TBH, I wish the honey walnut shrimp could have been a little more saucy, but it did not take a way from the entire nourishing experience. This is the type of food that fed the Chinese to make their population grow so big. The place is a hidden gem - the front is not necessarily inviting, and it has 3 stars. read more

Came for lunch and ordered the beef chow fun and clay pot rice with Chinese sausage, mushrooms, and chicken. The beef chow fun had great depth of flavor and wasn't too oily. The clay pot rice was really big. We thought the rice was a bit soggy and the chicken was a little dry but overall fine. Service was attentive and the restaurant was clean. read more

This restaurant has been a Chinatown gem for decades. Simple food in a cozy, clean environment with very friendly and attentive service. Please support this wonderful San Francisco Chinatown local restaurant. After your meal, you can walk up approx 1.5 blocks away to Ross Alley to buy Golden Gate Fortune Cookies where you can see them make the fresh cookies if you're lucky! :0) As a child, our family often ordered the very special gourmet Fish Salad for Chinese New Year lunch among many additional orders. Despite it not even being close to Lunar New Year, it was a nostalgic delight to order this special dish several days in advance and eat it for dinner the other night. We also ordered Lotus Root Siu-Chow in advance as I don't think this is normally on the menu either. From the menu, we added on eggplant with mushrooms, seafood tofu soup and seafood clay pot. From the items we ordered, their dishes seemed to be on the very low salt and spice levels, you can add spices as you see fit. Thank you for the wonderful dinner and very friendly, attentive service. We look forward to trying more of your Clay pot items next visit. read more

This spot was really surprising. It was clean, cozy, and the food was killer. I thought the service was good. I was the only customer in there and I was confused why, because the food was affordable (Dinner for 1 was $20ish for soup, spring roll, and two entrees), and the ingredients were really fresh. I will be going back for sure. read more

Great food and excellent customer service! We really enjoyed our meal here and will definitely be coming back when we are in the city.

This is a really good restaurant, I use to come here all the time when I was working in the financial district. The lunch specials were great. My favorite is the oysters and pork claypot. It is always busy here and sometimes we eat in the upstairs dining area. It reminds me of the restaurants in Hong Kong and Manila. read more

Just great traditional Chinese food, nothing trendy, nothing tentative, nothing experimental. The dishes are expertly cooked, with real wok hei, that elusive smokiness you only get from a proper Chinese wok. I ordered the mapo tofu and it was made the old way, not the modern version overloaded with Sichuan peppercorns. It was pure satisfaction. I also ordered fried rice to test the chef's fundamentals, and it did not disappoint: perfect texture, balance, and flavour. The sautéed vegetables were excellent as well, cooked just right, brightly green, fresh, and full of flavour. This is not a place for people chasing the newest hot restaurant. It's for people who appreciate honest, skilful, and genuinely delicious food. read more

Decided to try Bow Hon after attending the awesome Night Market in Chinatown. My parents use to own the restaurant years ago, going back was a bit nostalgic. Place has made definite changes but the memories were quite vivid. Service was good, friendly wait staff. The food we ordered (only 3 dishes) was delicious! Menu selection was abundant. Nice ambiance, clean, bright. I would go back. The eggplant, chicken & salted fish clay pot was DELISH! read more

It's been a really long time since I've dined here in person, guessing thirty plus years. Before a number of neighborhood spots in the avenues opened that specializing in clay pot rice, this was my family's go-to for that. We used to come here weekends or weeknights after school in my grade school years. It was mainly traditional Cantonese cuisine with their signature menu dishes being ones made in a brown ceramic clay pot. Over the years, their reputationcontinues for those and especially their clay pot rice. Shorty before March 2020, I noticed that a familiar waitress who worked at another restaurant around the corner from workplace. Having walked by a few times in November, the building had scaffolding and the businesses were closed during that time. On the Tuesday after Christmas on a misty late morning, I walked in. I was the only customer and chose a table on the right. After a quick study of the menu, I ordered the rice noodle with beef soy sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=6oVl5-voVHF4Pzn2hbUWHw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); on other menus it would be listed as beef chow fun, dry style or, in Cantonese phonetically, gon chow ngow ho (sorry, not familiar with using the Chinese character settings). The ingredients are basic with the beef, the wide flat noodles, bean sprouts, and onions. They did this very well as the smoky wok flavor (wok hei) made this dish shine. I tend to enjoy my foods on the spicy side so I added a large dollop of red chili sauce to pair with each bite. As I alternated between bites of this plain and with chili sauce, I learned that the plain was my favorite, better to enjoy that smoky flavor. About halfway through the meal, it started raining and a young couple with a dog wanted to dine here. The waitress kindly asked whether I minded the additional fur guest and I said no. As I packed up to leave, I glanced at the dishes on their table and noticed they ordered the same noodle dish that I did. The waitress was kind and helpful in telling me to let the teabag seep before drinking and offering refills. Sadly, I learned the familiar waitress happened to be off that day. In studying the other parts of the menu, I noticed the clay pot rice is still available. I asked her and confirmed that there are still two sizes for this though the menu only lists one price. Being a workday, I knew time wouldn't allow me to have this. Will hopefully return with friends on non-work hours or order to take home next time. read more

The service was perfect. The Chinese food was super fresh and delicious. The kitchen is very clean.

