 years so I was really looking forward to it. Good chips, salsa and guacamole. Split a a bunch of tacos among the group. The pork tacos were amazing. Some of the best I've ever had. Chorizo Con Queso was also fantastic. Great for families. Food is decent but it isn't cheap...but it's Greenwich. Since they cater to families, the food comes quickly which is always appreciated when dining with a toddler. Pro Tip - when ordering a margarita they default to the most expensive premium one; you must specifically request the the standard house margarita. read more

I came here for a quick drink after dinner and was incredibly disappointed with the margarita I was served. In terms of quality it was similar to what I'd get at a shitty dive bar but at twice the price. The main problem was the overly sugared prebatched margarita mix. Additionally the bartenders I saw measured no ingredients and barely shook their cocktails at all - it was painful to watch so many crappy drinks go out to poor diners.
