Super fun festival. What isn't to love - there is a beer tent. There is a frozen T-Shirt Contest (look for the videos on YouTube). There is a coffin race! A hearse parade! How can you you not love this festival! My only complaint is some events overlap or are too close in time to each other and too far away walking wise from each other to get to everything. It's a super fun silly festival.

I am still overwhelmed by the wonderful experience I had at this year's festival, 2010. There's so much I could say but I will strive for simplicity. A MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE A definite mind opener, it may not be for everyone...after all you're talking about mountain people 8200' up near the equinox, closing out the winter in honor of Grandpa Bredo's 20th year on ice; nestled in fierce country where on the same day the wind chill can be zero and the sun shoots out bursts of radiated warmth that fries the same brain cells your third cup of Avery beer is...where the cops make you dump your beer because they can't be drinking, and there's only about 3 or 4 of them all over. The event is widespread just enough that you could go there two, three, four years in a row and not be at every event, or at every vantage point. This year's casket race was off the hook. As for the people, you're not sure if it's alcohol, acid, or altitude that their heads are swimming in, but they're all having a great time :)

This is one of those times when you don't want to share how absolutely cool and pure fun something is by giving it 5 stars, in order to keep the crowds away. But I will say that FDGD is *not* for everyone. It is not for folks who don't tolerate standing out in the cold for hours on end well. It is not for folks who do not find humor in a group of 6 men well into their 40's wearing girl scout uniforms with fake giant butts hanging out - or 6 people in gorilla costumes - (see photo) running around carrying a coffin through a crazy obstacle course. It is not for people who do not enjoy being around a large group of very drunk happy mountain folk. It is not for people who do not enjoy the creativity of the costumed and decorated hearses in the parade..... I love this event that could really only take place in a hippy dippy mountain town like Nederland, Colorado. The coffin races, the polar plunge, and just the crazy costumes of participants and visitors alike; Its all awesome chilly fun. The beer tent is usually packed, as is every bar in town. So a touch of patience, good humor and a hip flask is helpful in navigating the crowds. Also, if its really really cold, you may be the buzzkill in the group if you cannot layer appropriately and brave the elements to watch the coffin races and especially the polar plunge. Maybe next year, I'll actually go see Grandpa in the Tuff Shed!

"It's a dead man's party...who could ask for more?!" All the cool dead guys are having one! And this guy is really cold. Bredo Morstoel, "Grandpa" has been on ice up in the mountains of Ned for 25 years strong. I've been to many a mountain town, not only of my own volition but also because of a certain "mountain woman" who is my lifelong friend. So, I'm seldom surprised by the anyway usually unique goings-on...until the "Grandpa's in the Tuff Shed" documentary goes in the VCR one night while we're eating dinner in front of the fireplace. I'm truly astonished. Then, we're singing along, (yeah, it's a song, too) "Grand-pa's in the Tuff Shed...." And he's still there! 1,600 pounds of dry ice every month. A caretaker. A team of volunteers. A Grandpa. A Tuff Shed. A "grandfather clause" to the law to the effect "you may not keep dead people, animal or body parts." A grandson and daughter's fascination with cryogenics. A grandson and daughter's deportation back to Norway. A town's fun-loving Chamber of Commerce. And that's what this festival is all about. Anytime you can say, "Hurry up man, we'll be late for the coffin races," you know a good time's coming. There's also: Frozen turkey bowling, costumed polar plunge, Grandpa's pub crawl, brain freeze contest, frozen t-shirt contest, frozen salmon toss, snowy beach volleyball and "The Blue Ball" that kicks off the weekend. Music and beer tent has some local vendors and is open during all the festivities. They were playing the documentary up in the German restaurant and it was a nice place to go to thaw out for awhile, drink, eat and relax. (The grandson is one interesting guy, so I highly recommend watching the video over just reading about this story, if you are interested in more dead guy details.) I loved learning that there was actually a second dead guy up there for awhile! (Weird connection is that he happened to be a Chicagoan. Small world! Even in dead guy world. The Chicago Trib (among others) also named this as "Top 100 Festivals Not to be Missed.") It's the first weekend in March, so get your frozen-dead-gear together and make your plans. (I have a couple other pics that aren't linking) I don't have an official "Yelp bucket list" but every year, there's one or two reviews that come to mind & this is one review that had to be written in 2014! Reality: I only docked a star: it is really, really cold - this past year, muddy. Events are scattered and overlap so you can't do things you may want to & there's no shuttle, so you have to hoof it or drive which is very slow/congested. The town, people and event, though are one of a kind. Happy New Year, Grandpa!

It's an uphill and sometimes steep drive on dirt, but nothing a small car can't do. The hike itself starts unmarked but easy to spot the wide gate and uphill trail. You're in the woods for about the first third, then get some great views after some switchbacks. The top is denuded from a fire over 30 years ago, the Black Tiger Fire. Many large trees and stumps can be seen. This is a fantastic view and you can see in 360 degrees. It's particularly great for mountain views, sunrise, and cool clouds. The trail is pretty short 1.5 miles and around 300ft gain, with a broad open top. It's a great trail for most any skill level!

