My order was taped entirely shut and took awhile to open. It was a bit overkill but appreciate being Covid safe. Salmon burger arrived warm and was a decent sized and as delicious as I remember it from the restaurant (it's been over a year). The salad dressing was particularly delicious. The salmon burger patty was an actual filet and larger than I remember it to be. I was feeling adventurous one day and decided to try the Natural Cate food stall (the other stall is purely for drinks). The sign says that the chef, Chef Wong, was a head chef at a 4-star hotel in China who cooks food the healthy way. Natural Cate's food stall concept is not the usual point-and-pick from a huge selection of food system or from a menu (like in Aberdeen Mall). Instead, the food selection is limited. Chef Wong makes around 4 to 5 different traditional Chinese dishes each day, which could be curry fish balls, tomato and eggs, lion's head (Chinese meatball), curry chicken etc. You can choose 1 food item for your 'meal box', a 'meal box' which comes with rice, homemade soup and a side of simple vegetables. I picked braised pork belly for my 'meal box' and the lady behind the counter was pleasant and friendly. She spoke a bit of English and she understood my choices. Every item was carefully scooped from one of the 6 portable food warmer and placed in the 'meal box' with care, which made me think that she was an owner and really wanted me (a new customer) to like this meal. It was rather endearing. I didn't feel like eating in the empty food court of Aberdeen Square so I took out the 'meal box'. When I got home, the food was still warm so I dug right in. Boy, I was surprised how good everything was. The soup was wintermelon soup that was crisp, simple and was comparable to restaurant soups. The vegetable medley was great stirfry which included lotus root, cabbage, carrots and cucumbers. The braised pork belly had chinese mushrooms in it and was so flavourful. Definitely tastes better than the really cheaper places like Nice Cafe (which has closed down now). They dont cheap out on the bacon and give you full pieces and layers. They speak cantonese so I know everything they said. I was trying to wave to the lazy one to ask to pay and instead, the chef saw me and told her a customer needs attention. She responded "what customer? I don't see anyone who needs me." When she finally saw me, she told the other waitress "go collect the money." She started speaking loudly about anything she wanted thinking that none of the customers understood - including all the different types of ethnic food she hates, and her bladder functions. A star is taken off for this waitress. I haven't tried the chinese food but this is the old western style non-authentic chinese food that I don't really like so I wouldn't be trying it anyways. This is only in reference to Vancouver proper, and the latter type of diner is slowly becoming a rarity. I can think of only a handful of full blown Chinese Canadian diners within Vancouver proper. Northern Cafe and Grill doesn't really count any more. Their Chinese food is limited from what I recall when when I first went there. Check out who was the FTR. No more chicken chow mein. If that's not on the menu, it no longer counts. Pffffffttttt. Kyle's meets the strict definition. I got a chicken chow mein to go. Mind you it was basically food court chow mein, but I knew what I was getting, so I'm not complaining. Inside is kind of dumpy. I was expecting that. Family run and spoke Cantonese. I was expecting that. Food was exactly what I expected, and it was pretty decent. Friendly owners. The only real difficulty is parking. That's assuming you're like me, hunting down these establishments just for the sake of saying you've been there. I just stood there and stared. The menu boards inside the restaurant run the entire length of the counter. Staff are friendly, though the ordering is quite slow. As Andrew M mentioned, the layout is indeed quite inefficient. There are only 4 small tables (8 seats total) for the entire place, along a wall. The rest of it is one giant kitchen. Best to do takeout to be honest. The fish and chips were pretty decent, but quite pricy. Not great value. Fries were honestly quite mediocre. I'd stick to the cheaper items such as wraps or burgers. Wouldn't mind coming back to try some of the other stuff at some point.
