A buddy suggested it for our Sunday brunch venue, and I was down for trying somewhere new in the neighbourhood. Down the steps of Shin Hing Street, you'll find a plethora of restaurants, from Cocote to The Mixing Bowl, along with some funky galleries and shops. It's one of my favourite streets in Hong Kong to explore with its shady trees and eclectic cred. Basically, I was already in a happy mood and I walked into the most gorgeous restaurant with a cool atmosphere. If you're like me, and have a thing for all things kookie, you'll love the tiles to the hand drawn artwork on the walls to the toilet doors. I made my way upstairs, thinking my pal would already be there, he wasn't ... But the waiter was... And he spoke wiz ze French accent. *heart melt*. I adore an accent, and it just made me appreciate the restaurant even more as it offers French cuisine by French people. Hells yes. I was really after eggs today, and boy was there a selection. I opted for the poached egg with wild asparagus and Parma ham. Bon oeuf, they were spectacular. The eggs were perfectly runny, maybe even verging on scrambled yet poached (we have coined the phrase scroached) with a salty flavour from the Parma ham that hit every tastebud and sent it tingling. The asparagus was fresh and crunchy, adding another layer to the dish. Served alongside the meal is a basket of the bread baked fresh in the kitchen with a dob of salted butter that is out of this world. I mean, butter is butter right... Wait till you've tasted this butter. It was so scrumptious I even asked where it's from. Sadly the server didn't know, but I think it's a ruse to keep us going back (although I was offered some for takeaway). Finally, I have to make mention of my ice latte. It was spectacular, with a little sweetness and coffee beans as decoration, it was the perfect combination to my utterly delectable meal. Its a small place so maybe 9 - 10 people would be the biggest group they could accommodate comfortably. We had 8 people. The tables are all set up with small clusters of organic tomatoes in the center, the idea being that the guests would enjoy them with olive oil as a starter. It's relatively new in Hong Kong, having just opened this October 2018 - it has already been nominated as the Tatler's Readers' Choice award for Best New Restaurant. Nigerian born Chef Patron Raphael Duntoye has outdone himself with his extraordinary menu. We started with the Beignets de fleurs which are lightly battered (crispy on the outside, soft inside) friend zucchini flowers. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I could eat these daily. The Crevettes Tièdes à l'Huile d'Olive - warm prawns with olive oil were so tasty and seasoned just right, so we could taste the freshness of the sea with the olive oil. Carpaccio de Sériole - yellowtail carpacio had just the right amount of thinly sliced hot pepper to give it that extra emphasis. Divine. Poivrons Marinés à l'Huile d'Olive the roasted peppers were smoky flavored but not charred so we enjoyed the freshness of the peppers untarnished. Betteraves Marinées marinated beetroot tasted roasted and marinated and was bursting with flavor. Coquelet aux citrons confits baby chicken with lemon confit was aromatic and tender with a slightly crispy skin. Delicious. White truffles in pasta - what words could describe the wonder affiliated with tasting this amazing dish? The pan fried dover sole was fragrant and tasted like it was just caught within the hour - the freshness was unmatched. To top it all, we had the passion fruit, coconut and mango sorbet with their signature French toast, which tasted like the top of a creme brulee. This has now become my favorite restaurant in Hong Kong. It is that good.

Luckily for me, the L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Hong Kong is 3 Michelin stars and also affordable (relative to its reputation). I decided to come here for lunch with my wife as my first ever 3 Michelin star experience. I reserved a lunch reservation about a month in advance. The restaurant is very romantic and fancy. We were seated at a bar style counter, and we were escorted to our seats. The staff were all very attentive. Many were multi-lingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. We ended up each ordering the lowest cost lunch tasting menu with one amuse bouche, one appetizer, one soup, one entree, and a dessert. We also each got a drink. I got a mocktail with lychee and mint which was an amazing palate cleanser between courses. The amuse bouche was a cracker with uni on top. The uni was very soft like Hokkaido uni and the cracker went well with the soft texture of the uni. We had a complimentary bread basket with a variety of different breads, all of which were amazing. I loved the croissants. For my own appetizer I chose the salmon caviar. I've never had that much caviar in my life in one sitting, it was amazing. My wife got the yellowtail carpaccio which was also amazing. The soup was a mushroom style soup with foam and a single matsutake mushroom. Soup was savory, rich, and a delight to the senses. We both got the pigeon entree. I'd never had pigeon before, my wife did but said she did not like it before. She loved this pigeon though, which was cooked slightly on the rarer to medium rare side. The pigeon was super soft. It was also wrapped with foie gras which made it decadent and rich. For dessert I chose coffee and also the coffee ice cream dessert with gelato, coffee crumble, and coffee jelly. Super rich but quite tasty. The coffee also came with a variety of small sweet snacks. Joel Robuchon truly lived up to its hype, and was well worth the cost. I will definitely come back.

