It's an uphill and sometimes steep drive on dirt, but nothing a small car can't do. The hike itself starts unmarked but easy to spot the wide gate and uphill trail. You're in the woods for about the first third, then get some great views after some switchbacks. The top is denuded from a fire over 30 years ago, the Black Tiger Fire. Many large trees and stumps can be seen. This is a fantastic view and you can see in 360 degrees. It's particularly great for mountain views, sunrise, and cool clouds. The trail is pretty short 1.5 miles and around 300ft gain, with a broad open top. It's a great trail for most any skill level!

    Colorado residents and visitors should make the time to take in this Rocky Mountain experience…read more This is a moderate hike for those in decent shape, just remember if you're not acclimated, you are hiking roughly from 7900ft to 8900ft. Sugarloaf Mountain is about a half hour outside of Boulder. It is easily seen from the plains-it's the mountain just behind the foothills that is uniformly cone shaped. Let me cut ahead to the pay-off before I fill in the details: A hike up Sugarloaf Mountain from the parking area pays off with magnificent 360 views. The Continental Divide is spread out before you in spectacular fashion. Long's Peak (one of the 14teeners) views are fabulous. To one side are steep drops down talus slopes into Four Mile Canyon. Turn around and you can see Denver and on a cool, clear day, probably Kansas. (not really but it seems that way). I have knocked around the high country quite a bit and been to the top of several peaks, and for the accessability and proximity to Denver and Boulder, Sugarloaf Mountain has some of the best panoramic views. Some of my personal highlights from Sugarloaf hikes: -Watching an eagle glide along on thermals, sometimes above me, sometimes below. -Waving at people in a glider and actually being able to hear the wings of the glider whistling through the air. -Watching the sun set below the snow-capped divide (you can see the Indian Peaks and Never Summer range from here) while sitting in adirondack style chairs made from loose slabs of stone on the western facing side of the peak. Drive west out of Boulder on Canyon (toward Nederland). About 5 miles. Turn right on Sugarloaf Rd., follow it about 4 miles to a right, watch for signs. Trailhead is just a dirt lot. Trail starts with gravel/dirt, becomes very rocky as you climb. Not very steep or challenging if you take your time. Also views of forest fire damage from recent years in surrounding foothills. Just don't do what I did with a visitor: Hiked up sugarloaf one day, biking the next day, on the third day of their visit (they were visiting from an elevation of 600ft.) we went to play racquetball in the morning. Ten minutes into racquetball my guest says "Are the lights in here flickering? Wait, I think I might pass out..." Oops. Altitude.

    We have lived in the area now for over 13 years now and have heard about this James Beard award…read morewinning restaurant for all that time and for some reason just never dropped in. Well we remedied that last night for our 34th anniversary and realized just what we have overlooked. To start with the service was simply great, attentive but not cloying like many of the Michelin rated we have visited. They all worked together like you would expect from this level of place and knew the menu and wines that were paired with the detail of a seasoned sommelier. The food was simply sublime and creative. Every aspect worked to make each dish special without that awkward "experimentive" feel that some chefs end up with when trying too hard to be original. As a rated restaurant the menu will change often so I'll not bore you with details of each course. The Shrimp Salsiccia or sausage was original and a delight as well as the Tonno bluefin tuna antipasti. The Tagliatelle with braised veal and the Wyagu ravioli dishes perfect, filled with delightful character. The same experience with our Black Cod and grilled venison Secondi dishes. And the wine pairings worked perfectly with each course so if you don't know wines just take advantage of their obvious expertise. Not being dessert lovers we could not pass on those clever and singular offerings as well. It was a fairly quiet Easter evening and the ambience was soothing and comfortable. We couldn't have been happier to spend our special day any where else! Needless to say we will be back a lot more often. When the Michelin folks finally arrived in our out of the way city they could not have chosen a better place to drop that star!

    Last evening, I took my husband to Frasca Food and Wine for a special chef's dinner, Seline--a…read morethoughtfully composed tasting where food felt less like a meal and more like an expression of art. The menu was sublime, and the wine pairings were nothing short of extraordinary. Two dishes, in particular, stood out: the short rib, deeply rich and perfectly executed, and the green garlic, artichoke, and eucalyptus "cigar," which was as imaginative as it was delicious. I could have happily dined on those alone. For me, it was a culinary escape--refined, inventive, and memorable. Unfortunately, the experience was not as enjoyable for my husband. While the menu was ambitious and beautifully curated, it leaned heavily toward seafood and white wines, neither of which suit his palate. Compounding this, we were seated at a communal table of eight. While that setting can be delightful with the right group, the close quarters and ambient noise made it difficult for him to follow conversation, given his limited hearing. As a result, he missed much of the experience that makes a dinner like this so special. In hindsight, a preview of the menu and notice of the communal seating would have allowed for a better pairing of expectations--perhaps even a different dining choice or a more adventurous companion. That said, the restaurant's hospitality was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond in their efforts to accommodate us, even offering to comp the evening--an offer I could not accept. Despite its imperfections, it was an experience worth having and one I will remember. A night where cuisine became art--though, like all art, not every piece resonates the same way with every audience..

It's like being transported to Italy…read more Even though I made a reservation and had hoped for a table, party of one, the place was packed on arrival and I got seated at the two person bar. All good. I loved having a view of the bustle of the restaurant and especially all the parties celebrating birthdays. A few employees would gather at the table while delivering dessert and sing happy birthday. A few patrons like me joined them in the serenade. Such a warm, family vibe. A lovely gentleman sat in the open bar stool next to me. Turns out he's a regular and longtime Boulder resident. He gave me some menu tips. Plus it was fun to learn about him and his business. I had the red wine on tap. Delicious and $9. Two favorite qualities in wine. I got the bolognese with linguini. It was beyond fabulous. Insert chef's kiss! I took a small container home because I knew it would make a perfect lunch the next day, and it was. The rolls are divine. Hard, crunchy exterior with softness on the interior. I had one there and brought a second home to enjoy with lunch the next day. I know how to live. I enjoyed a short chat with Mariano, the owner's son who basically grew up there. It reminded me of all my favorite places in Philadelphia where I'm originally from. I had been missing my casual Italian restaurant places but now I've found my new home. Cin Cin! We discovered this place by chance while wandering around Boulder and were lucky enough to walk in that first time. Since then, it's become our go-to spot for celebrating special occasions. The food has never disappointed, and the hospitality is always warm and welcoming. Recommended dishes: Chicken Parm Mushroom Ravioli Vegetarian Lasagna Gnocchi Spicy Aurora Sauce Pesto Cream Sauce Note: The restaurant is closed on weekends, so plan accordingly and make a reservation in advance.
