I decided to visit my local archery store, Top Shot, to take a few more steps in that direction. I was greeted by Dana, who was wonderful, and knowledgeable about helping a beginner like me get started in the intricate world of bows and equipment. She helped me decide on a good quality, beginner compound bow (Elite Ember), then she helped me get my new bow ready for practice by determining the best draw length, pull weight, and arrows for target shooting. She also referred me to a great resource for lessons and open range practice. I'm definitely recommending Top Shot for great customer service and then selection of equipment.

I have purchased two firearms from the Shorewood location, have had two friends/family members purchase guns there, and have used their range countless times. I am 100% a customer for life of this location. The staff at Shoot Point Blank in Shorewood are nothing short of incredible. Every single member of staff I have met was extremely professional, helpful, kind, and friendly. One staff member in particular, Ben, is a WONDERFUL person that has helped me many times. He is extremely down to earth and easy to talk to, and is one of the reasons I keep coming here even after moving 70+ miles away. The best part of Shoot Point Blank is their range. It is clean, well kept, and well monitored. The Range Officers allow you to enjoy your time shooting without breathing down your neck. However, in the event the RO's see you breaking range/safety rules, they will address the issue in a professional manner. This is the best range I have been to in Illinois by a long shot...much better than other nearby mega gun ranges (*hint* *hint*) Keep being awesome Shoot Point Blank!

I've been going to this range since the month they opened their doors, and I happily keep going back! This is the epitome of what a "clean range" should be. It has the best HEPA filters in the ranges and it never smells of powder. The employees are all so very nice and helpful, usually with a does of comedic relief. Shooting there is like going to a friend's home to shoot. They make all their customers feel welcomed, rather than some ranges (on Rt 30?) where everyone seems to have an attitude of being better than you and that you're inconveniencing them at their place of work. NOT HERE - YOU ARE ALWAYS MADE TO FEEL WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED AS A CUSTOMER! ALWAYS! I contacted Shannon earlier this summer via email and she responded within 24hrs. Moreover, her…read morew/in 24 hour response time has continued through the summer; whether by email, phone, or text. We set up lessons for 4 kids initially, which eventually became 5. Shannon was more than flexible and understanding of having to reschedule due to extreme heat on one scheduled lesson day, of one kid not being able to attend a lesson, or wanting to add another kid last minute. At any one lesson we had at least 3 kids and up to 5. Needless to say we have done SEVERAL lessons over the course of the summer. Each of the kids (ages almost 3 up to 9 yrs) has loved their experience with Shannon and her horses at Downtown Equestrian Center. All of the kids came to Shannon as complete novices. Their confidence and abilities have grown with each lesson. So far they have learned how to brush the horse, clean the hooves, saddle the horse (w help due to height &/or age), walk the horse out/in (again, assisted for the youngest), mount/dismount the horse, proper posture and hold, then ride the horse (walk, trot, stop, back up, turn, circle, walk over bars). The 7 & 9 year olds are now able to ride the horse without a lead assisting/guiding. This was a huge moment for them and sent their confidence/self-esteem through the roof. Shannon and her staff are also very thoughtful about their choices when pairing the kids with the horses. They take into consideration the horse's personality, age, size, & work for the day; the size and age of the kids are also factors in pairing. Even though one of the kids might have a particular preference, if that horse already rode for a lesson that day it does not go out again. That said, Shannon & her staff do their best to accommodate the kids, especially when they have bonded with a particular horse. The kids have now learned to ride 2-3 horses; learning their personality, temperament, and ride. I should also note that Shannon has helmets for the kids to use during lessons (also a must), which I appreciate since none of the kids yet own one. Of course, there are moments where Shannon will have to correct the kids; however, she never raises her voice-- she changes her tone, much like a parent needing to refocus their child's attention. Due to the number of kids and lessons, we have also had the pleasure of working with many of Shannon's staff. Each person has been kind and patient while working with the kids; moreover, they have been knowledgable and willing to teach the kids. A family member who has worked with horses & at equestrian centers for years came to the first lesson. She was pleased with the barn, lessons, horses, and overall conditions. Shannon was always respectful, even when their two "styles" differed. To address another review: Yes, it can be confusing upon your first arrival-- Are you at the right place? (There isn't much signage, especially near the entrance) Where do you go once there? (There are several buildings) Who are you looking for? After parking, all we had to do was ask for Shannon and one of her staff politely told us where we could go/wait while she went to get Shannon. (For those wondering, there is a small "office" type room in the barn (with helmets & gear) that we now go to upon arrival.) Overall, the kids adore Downtown Equestrian Center and like having "Miss Shannon" as their instructor (as well as her staff). They are very comfortable there and have greatly enjoyed their experiences beyond words. I have appreciated Shannon's communication, style of interaction & instruction w the kids (she differentiates well for the youngest to oldest), flexibility, and interaction w the adults present. Moreover, I think there is something to be said about the way an instructor treats/interacts with the student relating to how they treat/interact with the horses. Our experience has been very positive; this leads me to believe she is kind and thoughtful when it comes to caring for her horses. I know that more regularly scheduled lessons on our part will allow Shannon to create lessons that further build upon each other. We are looking forward to all that will be learned in future lessons with Shannon, her staff, and horses.