Sugarloaf Mountain is about a half hour outside of Boulder. It is easily seen from the plains-it's the mountain just behind the foothills that is uniformly cone shaped. Let me cut ahead to the pay-off before I fill in the details: A hike up Sugarloaf Mountain from the parking area pays off with magnificent 360 views. The Continental Divide is spread out before you in spectacular fashion. Long's Peak (one of the 14teeners) views are fabulous. To one side are steep drops down talus slopes into Four Mile Canyon. Turn around and you can see Denver and on a cool, clear day, probably Kansas. (not really but it seems that way). I have knocked around the high country quite a bit and been to the top of several peaks, and for the accessability and proximity to Denver and Boulder, Sugarloaf Mountain has some of the best panoramic views. Some of my personal highlights from Sugarloaf hikes: -Watching an eagle glide along on thermals, sometimes above me, sometimes below. -Waving at people in a glider and actually being able to hear the wings of the glider whistling through the air. -Watching the sun set below the snow-capped divide (you can see the Indian Peaks and Never Summer range from here) while sitting in adirondack style chairs made from loose slabs of stone on the western facing side of the peak. Drive west out of Boulder on Canyon (toward Nederland). About 5 miles. Turn right on Sugarloaf Rd., follow it about 4 miles to a right, watch for signs. Trailhead is just a dirt lot. Trail starts with gravel/dirt, becomes very rocky as you climb. Not very steep or challenging if you take your time. Also views of forest fire damage from recent years in surrounding foothills. Just don't do what I did with a visitor: Hiked up sugarloaf one day, biking the next day, on the third day of their visit (they were visiting from an elevation of 600ft.) we went to play racquetball in the morning. Ten minutes into racquetball my guest says "Are the lights in here flickering? Wait, I think I might pass out..." Oops. Altitude.

Best of all, it is FREE to see! To find the Trollstigen Trail trailhead go to the southeast corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot, next to Illinois Creek Trailhead. If you are near the trains, go to the opposite end of the parking lot. Isak Heartstone 1 was co-commissioned for an exhibit for the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts in 2018, but it was dismantled in February 2019 because it was too popular and then reinstalled here . Although I didn't see it in person, only online, I think the original sculpture was better and more playful. Isak is carefully stacking rocks like he's balancing rocks. As per Dambo's website, this troll got its' name after three little girls came by and gave Isak a stone heart. Dambo has a heart-shaped stone placed in Isak's chest. The Isak Heartstone Troll at THIS location is the second one. Some people reference this one as Isak Heartstone 2. He sits at approximately 15 feet tall. Thomas Dambo is the creator of this and many other trolls. He uses reclaimed wood and other recycled materials. Isak is pretty cool to see in person! He's sitting on an incline between trees. He's got his right hand holding the tree trunk. His left hand is balancing him as he's sitting. The bottom of his left foot is resting against a rock. I love all the details... like his fingernails & toenails, and small branches for hairs. The trail is an easy walk through a forested area. This pathway is stable to walk on. The return trail is different from the one leading in. It consists of wood boards, similar to a deck and includes a 6-inch-high step. This troll was created by Thomas Dambo, a Danish sculpture artist. There are over one hundred Dambo trolls in the U.S.A. and many more around the world. Isak Heartstone is Troll numbered 043. Isak is the first Dambo Troll we've seen in person! We went to see Rita The Rock Planter eight days later! I guess we're officially Troll Hunters now! *If you live in the Los Angeles, CA area or are planning to visit, there will be a temporary exhibit of 12 Thomas Dambo's Trolls at the South Coast Botanic Garden in March 2026. Ornery, beautiful, windy and cold in the winter, and winter lasts 9 months a year. So why do people live here all year? Admittedly it takes a special kind of person to even want to live here. You have to be okay with isolation, cold, roads that don't get plowed, the constant hyperawareness of the possibility of wildfire, power that goes out, internet service that is at the mercy of the elements, the occasional marauding bear, mountain lion, raccoon, 90 mph winds for 2 weeks in a row, snow drifts that bury cars, shoveling tons of snow, literally tons, spending 3 months collecting the firewood that you spend 9 months burning, and many more exhausting, exasperating, exhilarating activities. And for what? Well, if you love winter and self-propelled winter activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, you have it made in the shade. The lifestyle encourages simplicity and humility. And then there's the 2 to 3 months of glorious, green summer during which we hold our breaths, praying not to get struck by lightning or idiots with campfires. What it all amounts to is a population of people who some might describe as recluses or misfits, but who are our community, who do fit in here, and they are strong and quarrelsome, kind and opinionated, artistically gifted and emotionally ornery . They are who they are, nothing more and nothing less. And that's why we live here.