I've never noticed this restaurant but my cousin had her wedding rehearsal banquet dinner here and I liked it a lot! There's a hidden banquet room upstairs which has about 5 tables upstairs. We had an 8 course meal which included: 1. Roasted chicken: Felt like this was a bit dry and needed garlic sauce or something. I didn't really like it but it also wasn't terrible. 2. Sweet and sour pork: Sauce was delicious and perfectly fried but there were a lot of piece that were straight up fat and had no actual meal. 3. Honey Glazed shrimp: Perfectly cooked and awesome sauce. Maybe I haven't had Chinese banquet style food in a while but the portion size seems a bit small for banquet style. 4. Roast Duck: The sauce was the best part of the dish. I actually poured the sauce over white rice and it was SOOOO good. The duck itself was also pretty good! I wish it had the buns and hoisin sauce though! It would have been perfect. 5. Mixed Chow Mein: Pretty good! Perfectly cooked noodles and very filling. 6. Gai Lan: Perfectly cooked and not to salty or soggy. 7. String beans: Loved the crunchy beans. Again perfectly cooked and seasoned. Beed was also good and tender! 8. Fruit desert: Such a creative way to present fruits! The grapes were also insanely sweet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, service was great and efficient! They brought out each dish very quickly all within 10-15 mins of each other. Did a great job combining plates and making room. read more

We stop in because it was the only open restaurant we saw. There weren't very many restaurants open and we were hungry. I didn't know things in China town were closed on Wednesdays. The hot and sour soup was very watery. I didn't like the taste it was too sour. The pot stickers were good but the shrimp dish was bland. It was also quite expensive for what we got. I do not recommend this place. The staff were friendly. The restaurant was small but clean. read more

We wanted to try Chinese food in Chinatown on a recent trip to San Francisco. This hole in the wall is in the heart of Chinatown. You never know what you're going to get as a tourist. We went based on pictures on the window of the restaurant. It was cold and rainy, and we wanted soup. We were happy with the food we ordered. We ordered the Hot and Sour Soup for $7.50, Sesame Chicken for $9.95, and splurged on Peking Duck for $49.95. It was the standard Americanized Chinese food. The hot and sour soup was thick and rich and served nice and hot. The sesame chicken was all white meat with a gooey sauce. And the Peking duck was nice and crispy and served with green onions and a hoisin sauce. You make little bao sandwiches with the meat, sauce and onions. We ordered rice on the side. Everything was enjoyable. It was a good meal. I took off a star for ambiance. It was a little dingy and dated. The service was standard. read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant in the whole city. If you don't know this restaurant you go there for Americanized tourist food. But if you know, you go there for one thing and one thing only--clay pot rice. My favorite is the one with sausages and smoked ham. And I'll tell you a secret: after you finish the rice, tell them to make a soup for you with the leftover rice stuck to the clay pot sides. I've had same dish in China and Hong Kong and nothing compares. I've had this since the current owner's mom was making it. It's still the best I've ever had. read more

Great broccoli with garlic sauce. Done perfectly! The hot sauce has a unique and delicious flavor and the dish was good with and without it. My friend and I also got the roast duck and the beef chow fun. Both of which were really tasty and again went so well with their hot sauce and were also great without it. Initially, we ordered chow mein and when it arrived, I realized the noodles were wheat and I've got a gluten problem. Without deliberating for even a moment, the waitress offered to take it back and bring rice noodles which is how we ended up with chow fun. So, in addition to the great food, the service is every bit as good. The jasmine tea was also great, in fact much better than what I've had in other places. And, one more thing... the ambiance and cleanliness of this place are first rate. I'll be back here for sure! read more

The food was beyond delicious!! Everything was clean and came out steaming hot. We ordered General Tso's chicken, seafood fried rice, pork barbecue and the spicy eggplant dish and each dish was a 10/10. Very fresh tasting and full of flavor. 1st time here, and I was already getting bad vibes because I wanted to eat somewhere else, but my party suggested we eat due to the restaurant being on Yelp and top list and having decent reviews. The ambiance was okay; I wanted the whole Chinese tea vibes to bring an entire teapot and socialize to enjoy myself in Chinatown. Instead, she gave me hot water and a teabag to open myself. The meals to be shared were beyond small for a party of 3. Here is the exciting part: I am serving myself food and chewing. I can not make this up; I bit into a piece of a stainless steel scrubber, which you use to wash pots and pans in my fried rice. I stopped eating, and the waitress came over and started discussing with the cook; they did not charge me for that item. I just waited until my guests were done paid and left. I knew I should have listened to my gut feeling of not entering. read more

Found this place while looking for a dinner place. Saw that it was busy inside and so our group stop in. The food was 4 stars and service was 2.5-3 stars. The server kept coming over to ask us if we are ready to order when we were still looking at the menu and that we didn't have a chance to review the items especially when it's in Chinese and limited pictures for all items. We had two toddlers and a middle schooler so we need a little more time to look over the menu to order and over 3/4 of the group went to the bathroom. Once we ordered our food, the clay pot entrees take 25 minutes to cook so if course the middle schooler can't wait that long so we ordered a Chinese sausage fried rice, Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce, steak with Chinese greens, a combination wonton soup. I was surprised that the Chinese broccoli dish didn't taste too salty and flavorful. The bok choy in the steak dish was over cooked not crunchy. All the entrees didn't come with rice and so a small bowl of rice is an extra $2. The fried rice was light and tasty. Kid approved. We didn't get any water offer. If you wanted water you had to ask for them. Overall, would definitely come back to try their clay pot meals when I'm back in San Francisco again. read more
