When people talk about "hidden gems" Archery Bow Range Chicago is exactly the kind of place they're talking about. The location is obscure, the people are pleasant, it's a great bang for your buck and the overall experience is wonderful. I can't think of much more that a "hidden gem" could want on it's business card. This is a great place to learn about archery. The staff, volunteers and other archery enthusiasts are easy going, knowledgeable and eager to teach. They have two ranges with one devoted to teaching novice archers so you don't have to feel self conscious while you fumble around trying to hit the target standing next to Katniss or Legolas doing rapid fire trick shots at 100 paces. The main range is at least 20 yards and just watching the accomplished archers hit center time and time again from that distance is truly amazing. Range time is $10 an hour if you have your own equipment. If you need to rent their bows (compound or recurve) it's only another $5. After the first hour you'll be amazed at how well you're doing. They have beginner clinics or will give you pointers as you fumble through the first few shots. It's a great hobby and lot of fun. The hours are limited and the main range is often devoted to a specific level of shooting or league so it's a good idea to check the schedule posted on their website before a visit. Although since I often don't take my own advice, they always do their best to accommodate me when I roll in at the wrong time. That's just the type of cool people they are. They really go out of their way to make sure everyone has a good experience. I just can't say enough good things about them. I'm very happy I found them.

Awesome experience! I was in the mood to do somethin on the more active side. Somethin I've never done before. Somethin that could potentially benefit me, should a zombie apocalypse ever happen. For $20, this was epic! Yes, it's kinda difficult to find. The parking lot is free, but small. It is actually a little bit cold inside (it is a warehouse) and you have to navigate to find your way to the range once you step in... But this is a super friendly, family safe, good vibes place! definitely good for a date! No one here seemed sketchy at all, workers or shooters otherwise. Eva was our instructor, and she was fantastic! She so made the day. She was patient, enthusiastic, and knowledgable. We had to wait a little to get our round of shooting started, so she hooked us up with more arrows to make the most of our shooting time. We couldn't stop raving about it the moment we left! Sure to be back for more.

Forteza Fitness is a supportive group who pushes you to do your best and work with whatever you can do. Taking any kind of class can be overwhelming especially when you have difficulties with the exercise. Everyone from the teachers to other students are so patient and work with my abilities and support each other as we go through the classes. I have struggled with classes because of trying to train my muscles to work a certain way or having the stamina, but the support at Forteza keeps pushing me and helping to make me stronger/heathier.

The space is set up mostly for the martial arts, so that it feels like a set for period movie about Queen Elizabeth. It's a very comfortable space for bookworms to come work out. The fitness classes are very fun. They tend to be small, with lots of personal, gentle attention. Trainers get to know the regulars and the regulars get to know each other, which makes each workout friendly and welcoming. And I got a great deal on personal training. The workouts themselves are usually a bit more focused on strength and flexibility over cardio/endurance. The one drawback (for those who use the space more for fitness) is that it really is more of studio than a gym. There's no showers and no treadmills. Somehow I'm far more motivated to work out here than I was at other places I tried, where I'd just end up donating my gym membership month after month. At Forteza I feel like I'm getting a personal training . . .in a class setting . . three times a week. Like it's gym class again but for fun people with nice teachers. It's a gym class that's redeemed itself. They've fixed gym class. It's glorious.

Ya could say I hit the Bullseye when I found BowDoc ; )…read more I took the Thursday night archery intro class and it was awesome. I've never touched a bow in my life but I was totally comfortable with everything as it was taught and presented. We got to shoot so much during the class and we also got to stay after class as long as we wanted until the range closed to keep shooting. I loved it. Fyi: The Intro class was only $20 & it's only $15 for open range including renting a bow. And you can stay as long as you want. The people are so friendly, welcoming, and inclusive. I love that there are so many women involved. Apparently women are badass archers! I've been back to shoot now at the open range and there seem to be no egos; there's a great supportive vibe. Everyone just has fun while focusing on honing their skill at this really addictive sport. The archery shop has a good selection, lots of bows, arrows, targets, all kinds of stuff. I asked about getting set up with a new bow and what I like is that they were very honest about the cost of getting started, they didn't try to up sell me or give me the hard sell like so many places would've have since I'm 1) obviously super eager & 2) relatively clueless about archery. The shop is set in a tricky to find place the first time, for me at least. It's set behind a storage unit place. There's a long driveway but you just go past the storages/garages, there is at least one sign (a burma shave/garage sale style sign) that says Archery with an arrow towards the shop. And the shop is easy to see on the left once you drive by the storages & other businesses. Parking is easy. Tl;dr: I feel safe and welcome at BowDoc. :o)
