This classic Joel Shapiro sculpture is a tribute to Jennifer Moulton, City Planning Director during the Webb administration. She envisioned the Civic Center Cultural Complex, but passed far too soon in 2003, before her ideas came to fruition.
The piece suggests a woman dancing which keeps Jennifer's spirit alive in the heart of the arts institutions she loved.
Joel Shapiro was best-known for these stick figure sculptures that embody a surprising depth of feeling as they leap, dance, fall, twist, topple, or collapse in a tangle of extremities. He executed more than 30 large-scale, public commissions in addition to many life-size sculptures.
The Denver Art Museum is fortunate to own this excellent and meaningful example of his work. read more