It is one of the best croissant I have around the world. I love dessert. I was a bit disappointed when they change the Earl Grey Cream Dome to the new square version. The cake layer distribution in the new cube version is just now as good as the dome version. There are more cream than cake/chocolate ball crunch ratio. It is still good, I just prefer the dome version. I also tried their green tea red bean roll cake and that is not my cup of tea. Speaking of tea, I also tried their latte. Not my cup of tea again. It is below average for a latte drink. I mean it is better than Starbucks (and way better than McDonalds), but not up to the average latte level for a coffee shop. I could hand whisk a latte better than theirs, and given they have the machine... I have higher expectations. BTW I have been there 3 times during my Hong Kong visit, and by the 3rd time, they have a promotion where basically the drink combo is like HKD$20 cheaper (roughly). Not a driving force for me to buy their drink. I will opt'ed for the drink downstairs instead. Service is great. I will return.

I tried to settle in with my wine to focus on the bigger picture aka the food but unfortunately it didn't make up for the experience. We ordered the Spring chicken, Beef Bourguignon along with the Seabass with creamy spinach sauce. The sea bass was the most unmemorable, a bit overcooked but the bed of grains they served it with was superb. The beef with fries was the better dish out of all, red wine and good beef will almost without fail yield a good Bourguignon. The highlight of the night was actually the roasted duck fat potatoes under the slightly dry roasted spring chicken. Total damage: 400pp I think Ima stick with Bouchon for Super Mondays or Metropolitain for my monthly French cravings. Till then I'll probably look for another place.

I knew there's a restaurant on Hollywood Road that my friends had been recommending to me. I didn't put two and two together, which was a nice surprise when I was there. Stood at the front door for 30 seconds figuring out how to open the door, we found the button 5 seconds before it was too embarrassing. Pretty neat by the way, blended well with the rest of the street. Greeted by the staff leading down the stairs, "Obey the Giant" was there staring at you making you feel very excited already. Oh and there was a mini sculpture from Koons, a skull by Hirst, a wall print of Le Fifre by Manet (which I suspected to be from Banksy), a graffiti by André, and the Princess Peach by The Invader. A few calligraphy graffiti by Tsang Tsou Choi 曾灶財 even. If you love arts, you will fall in love with this place already. You'd have noticed how the restaurant and the menu were inspired by La Compagnie Generale Francaise de Tramway, the original company resided at this very same address at 1930s. They didn't oversell it though, so it was a nice touch to have. We had a 5 course dinner menu to share and a daily special. Foie gras, slow-cooked eggs with crab cake, red snapper, etc. They were all way too good but as they keep rotating the dishes, it wouldn't be the most helpful telling you how they tasted anyway. Trust your servers' recommendations, if anything helps. (Looking back I don't even think I've ever rated any restaurant six stars just because of the food). What was worth the extra start was service here, which was top notch to say the least. Both myself and my partner noted that they had two different servers to recommend to us the food and the wine respectively, and each of the dishes was served by a different server. We kept looking at the arts around us during the dinner, and a server came by and offered to give us a short intro to each of the arts (which we eventually didn't have the time, but that's beyond the point). We also casually chatted up with the last server who served us the dessert. He asked if it's any occasion we chose to have a dinner here, and we answered, "Yeah, not a biggie but just a cheeky celebration of [something personal]." He later, as a surprise, gave us extra set of sweeties with a candle and the "Happy [something personal]!" written on the dish. We went over the moon. Must say, I was rather disappointed. The only 2 dishes that we thought were actually Michelin worthy might be the Aka uni. Cauliflower. Lobster. Royal Cristal caviar. Etc. dish and the mango. Golden pineapple. Curry. Black fermented kumquat. Coconut cream dessert. The other dishes ranged from normal good to unmemorable. Perhaps comparing it to French Laundry is crazy, but it's really hard not to compare when they're both 3 star Michelin restaurants and the price is comparable. The ambiance was on point. However, service was mixed depending on the server and honestly... I've had better service at 1 star/ 2 star Michelin restaurants. In terms of service I'll just mention what I recall (they're nice overall, but...): 1) we found a piece of glass on my sister's place mat. They attributed it to the centre piece which we find utterly laughable, but sure, whatever excuse they want 2) while we were taking photos they came into the frame a few times. French laundry was much better... invisible when not required and visible immediately when needed 3) gave us the bill while we were still eating and asked us to leave early cause they need to close up for break before dinner service. I missed the exact wording as I was in the restroom but absolutely unacceptable. Never in a million years have we ever had any Michelin star restaurant do this to us 4) there were times when the staff didn't clear the dishes and gave us the next dish. There should never be clutter on the table where it takes away from the seamless experience 5) it was a nice touch that they gave us a Mother's Day cake to pack to go but they failed to mention that it needs to be eaten immediately or refrigerated within 2.5 hrs. Yes... they had a note on the cake box in font size 12. But a normal 3 star or even 1 star Michelin would mention it verbally too 6) them telling us that their kitchen is closed so they can only give us a doggy paper bag and not a box to pack our madeleines to go. I've contemplated giving this place a 2 star review, but I also don't think their food is bad... just not sure ALL their food AND service is Michelin worthy. 2 words. Thoroughly disappointed.