We played a different field every single round, and we stayed the full day, which was about six hours! The leader of our group was Gavin i believe and he did an outstanding job of controlling the kids and early 20 something's who can get a little excitable, to provide safe and Fairplay for everybody! He also did me a serious solid when something happened that could've ruined the day, but he was able to fix the issue Immediately! I truly appreciate that! All of the fields are unique, vast and have different qualities to them! I will say, if you're going to play airsoft, and you're gonna be there most of the day, you'll probably need to buy the extra bag of ammo. That was 100% needed for all of us playing. The rental guns are pretty decent, I wouldn't necessarily expect too much, but they definitely get the job done and they were thoroughly explained to everybody on how to use them. If you are having a malfunction or it is not shooting properly, let them know and they will get you fixed up. I certainly wouldn't call the experience cheap, but I do think it was worth it in the long run! If you go often, you definitely want a membership, and I don't really have any great tips on discounts besides book online to save yourself I think five dollars per person. Otherwise, expect to get the day pass, the equipment rental, and probably some extra ammo regardless if you're playing airsoft or paintball. Although you might be able to get away with what they provide you for paintball? All in all, it's an incredibly fun experience and I would say ages 10 and up would thoroughly enjoy it! Airsoft pellets, don't hurt too much, but you will feel them, paintballs are a little bit different and you'll definitely feel that. There seem to be double the air-soft players for what its worth. Wear long sleeves/pants and extra padding if need be! All in all, this is a great place for huge groups, birthday parties, or just going in by yourself for open play matches and enjoying your day! If you're debating it, definitely go!

The overkills were bad but getting hit more times than I could count in one burst from an LMG that was clearly against the posted rules. People weren't calling their kills and others were switching to full auto in the field. They also played with strange game rules that people didn't understand and it created lots of confusion and people yelling about the rules. When I asked about the rules they said the posted rules were out of date and the updated ones are on the way. I told them that was ridiculous. They gave me a refund and I left.

She had attended beginner camp at New Traditions last week. I did see them the camp riding nose to tail on the first day of camp when I stopped back early, but the camp person claimed that was a one time thing - and that they were going to fix it by rearranging the groups and it wouldn't happen again. I'm so gullible, I believed them.) Not knowing this nose to tail - waste of time "riding" - was their standard MO, at the end of camp, we signed up for a beginner lesson. My daughter really wanted get into horseback riding. She was so excited. When scheduling the lesson, we were told we should do the Wednesday class because there were only 3 kids signed up and there were 8 in the Monday class - and that 8 was a lot so it would be better to go on Wednesday. We were told she would get so much more attention in lessons than she had gotten in camp - and that she would progress quickly because she was a "natural." Fast forward to the lesson today. We arrived today ten minutes before class, then we learned that five more kids had signed up - there were now 8 in this class. Sounded like a lot - the number that the instructor said would be difficult to get individual attention, but okay. In the next ten minutes, however, people kept showing up with Groupons - and getting added to the class. This continued until TEN minutes AFTER the class was supposed to start. By the time "class" started, there were now FOURTEEN kids in the class. Class was late starting because everybody had to wait (with the horses noses to the walls), while more kids kept getting on horses. Then, once everybody was one, they walked each horse's nose in the tail of the horse in front of it. Every time one kid stopped, the entire group stopped. My daughter learned NOTHING and had an incredibly frustrating time. The instructor taught nothing. Plus, it is DANGEROUS. One of the parents was familiar with them doing this informed me that this happens ALOT - especially when they offer Groupons. She said that sometimes a horse acts up and a lot of kids fall off. Just a little something to add to the stress level of watching this disaster of a class. The "instructor" Anne, (and I use this term loosely, because there was NO useful instruction whatsoever) left the class after about 20 minutes because she has to go out and get payments for the people coming for the 5:30pm class. For 15 minutes of the she was out in the lobby getting people and selecting horses for the next class. Meanwhile, the packed horses/children are barely moving around the ring. Anne was also apparently teaching the 5:30 class. But, she had to come out and deal with all the unhappy parents from the 4:30pm class. So, we waited in line to talk to her. We left at 5:45pm after talking to her - and there was still another person waiting. That 5:30 class was still waiting for an instructor while all this was going on. The parent in front of me explained how unsatisfied she was, and Anne told her that she needed to do private lessons, which are $70. Of course, Anne noted, private lessons do not get the ring to themselves, other students will be in the ring. Anne said that they do not limit how many horses will be in the ring during a private lesson - she refused to indicate what number of horses would be too many. When I finally got to speak to Anne, I told her how disappointed I was - and she frankly - didn't care in the slightest. She said that classes fill up and if I don't like the class I need to invest in private lessons. She also told me that having fourteen horses in that tiny arena wasn't dangerous at all. I wish I would have believed the other reviews and not wasted my time and money.
