Decade after decade, it is the pass we do more than most any other in Colorado. And everyone knows the summit where there used to be a ski area and it is still a backcountry trailhead. And the views are beautiful descending into Winter Park on the west side or looking at the peaks as you leave for home on the front range. But heading up out of Empire, I always cringe looking over the steep drop offs if I am not behind the wheel. And when I am behind the wheel, just thinking about what I know is there makes me grit my teeth. Sure, I'm a wimp. But in my early years in Colorado, that is the stretch where cars were occasionally pushed off the edge by snow slides, though I believe they were caught by trees before rescue. Still..... I wish there were significant guard rails all the way. And someone else needs to be driving for me to appreciate the mountain views on this side too. Yay, I'm a fan? Well, to get where I need to go, I guess I am.
