Davidson Mesa Scenic overlook of Boulder

Great overlook of Boulder. Easy access from freeway and nice views. Has seating and bike trail.

Hubby and I took a drive out to Denver today and a couple more cities up north but didn't have extra time to hike or visit the mountains. We came upon this scenic overlook and it just made sense to stop. The view was breathtaking. I took a beautiful panoramic!

Way back in the day when US36 was first built this little scenic overlook used to be a tollbooth station. Travelers wishing to go down into Boulder would have to pay a toll of .25 cents. Now this overlook has been incorporated into the US36 Bikeway as a rest stop and light repair station which includes an air pump. I usually do not praise CDOT for their efforts but this project goes well beyond any expectations and I have to give this place an A+ for their dedication to make Colorado a better and safer place for all of those in the cycling community.

***AN OLDER COUPLE HIT MY PUPPY HERE*** So disappointed and saddened with my experience at Davidson Mesa trailhead dog park today. We are new to the area and one of the neighbors recommended this park for off leash dog play. I researched it before hand and it seemed like a nice place. Boy was I wrong. I have a 5 month old rescued Australian Shepherd and this park says it is an off leash park and puppies over 4 months are welcome to come play. My pup is such a good boy and mostly trained. He is still a puppy though. The problem started as soon as we entered the park around 11am on October 3rd 2019. There was an old couple (probably in their 60's) sitting right at the front of the inside of the off leash dog area, in camping chairs they had brought and set up. I said good morning to them and got no reply, just glares back. I thought this was odd as Louisville seems like a welcoming place. I proceeded to let my pup off his leash and he ran around and was having a blast. The rude couple from earlier were still sitting in their chairs and holding their dog in their lap. My pup got close to them as he was curious about their dog and their dog proceeded to snarl and snap at my dog. I took this as a cue to get my dog away from theirs. However; my curious pup ran up to their chairs to investigate their dog before I could grab him. The old rude couple proceeded to scream at me to get my "horrible dog away from their princess" AND HIT MY DOG. I was shocked. My puppy was simply sitting by their chairs trying to sniff their dog, remember he is only 5 months old. Meanwhile their dog was growling and barking and trying to attack my dog. The couple proceeded to tell me that I needed to put my dog on a leash and leave because "their dog doesn't like dogs that are bigger than her" (my pup is 20lbs). I was so shocked I was speechless. I asked them why they were so upset as it is an off leash dog park and they continued to yell and me and my dog to get away and leave. Meanwhile the woman got out of her seat and continued to swat at my dog while he was sitting next to me on his leash. I was so upset I started crying. I suggested maybe they should go to a small dog specific park if their dog doesn't like larger dogs (as this park is an any size dog park). They continued to threaten me and my dog so I just left. I am so sad for my puppy that he had to experience this. I felt so unwelcome and judged by this couple and hurt my their actions and words toward my 5 month old puppy and I. I will never come back here and I recommend that you stay away from the park if you see an older couple sitting in chairs in the park. I reported this incident to a ranger who was on the premise and had witnessed the actions. He told me that I should go to the city council to report it, which I will be doing. Nobody has the right to tell me and my dog to leave an off leash dog park when my dog did nothing wrong and was obeying all the rules. Also the fact that they hit my 5 month old puppy for sniffing their dog is horrible. I also feel like people who don't like all dogs should not be going to a dog park where it claims "all dogs are welcome". Just wanted to warn people of my experience here! I hope this never happens to anyone else. I took a picture of the rules just to make sure that I was following them and I was.

But when you come in the summer it will still look the same. So modern in such an old structure. So when you visit this spring there is a lot of truck traffic and digging and detours around the building but you can see from the last picture, the green and the view of the Flatirons are undisturbed.

Since we were first time…read morevisitors, we asked for a trail recommendation at the ranger station that fit in with our plans, so something in the 2-hr range. They suggested going in a counterclockwise direction which got the elevation gain done sooner and would finish with a more gradual descent. Being a sea-level creature, I did have to catch my breath a few times on the way up. Now, at the uppermost part of the loop after a bunch of stone steps, there were some all-rock areas where hunching down with a hand or two on the rock helped with balance. Afterward we noted signs on the trail allowing horses. They must have goat like abilities for those rocky parts, I thought. If you like seeing people, there were plenty during the early afternoon hours, sometimes making passing on narrow trail sections a little tricky. We got lucky with parking, going around the large grassy area only once. On the way out, we thanked the ranger for the great recommendation, gave up our parking spot to the next lucky person and went on our way, with plenty of time for our next activity.

The trail is well-maintained and marked. The trailhead sign isn't readily apparent from the road so we had to pull over and check that it was the right one. This was one of the short hikes I was hoping to squeeze into my busy day so that I could get that amazing mountain view that I don't get to see in the city. The trail itself is not too steep, and offers beautiful views all around, no matter where you are on the trail. When you are navigating to the trail, you will be driving uphill, and lose cell signal as you approach the base. There isn't really any signal on the trail in general. Parking is all roadside parking at the curved bend of a road. There are clearly areas to park for hikers. This trail when I was hiking was populated by locals either hiking solo or in a small group. Would definitely recommend for a couple hour hike. Only took me about 2 hours.

I started with the GC trail and created a loop with Rangeview and Flagstaff. Rangeview delivered an amazing view of the Rockies. GC is on an incline so you get to look down into the creek and canyon. I inadvertently took Crown Rock trail, which I do not recommend. It has a lot of loose rocks and gets slippery. Trails were easy to follow and major intersections had clear signage. Only six parking spots! However, you can park for free with some off-road spots on Baseline Rd. I regret starting at 9:30 as trails were pretty sunny. Rangeview offered some needed shade.

Seeing the first flatiron above the fog was so pretty. The summit sports a register and a lot of chickadees begging for food. Don't feed them!
